  1. We call it "bullying the fish in" it's common practice with catch and release in still water trout. Thick gauge hooks help as well, minimising mouth damage.Lots of fishermen (especially coarse fishermen) underestimate the energy that fish put into their fight and "carefully" playing such hard fighting fish such as Barbel, Trout, etc can be killing them with kindness. I've said the same thing myself to people on the bank about not messing about getting them in quick . You see them panic as a barbel puts a bend in the rod so they lower the tip and slacken the clutch and end up playing them fo
  2. One of mine does it all the time but only when it's the Mrs and not me who's there . He had some steaks off yesterday that the she had done and even though she knows what he's like he still manages to outwit her , as mad it sounds it's like he even creates distractions if he can't get straight to it like grabbing a tea towel or a shoe and running off to the next room knowing that she will go and take it off him and as soon as she does he runs back past her and grabs what he wants .
  3. Like the look of the inline trout , the inline pike look good aswell . Ive had some on the 20 cm 3d rattle trout including one that picked it up static like a deadbait in 30ft of water . I dont think my rod would take 300g although i have lobbed the occasional mag dawg and fox deviant which are around the 7-8oz mark i wouldnt like to do it all day . If you want a big lure have a look at the musky innovations pounder and 2pounder dawgs , they also do rods with massive ratings to match them . A river 20 would be nice but theres not many rivers round here that will do it
  4. Solid traces are the only way to go with the big stuff . Which abu do you use , Ive had 5501c3 and 6601c4 but prefer shimanos and okumas but ive noticed a lot of people relly rate the new abus with the drop down gears 6501c4 is the big reel, I also have a shimano for lighter work and that can cast a loooong way! I prefer the shimanos to abus , I had the silver c3 and the blue and gold c4 but they feel a bit agricultural and not the same feel as the 401 corvalus and Cardiffs I've had . If your ever in the market for a new low profile multi have a look at the okuma Helios air , I've been a pro
  5. Have a look at the the okuma Komodo or Citrix at taskers , they were selling the older models off not long back or even look for a second hand Abu or shimano . The round profile reels might feel a bit akward at first but you get used to it . They are not hard to cast if you don't try and force the cast . There's a casting brake that you can set so that when the reels in freespool the spool will stop spinning as soon as the lure hits the water , to test it all you do is hold your rod out with the lure on press the bail and let it hit the ground and adjust till it doesn't overun . Once you get u

