Fac Application - What Is Considered Family?
philip140 replied to philip140's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Well, I currently live in the house next door to her parents, so if we're going to get technical, they are my neighbors, I could put that down on the form. Or am I straying down the wrong road there? Phil -
Fac Application - What Is Considered Family?
philip140 replied to philip140's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Nope, not allowed according to Cumbria police. Technically they consider my partners parents 'in-laws'. I guess I better break the news to my girlfriend that we're married according to Cumbrian firearms law. I'm sure she's gonna be thrilled! Phil -
Evening chaps, Apologies if this has been asked or talked about before or is in the wrong section, But after searching the net and this site I can't answer my specific question.. I am looking to apply for my FAC when I move to Cumbria in the next few weeks. I realize I need two referees that have known me for 2+ years and I also know amongst others, family are not allowed to be referees. But how about my partners parents? They are technically not family as I am not married (some police websites have stated in-laws being family). Using my partners parents will simply be easier for me as

Pillar And Glass Bedding Rimfires!!!
philip140 replied to irishnut's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
I relieved the stock on my Savage MKII and used fiberglass and 2 part epoxy to bed the action and the first inch of the barrel, yes it did make a difference for me, a big difference. The barrel was already floated for what it's worth. Phil -
Thanks Stu, that's some great information, I am looking into syndicates as a viable option, thank you. I think that's the main issue with UK deer hunting, it's mainly case of having money or being lucky enough to know someone who can offer you opportunities. It's a shame but that may be due in part to over 60 million people living on an island and a general anti-gun anti-hunting attitude among much of the public. Thank you again, Phil

Thanks, Extreme Hunter, pigs are something I'd be interested in too, though I hear there are only a little over a thousand right now, better wait for the numbers to come up I suppose? I remember Sussex from a kid as my grandparents lived there, beautiful countryside! I'll look into that, thank you for the advice. I'll still welcome other suggestions if anybody has some other ideas? Thanks again! Phil

Hi guys, I've recently come back to the UK after living in Canada for 6 years and I am essentially starting my life over here in England. I'm staying temporarily with my partners family until we decide where we want to live long term. Living life in Canada was my dream come true and one day I'd like to return, but immigration issues put the brakes on that for now. The hunting memories from there will stay with me forever, but I'd like to continue hunting here in the UK. So my question is this: Where is the best place to live in the UK for the hunting enthusiast? Considerations ar

please can I come and shoot you????
philip140 replied to hollie.vincent87's topic in Deer Stalking & Management
Just felt sorry for the poor lass as it seems no one is taking her seriously. Nothing to do with no sense of humour, perhaps if you said something funny, I might laugh. At least she got help elsewhere on the forum. Phil I think maybe you need help as you say Phil, maybe a personality bypass Yeah, good one! -

The woman is asking for help with her university project which no doubt will benefit our country sports. It's a shame that some of you display a distinct lack of maturity in asking for her 'stats' first. Very sad. I would have loved to help Hollie, but I live in canada now. Phil -
PILLAR BEDDING THE WEATHERBY VANGUARD
philip140 replied to philip140's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Using Kiwi shoe polish you'll be just fine, I used only one application of wax before buffing to a shine and it popped out using 2 fingers on the barrel and 2 fingers on the stock! If you have any questions let me know, the parker hale is a great rifle, I had the opportunity to buy one a few months back and now I'm kicking myself! Phil -
PILLAR BEDDING THE WEATHERBY VANGUARD
philip140 replied to philip140's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
I didn't bother to check for the simple reason that even if it was more accurate in the new stock, that accuracy wouldn't be as repeatable. Bedding with pillars is all about repeatable accuracy. I have never had a rifle without pillars or aluminium bedding block hold zero after removing the stock for cleaning or inspection. Every time you put the stock back on the amount of torque you put on the action screws varies slightly, this changes the way the barrel vibrates which means the next time you go to shoot it, it may be slightly high and slightly left or any number of variations. Accuracy may -
PILLAR BEDDING THE WEATHERBY VANGUARD .243 THE STRESS FREE METHOD So, I thought I’d share with you my method for stress free bedding the Weatherby vanguard. I bought this rifle as a dual purpose varmint/deer rifle that I could also use for informal long range target shooting (mainly for hunting practice). Prior to doing anything to the rifle I had tested its accuracy at the range with different factory ammo. It seemed to like Hornadys Superformance ammo best shooting the 95gr SST’s at just over 2’’ at 200yds. It was a windy day and the horizontal spread was where groups rea

A Chinese scope or a Chinese scope, hmmm, neither! I recommend saving up and buying something better, unless of course, it's going on a chinese airgun!

I don't have any real experience with the Prostaff, but i have the Nikon Monarch in 4-16x42 sf. the optics are very good, definately the brightest scope i have looked through so far. my only real gripe is that it doesn't have a great deal of adjustment range for shots past 400 yds with my .223 The monarch might scrape by as being called a cheaper alturnative to the high end trio, but the prostaff is definately not in the same league as to be called an alternative in any way. The only rifle that Browning makes that will compare to the savage in question is the A-bolt Target. you get a 28'' barrel, set trigger and the action is already glass bedded into the stock (i believe it's the recoil lug that's bedded). http://www.browning.com/products/catalog/firearms/detail.asp?value=001B&cat_id=035&type_id=189 Phil

It's one of my favorite rifles, though i can't speak for the synthetic stock since i haven't held one, just a wood stock x-bolt. as for the barrel rising as it heats up, this should only be a problem for rifles where you have contact between the barrel and the fore end. the x-bolt is free floated along the length of the barrel, so this isn't a problem.
