  1. dont bother getting any !!! you obviously havent listened to what advice people have been giving you,you havent took the time to read a few books on keeping ferrets or ferret welfare before jumping straight in and becoming another "INSTANT". im dreading to see what happens to this ferret in the long run.no regular handling or excerscise,no doubt fed on poor quality meat.take advice and dont bother getting an animal, regardless of what it is until you have a bit of knowledge and also the time to look after it properly.youre mother and step father are not going to know wether there is anything wr
  2. she says they smell... bite.. and make howlong noises in the night. take no notice of any of that........thats just her and youre step dad upto no good after a few glasses of lambrini . dont bother getting ferrets until you have the time and the knowledge to look after them properly.....thats my advice !!!
  3. what sort of lurcher/long dog did you use for deer and hare pre ban
  4. alright brimmer mate. we wont be doing any more ferreting now until the season starts.i took the ferret out with us on our lat trip out just to get a run or two for the pup which he got .the ferret was put back in the box and back in the van the soon as that job was done.we got a good few half grown rabbits with the gun as the bigguns were scarce on the groundbut saying that there was a shed load of really small squeakers on the ground so by the looks of things they are still having young.in all honestyi think the woman was just pleased to have found a couple of lads willing to try and get he
  5. im not sure how long ago it was when the sett was covered with the netting but it has been chewed through and the field that belongs to the council that has also been netted has been dug under.this is part of the large warren that is in the woman's back yard.we will soon put a dent in the populatinn with the team once the season kicks in properly and ive got the dog up and running properly and the ferrets are back to full working fitnes.until then its just fun with the guns to dwindle the numbers down a bit
  6. im really looking forward to it and i think i can also say the same for john.we were suprised just how much game was on the new land that we got.the woman said on a night time it looks like the field is moving with the ammount of rabbits that is on there and she wasnt wrong.whe give it a quick blast with the lamp and there was rabits everywhere but 90% of them were out of shooting range and i haveng started the pup on the lamp as yet but we have some of the best ground to get im started.i think its also fair to say we will need about another 200 purse nets and a couple of long nets for one of
  7. well, myself and john-b had planned a trip up to our permission yesterday.i decided to take the new pup along with old faithful (sally)and bouncer. i also took my hob ferret as i wanted to get the pup a couple of ferreted rabbits to get him started and also to get used to seeing what it was all about.john also had the air rifle with himwhich turned out to be a good idea as there were rabbits everywhere.well the pup done really well,he marked the setts well.the ferret done what was expected and bolted us a few rabbits with no lay ups, which to be honest i was expecting as there were squeakers ev
  8. i was out yesterday on my permission with john-b and the dogs.we managed to bag a couple of easy ran rabbits with the pup which i was happy about.in one of the fields there are two horses.the pup was looking at them dubiousley and started to back pedal at one point.after a while the dog didnt take much notice of them so i let him off his leader and he just stopped in close proximity.my old lurcher and john's retreiver pushed a half grown rabbit out of a patch of nettles which was an easy run for the young dog.he gave it legs and the rabbit ran straight towards the horses.before the pup knew w
  9. he loves it .i didnt want to enter the pup just yet as he is only just gone 8 month.but he is eager and he has started hunting them up himself after watching my old lurcher doing it,but it is good to watch him doing what he supposed to at such a young age , cheers. col
  10. just had a walk round my local lakes again with the pup .hes managed to get another rat.he seems to be taking a liking to these and got his strike on them down to a tee .photo added later
  11. ive worked ferrets along side my father in laws harris hawks a few times but it wasnt for me.the bird did catch a few that bolted but id much rather run a dog along side the ferrets.i find this more enjoyable and theres less chance of youre ferret ending up as bird food
  12. you need to seek permission from the council or whoever it is you rent youre house from. i had the same carry on with mine.i had the housing officer here every other week because i had put kennels/runs ect in the garden without written permissioni wrote a letter to them ,i was granted permission straight away and nothing more was said about it.ive now heightened the fence and also just put another dog kennel up and i will be building a 12 x 6 pen round it.i had a number of complaints about having four dogs aswell, but i had words with the housing officer about this and nothing else came of it b
