  1. been out this afternoon for a couple of hours with the old girl,my old hob ferret and one of the new polecats.worked a couple of setts with the polecat just to see how it went.it entered the setts ok but it was trying to get hold of my hands on leaving the sett.so i finally got it picked up and put it back in the box .i moved straight on to my local patch near a road.i netted up a sett which i thought was only a six holer but i was wrong i entered old faithful.he wasnt down long before the banging about started.,as i was listening to this i seen something out the corner of my eye running alo
  2. i normally wear gloves anyway brimmer and my hands look like theyve been through a shredder anyway so a few more battle scars wont bother me any .when me and john were out a few weeks back we found a poley jill in a sett, instead of using my common sense and getting a spade behind it to stop it from backing into the sett we just put the other ferrets in to see if we could get it out, unfortunatley that didnt work and its still mooching about the place now..i can remember a good few years back finding a big hob poley under my shed.at the time i had my old lurcher and a border terrier.the terrier
  3. we will be back out,we might be up there during the warmer month aswell once ive got the gun re tuned(keeps the farmers happy ) and il probablys run the dogs on there at them.i just need to get my head round the loss of the two jills,it might take a while but i will get there .i had the same carry on a few year back with my ferrets aswell.some barsteward broke into my shed and cleared me out.they took i think it was nine ferrets, one of them was ten years old and wasnt any good to anyone but me,i had this particular ferret from a kit and he was as gentle as a lamb.i used to let the kids hold
  4. The animals deserve it mate, they would not give up, don't lose interest now! You have been doing all you can for the lost ones, sometimes it happens and you are doing your best to find them. Why not go back to the same ground you lost them on, they may just turn up yet. Don't give up on them, they may be eating there way out of a stopend as we speak! im looking forward to getting back up there next weekend mate,me and john were having a good laugh getting the rabbits out of the walls with a little help from bouncer and sally,it was fooking mental.we are out with my father in law
  5. i still want to get out,but it has taken it out of me losing the jills.i had a bit of a breeding programme ready for this season and i wanted to keep my same lines ,as the young jill i lost was one of the kits i bred last year and she turned out to be a cracker.im now stuck with five hob ferrets and no jills.john is after me breeding a couple of my hobs with his jills but it still doesnt compensate for what ive lost.il keep my chin up and see what the future brings i suppose
  6. i got two new polecat hobs on friday after losing my two jills ,not what i was after but i took them on anyway as the lad didnt want them anymore.the lad i got them off said thetve been worked a couple of times and have bolted the one rabbit.im still sick as a chip after losing the two jills and i know if i dont get back at it im gonna lose interest and end up packing it in.ive been hunting with ferrets for over fifteen year and i love every minuite of it.its just disheartened me as its the first time ive lost ferrets in this way.so im thinking of having a dodge out local tomorrow with the two
  7. no mate, myself and john were out over the last couple of days looking for them and no joy.i think it is fair to say that they are long gone.weve searched the sett that they went missing from and also every sett in the surroundng fields with the locator box and drew a blank.i must thank john for all his help and putting himself out for me....its much appreciated mate and thanks to the other lads on the form for their offer of help .its nice to know youse are there :thumbs:respect lads
  8. were the bite marks very big?it sounds like it has come into contact with either a rat, stoat or weasel.i think youre best bet would be to take it to a vet and get it looked at properly .it may need a coarse of antibiotics to clear any infection it has
  9. ask him to get the picture up of the speeding ticket off last year brimmer....its mad...hahahaha
  10. i dont think tnt would make an impact on that sett mate.as you know we dug a good majority of it and came up blank.the only thing i can think is that the tubes have ran down the bank and went over he 15ft markso they could have been away before we realised there was out wrong.as i said yesterday,i can understand one ferret doing the disapearing act,but two at the same time.something doesnt add up
  11. been back in the house just over half an hour after the day from hell.we managed nine rabbits but they count for nothing.done a few new settson some land in a neighbouring field to our permission.we started off ok catching a few.we moved on to a sett on an embankment and netted up.after waiting a good while we got a rabbit to bolt then everything went quiet.my ferrets came back to the surface but johns was missing.we took the nets off and left johns ferret box beside the sett.after waiting about an hour or so we returned to johns erret box and his ferret was safely tucked up sound asleep.we de
  12. one ferret in that big 85 holer we work....nah,that doesnt work.id rather have a couple of ferrets down a sett and have to dig, rather than have a ferret thats knackered after doing a couple of warrens and not willing to work for the rest of the day.if the setts are small then fair do's ( less than 15 holes) one ferret will suffice but then whats to say that ferret isnt going to kill to ground and you still have to dig
  13. nah...hes a hooooge dog ferret i got a couple of month back.ive just got him finger friendly and giving him a bit of work
  14. dunno wether to take that crazy a**e sandy with us,or just leave him at home??
  15. Col dunno about you but i'm ready to go mate LOL just got some sarnies to knock up and im done mate.the old girl has been pacing the floor again waiting for the off, shes done that many laps of the sitting room shes fell asleep
  16. 20 quid is a small price to pay.in my eyes it will give you more incentive to look after it properly.im breeding mine again this year.i will be giving some of the young to people i know will look after them and work them.the rest will be sold on so i know that they will go to decent homes...saying that nothing is guaranteed.
  17. get another seven stone off him john and he will catch a few...hahahahaor theres two other otions....let him fill his boots with squeakers when theyre out and about..or chain him to our alfies back leg
  18. im out on thursday with john-b.i MIGHT be running one of my other dogs along side the old black dog.john is bringing his flat coated lab to mine to get them socialised before the outing.sohopefully get a few more rabbits for the pot
  19. id never be without my old girl, she saves a lot of time with netting up to find nobody home.she marks really well a positive mark ,netted up and waiting for the occupant the final bag and shes still going strong for a dog nearly thirteen years old
  20. it will have to be socks as she doesnt like the dummy use an old plastic pop bottle and stick some rabbit fur round it.if need be add a bit of sand to give it weight.ive used this method with all my dogs to get them to retreive to hand and its worked every time as they dont see it as a training dummy
  21. ive just found out that the rspca are either going to ban or try and fine people who put coats on their dogs.they supposedly think that it is cruel by restricting the dogs movement and also making the dog sweat causing de hydration.i think this is total rubishfrom the rspca and just another load of shpeil on their behalf.opinions please
  22. look at it from this point of view......would you like to be picked up by youre tail and draged about.............i think the answer to that would be no
  23. well in mate, another good bag.been out myself today with a lad from round here on his permission.i wont be going again
  24. i wouldnt even bother stepping out the front door without the locator in the bag.and get rid of the muzzle, youre asking for trouble using one of those things.save youre money and buy a collar and box.until then either leave youre ferret at home or get rid of it til you can afford a collar and box
