  1. keep the dog on a lead and handle youre ferret, every time the dog starts going mad for the ferret check it with the lead and give it the command "NO".do this about three or four times a day for about five to ten minuites at a time.the dog will get the message .im in the process of teaching a lurcher pup the rights and wrongs at present, hes ok until the excitement kicks in and he thinks he can play with them, fortunatley enough ive got a ferret thats really laid back and wouldnt bat an eyelid at the dog.hope all goes well for you mate
  2. im busy reading the complete lurcher now.its been that long since ive trained a dog ive almost forgotten
  3. alfie deerhound/greyhound x collie greyhound,he stands about 28 tts
  4. Wait till next season with the lamp on your dog mate, plenty walks training bonding etc. Just a bit at a time. shes too old for that game now.she is twelve and a half but still likes to be out with me .i just normally take her out ferreting with me as she marks extremely well, and she still manages to catch rabbits even at her ripe old age.we had her out with us on monday and she caught two, both bolters that managed to get rid of the nets.one was a bit of a lengthy course but she stuck with it and got it ,the other was a short run and she got that aswell ,looking forward to getting th
  5. mine.first cross collie whippet
  6. dont give in mate...myself and john-b were in the same boat.we managed to get on a couple of farms after knocking doors for weeks on end,now we have got quite a bit of land.we managed to get on another two permissions at the beginning of the week due to having a neighbouring farm.just be polite when youre knocking doors ,dont be too up front with the land owners,at the end of the day youre doing them a favour not the other way round.i hope all goes well for you and dont give up...it will finally happen for you sooner or later
  7. wanna come and show me how to use mine then??? get a three foot wide spade mate, that should do he trick
  8. you should have just went up tunstall mate and got the stragglers me and john have left behind ,only joking mate, well done on the rabbits.it was the same on our permission yesterday.we managed to get some more land in the neighbouring farms .there was rabbits everywhere,we managed to get nine with the ferrets and bolted two to my old lurcher.theres still no signs of baby rabbits on there yet so we might have a couple of weeks left before we hang up the nets.weve only got the one ferret to work as john's jill has come into season and my old lurcher done her last shift yesterday as she is now
  9. yes mate, you can work them.one of the two albinos in the picture ive put up is a top notch worker the other two have not really been tried yet.theyve done a few setts but theyre not up to scratch yet
  10. Always make me chuckle this pic, the one on the left looks like he has a big grin Almost looks like the animal version of the heath ledgers Joker from the batman. Why so serious!!! they are father and son,the one to the left of the picture is the son,and he's still smiling
  11. that particular ferret had never been handled until i got it and it was really nippy, that was the precaution i had to take.its fine now though

  15. been looking for a pup for the last few days as i had to have one of my old dogs pts ,and my other dogs are getting on in years.ive just accuired a saluki/whippet x collie grey.i had a look at both parents at the owners home.the sire of the pups is an awesome looking dog.its took all legal quarry(pre ban).the mother is an out and out rabbit dog.il get some pics of the pup on a bit later
  16. myself and john have decided to go out on monday.the last time we were out we drove past a bit of land not too far from one of our permissions and it was alive with rabbits and pheasant.we stopped the van to do a head count and there was well over twenty rabbits on a tiny bit of embankment and that was without the others that were running about.so our plan is to knock every door in that area to see if we can get on it and sort that problem out.if not were going on one of our other permissions for a change of scenery.im thinking of giving my two new jills a run out aswell as the old hob ferret.
  17. try benylin cough medicine from the chemist, that normally gets shot of it
  18. yeah ,during the breeding season mate, all ferrets differ in when they come out of season as they do when they come into season.they normally start coming out of season round abouts august time, some may be earlier and some later, the only way to tell is have a look at their genital area, once the swelling starts to subside they are coming out
  19. ive seperated all my hobs.mine were doing exactly the same.you will find it wont stop.and if you seperate them and try introducing them in a few weeks they will do the same again.its that time of year where all they are interested in is mating.youre better off leaving them seperated til the end of the season then putting them back together.i have not long since give two polecat hobs to my father in law which are brothers,he says they are starting to drag each other about, they may not like being seperated but its best in the long run,one of them will either end up injured or possibly dead ,ive
  20. i would still be questioning the ferrets ability.reading some of the lads earlier posts the ferret hasnt seen much in the way of rabbits and is probablys still in experienced.i also think he needs a dog with a good nose, this will let him know for sure if theres anything home, and wether the ferret is doing what it supposed to be doing.ive had situations like this myself.fortunatley enough for me ive got a good dog that lets me know if theres anything home.i normally take three ferrets out with me.if two of them are not doing the job and bolting rabbits out of marked setts, ive always got the old
  21. ive lived in both areas.i moved from one end to the other.and depending which way the wind is blowing i can get to tunstall in about five minuites, its just a quick mooch over the field s and im there