  13. i cant wait to get back out.the summer seems to be dragging on a bit, lol.ive got a new dog who will be just about ready for the off by the time the season starts, ive also got a sandy ferret kit to get going .the dog and the ferret absolutley love each other to bits so im hoping they make good hunting companions with each other.ive had to retire my old lurcher off now at the ripe old age of 13.she might get a ride out now and again to do some marking up for us and to show the pup how to go on lol.atb for the coming season the pup and the ferret playing together the pup holly the ferr

    swine flu

my girlfriend has just been confirmed as having suspected swine flu.what i was wondering is it possible for dogs/ferrets to be able to contract this virus.i know ferrets can contract normal colds/flu off us so what about this
  17. as some will know i got a saluki/whippet /greyhound + collie greyhound a few month back.he is now seven month old and is standing at 21 1/2 tts.at what age do they stop growing and what height do you think he will make.his father was a saluki grey and stood about 25 to 26 maybe a touch biggerand his mother ,collie /whippet /grey stood at about 24 to 25.i was hoping he would make the 24 ins mark but he seems to have hit a sticking point over the last couple of month and hasnt grown any more.is this normal for his age and will he grow any more or is this the height i can expect from the dog
  18. most of them do ..and they also pay as little as one pound each for them .i have been in the shop on a couple of occasions when ferret kitts have been took in and bought by the shop owner for the said price which in my eyes i dont know how they get away with it,the same as they sell mongrel puppies for 150 pound plus to people who have no experience with dogs.in my eyes these people are not in it for the animals,i think its all about profit.if we were to sell our ferret kitts for this sort of money we would be called worse than rotten for itbut its ok for shops to do it.these people in my eyes
  19. they still sell them in my local pet shop for 50 quid each, then they want you to buy a cage, water bottle feeding dish saw dust and straw for bedding, not to mention their food.so in total you could well be looking at spending about 200 quid on something that some peope know very little or absolutley feck all about, and some of the advice that is given by these people has come straight out of a joke book !!!
  20. some people might dis agree with me on this but i dont think it makes a great deal of difference to the ferret.the only thing in my opinion that the ferret is getting out of this is the scent of the rabitt.ive fed all my ferrets on rabbits and i honestly dont think it has made them any better at working.some ferrets take to working better than others.youve just got to put the time in with them .just give them the little and often approach to start off with,a couple of small warrens to start with is youre best bet,say like a two or three hole settpreferably with rabbits in.if you have a dog tha
  21. RAT!!.i had a walk round my local fishing lake tonight with the old lurcher and the pup. i also took along the little nipper rat trap so i could hopefully get a rat and let the pup have a look at one. well,to say it went to plan was an understatement.i had been there for around twenty minuites and spotted a group of five rats mouching on the embankment .at this point the dogs were going crazy but i didnt let them go.i put the dogs up the bank out of the way and went down and set the trap.by the time i had walked back to the dogs the trap went.so i got the dogs and walked back down to where t
  22. i agree with some of the stuff that has been posted, but at the end of the day they are after all young ferrets ,and their only source of defence is their teeth.i handle mine on a daily basis to get the ferret/s used to being handled.the kitt ive got in now stands and squeals at the cage door to be out ,she also thinks that the pup i have got is her mother and they play quite happily together. but saying that she has been handled from a very young age along with the other kitts i had in and as far as i know the other owner who took the remaining kitts hasnt had a problem with nipping.and for f
  23. here is a couple of pictures of my new ferret kitt.she is called holly ( named by my youngest son).she was bred out of my good working hob and john-b's black eyed white jill. holly holly and toby (the pup) playing in the flowers.
  24. i work both but my hob ferret is by far the best.myself and my mate who i ferret with were working a smallish sett last season and the jills we entered couldnt get all the rabbits to shift,so the hob ferret was entered and bolted the last of the rabbits.i have worked both over the years and still prefer hobs over jills