  7. Are you going to be using a multiplier set up for the big stuff . Its not easy to use the real big stuff on fixed spool reels , it can be done but multis are best for the job . Your lucky your close to taskers i wish it was close to me , its a good shop and will do deals if your spending money , last time i went down i got an okuma helios air multiplier for a lot less than they are advertised at , aswell as a load of sg lures and pliers for a lot less than they should have been . I know what you mean about the scouse angler , his early vids looked like he had tripped up in the savage gear fac
  8. His videos are pretty good . River piker has a lot of good ul and jerk bait videos as well there's also a lad called the Scouse angler who does vids round your way . The harness is not too hard to do , if you have some of the round nose pliers to form the eyes for the hook hangers . I don't use the welding rods phill uses , I use the 340lb AFW stainless single strand wire from rok max . I also use the same in 174lb for jerkbait traces . If your going with jig heads for them , something like 7/0 - 8/0 would probably be enough . If you've not used big stuff before don't make the mistake of fish
  9. Agm do some big 10 inch pike grubs for next to nothing . You need to rig them yourself with either a jig head or like i do with an homemade harness so they can be fished in the shallowest water without snagging on weed/rocks. Theres a vid on youtube of phill blakely showing how to make the harness for real eels , its the same process for the agm ones . If you see the savage gear alien eels for sale pass on them , they are not a patch on dawgs they are too stiff of a plastic and need to be worked fast to get the tail action working properly. The freestylers can be worked as a surface lure if yo
  10. Dont know why companys do this , surely after people have clicked they are not the same and stop buying them then the manufacturing savings they made will start going the other way and they are no longer players in the lure market . Ive not got any pikies , i tend to use dawgs and eel type baits and jerkbaits if im using big stuff . The only biggish cranks ive got are the 19cm sg lowriders and lip lures . My mate has a few big pikies that hes had a few on and i think the record was took on a pikie
  11. One of the first decent pike I caught on a lure was on a big s on Kearns in accy . I stupidly gave all my original big s away years ago and the newer ones are not the same . I do have bomber shallow A and square A and rapala dt4 though , which are pretty much the same type of lures and catch plenty of pike when I do get round to using them
  12. If you have any big s type lures or the crank n shads will probably do it , you can use them as surface/wake bait lures by keeping the rod tip pointing upwards and either reeling in slowly or flicking your tip upwards . You will get a fair number of missed hits but it's good when they bow wave behind your lure or just fly out the water when you least expect it . I've seen them surface crawlers , they look good , I bet they'd do well down the edges of the canal and near cover
  13. Might aswell get your name down for them , its well worth joining for the amount of waters they have , something like 270-280 and growing . The only downside is having to go to macclesfield to get your ticket and listen to a talk for an hour or 2 . Stick some pics up and ill see if i can tell you what they are , cant promise because a lot of plastics and crankbaits are copies of each other , ill do my best though
  14. Shops like agm and lure world are dangerous , you go on for a packet of jig heads and a few minutes later end up £50 lighter .
  15. They are good catchers and well finished unlike a lot of the american lures . Ive found that a twitch and pause retrieves work well for perch with them . I got mine for a fiver each from a tackle shop that opened in accrington recently , they had a couple left last time i was in .
  16. I've just emailed the bloke from The colorsofbagleys because they could be very rare , according to the site the no1 in sinking versions are like hens teeth and mine are both sinkers . I don't think they are nothing special in use , I tried them last night and had one hit on one but a switch to a yo zuri goby brought a couple of perch straight away and the yellow kopyto took a couple of jacks and perch from the same area .
  17. Its not that hard to get in paas and dont let the waiting list put you off , it was only just over a year for me and i think walshie0988 off here was something similar . For the money its well worth joining for the amount of waters they have , from the welsh wye to the liddle in the scottish borders and most of the major rivers and tributaries in between aswell as the stillwaters. As for remembering lure names , im a bit ocd with them , ive got loads and i can tell you what they all weigh aswell . Which ones did you win in the comp , I do like his lures and the amount of colours he offers and
  18. It is tempting to shut them , but im curious to see if they are worth the money they are going for so im going to have an hour on the canal before dark. Hopefully i wont lose them or ill have to hide the razor blades
  19. Are there any lure collectors on here that can tell me what the crack is with the bagley bang o lure #1 . I picked some up at the weekend for next to nothing and i had a look online for some more last night and cant believe the prices they are going for . They ranged from $25 to $125 , obviously colour plays a part but why so expensive for a lure thats only 1.5inch long and weighs a couple of grams
  20. Quality lures and not dear either . Where was the competition , on his blog or the las forum . Ive got some of his crank n beans and had a fair few jacks off the top with them aswell as perch when ive fished them sub surface. I got a result at the prince albert show yesterday, £4 for two bagley bang o lure #1,s and three 1,5/8ths rebel minnows all bnib. They should be spot on for perch on the canal
  21. I use jig heads with them , usually in the 0.5 to 3.5 gram range . The white glitter and the chartreuse glitter ones are what I use mainly but all the colours catch . I don't bother with dropshotting because I find it a bit dull even though it does work . Some other agm lures I use are bass asassin and their own curly tail grubs and some of the 1.5inch hrt carp crankbaits in roach , crucian and perch pattern . They are only cheap but I've had a lot of perch and pike on them . Lure world is another good shop , especially for kopytos and they also do the gloog hektor crankbaits as well which ar
  22. If you like curly tail grubs have a look at the orca twister tails and orca mermaids at agm , they are the lures ive usually got on if i dont have a yellow or white kopyto on

    Army Surplus

Feltons in Preston is not bad . It's not the cheapest place but the stuff they sell is not tat like the stuff you see at a lot of army surplus shops
  24. I used to be the same , dt for all my trout fishing but earlier this year I got some new Rio lines and a snowbee thistledown and while I'm not that impressed with the rios the snowbee thistledown is brilliant. It's so thin it lands and lifts off with barely a ripple yet with one or two false casts It will cast as far as you need it to and with the silk furled leader I use it turns my drys over perfectly even using longish 2lb tippets .
  25. I used to use dt for everything but all my lines bar one are wf now . If you do get a dt you can turn it round when one end gets worn or do what some people do and cut it in half for 2 lines
