He made a great choice with the Burris. Phil

So, I’ve decided after toying with the idea for almost 6 months now to bed the action of my rifle, a Remington 700 SPS Varmint chambered in .223. The stock itself doesn’t have much contact area with the action and is very much a skeletonised affair. After much searching for the right epoxy then trying to locate steel or glass powder I stumbled upon a slow set epoxy that has steel already in it called JB Weld. It was at my local hobby store two minutes walk from my home all along. After researching this product and it’s suitability for action bedding I decided to give it a go. First

here's a pic of my first raccon shot with my .22lr Savage markII. he's been tearing up the bins leaving rubbish all over the drive for some time now and invading the roof causing $100's in repairs and pest controll bills. i'd been up several nights waiting for him till' the crack of dawn with old fish on the drive for bait and........ nothing. the other night i shone the torch over to the bins and saw some eyes shine back, the rest is history. shot with a single winchester dynapoint 40gr hp to the head at 30 yds. Yes Mr_Logic, i did use the correct size, i have both SAE and metric keys, they just weren't very good quality i suspect Phil

the x-mark pro trigger is crisp, predictable, creep free and stupidly heavy! (comes from the land of the lawsuit) also non user adjustable unless you want to strip your allen keys as i did, grub screws for adjustment are glued in place. i'm having the trigger worked on by a smith soon so shouldn't be too much trouble. the extractor is a joke and any crap caught behind it causes it to smash through the case rim rather than hop over it causing problems closing the bolt and extracting the cartridge. It likes some brands better than others, I have no problems with American Eagle FMJ’s, strangel

i use the same method, i took the small white squeaker out of a dog toy and inserted into some aluminium tube 2'' long with a 6mm internal diameter, then using brass ball chain (like the one used in bathrooms to hold onto plugs) i drilled holes in the tube near the end and inserted the chain to put round my neck. other than being able to call in foxes i can call in birds of prey and best of all rabbits! for some reason rabbits are mesmerized by the squeak and i can walk right up to about 15 yds quite normally without them moving, but when i stop squeaking they run, but stop again if i squeak!

i shoot squirrels in trees with my savage .22lr, i just make sure they are between me and the tree so if i miss, it hits the tree. no problems so far and many a tree rat taken. Phil

this might be a very stupid question, but has anyone ever used a power tool type battery? i had i makita torch once, 12v and great for lamping with a good beam. the batteries are light and if you had 2 of them you could change them over. wouldn't take much to build something quite useable. opinions? yes, i am using factory loads. i am cleaning the rifle well and it doesn't happen to any other brand of ammo. i would switch ammo but the winchesters are pretty accurate. Phil

Hi guys, i tried Winchester .223 super x ammo in my remington 700 yesterday, only thing is when the case is extracted (only extracts 50% of the time! i blame the crap rem extractor though) there is burn marks around the case neck on the outside - anybody know what this is??? or if it's bad. getting good groups with it, my first 3 shot group with them was .8'' - kneeling over a broken table, rested on my hand up to my waist in snow - whilst snowing and -12oC! so i'd like to keep using them with that kind of potential!! but what the hell are those marks?? thanks, Phil

some rifles really come to life with some for end pressure. free floating a barrel usually helps most barrels especially thicker varmint type barrels, but occasionally a bit of for end pressure on a sporter barrel can tame vibrations and tighten groups -try it, you have got nothing to lose! to start, just get a business card and unscrew the action screws so that you can slide a business card under the very front of the barrel and stock and re-tighten the screws. if there is too much clearance between barrel and stock, try 2 layers, or try 2 layers anyway and see if more pressure helps - you m

sort of, they are a breed of grey squirrel that are just black, they are common round here in southern ontario. i'm English but i live in Canada. Phil

take a look at the Hawke sport HD series of scopes. they fit in your budget and for the price i can't believe how clear they are. they stand up well to recoil and are pretty tough scopes. not much to look at, but in the price bracket you mentioned nothing in my mind comes close. made buy hawke, a known company, will help if anything goes wrong - not a seller you don't know from the far east - try sending that back! ''Therefore in many cases a faster, heavier projectile will be subject to more wind drift'' Really? i thought it was the opposite, because my 55gr 3400 fps .223 bullets drift less than my 1150 fps .22lr 40gr pellets at the same distance. can you explain, or have i totally misunderstood? Phil

philip140 replied to peter009988's topic in Reloading and Gun Maintenance
this seller's feedback is only 81%!! that's terrible! some of his negative feedback indicates they are fakes: ALL3FAULTY,NO LIFE GUARANTEE WITH THESE.FAKES2.BE WARNED,2GOOD2BE TRUE (love the use of English there) i love this sellers reply to one person who left negative feedback: 'You gave us negative feedbacks purposely for bad intention! will put complaint!' love it! so, due to his negative 'feedbacks' i'd avoid - likely fakes, but since simmons now have a factory in china, possibly not? Hey bud, i have the same rifle in .223. how do you find the trigger on yours? mine is really crisp with little creep but very heavy. i have tried to adjust it but they glue those adjustment screws in real tight! Phil

it's unlikely anyone is going to tell you on here mate since no one can tell if you really have a firearms cert. i have little knowledge on spring guns, but have tuned many PCP's. i would suspect it would involve having a longer barrel fitted for a start and a more powerful spring, the latter can be bought, but you'll have to produce your fac cert for that. best bet is to have it taken in to a gun shop and have it done properly, if you try it yourself and balls it up, it'll end up costing you more, you'll probably need a spring press to install the larger spring too! i favor the burris fullfield II, i have one on my savage .22lr in 3-9x40 and i find the ballistic plex reticle very handy without needing to adjust target turrets for different ranges and for the price the optics are superb. i personally like adjustable parallax, but that's just me. Phil
