Took my dogs out for a mooch yesterday, got them working a field of oilseed rape, and got to admit watching their different styles is fascinating. My whippet cross tears through cover head down watching the rape part looks like the velociraptor scene in jurrasic park no sign of the dog just the movement of the rape as she crashes through. My lurcher on the other hand runs around like a demented springbok, fortunately their different styles complement each other as they catch plenty at this sort of game. Anybody agree that summertime work brings out the best in your dogs from the point of view

Always favoured bedlington blood in my lurchers purely for their scenting abilities, never seen a better cross for this purpose. Good luck mate.

Why is it that the mere mention of plummer or hancocks name evokes the worst feelings of the lynch mob on this site, and gets you labelled as a syncophant because you voice your opinion. Its two people that were known figures in the lurcher world that were talking about, not bloody hindley and brady. Methinks i hit a raw nerve in certain quarters.

Very easy to slag off a dead man, fact is plummer love him or hate him was an intelligent man bulshitter to a point very true. But he didnt rely on overpriced dvds to present his case. Why some of the extreme cyber hunters on this site hate him so much defeats me, jealousy perhaps.

At the end of the day what is a lurcher, essentially a mongrel albeit a highly specialised one bred for a specific purpose, got to agree with whin on this one handsome is as handsome does. A lot of the so called lurchers these days couldnt catch a rabbit in a phone box.

I agree with you mate. But i couldnt bring myself to buy that shitty fish and chip gospel.

Read in paper today police in hull are putting out cardboard effigys of policemen to deter shoplifters bet thats got some of you crapping yourselves. Next time your poaching in east yorks watch out that scarecrow could be an undercover cop.

When i was racing whippets the non ped grews long flat back types were far superior in speed to the peds with their roachy little backs. Are you telling me that things have changed that much. The length of back gives a dog of that size an advantage from the point of view, that the spinal column acts like a coiled spring giving the dog greater forward impetus.

What is this great obsession with some guys about the height of their dogs, any dog less than 24ats seems to scare some blokes off. There are shit loads of dogs less than 24 that can really do the buisness. Why not start looking at the length of back, conformation and feet before writing a dog off. ATB BLUCHER.

Its because througout history the english have always kicked their arses.

You can do that with a blade of grass stretched between the palm of your hands and your thumbs and blow into the arch between your thumbs, works on hares too , very old poaching method.

Double of my 2year old beddy grey x collie grey did you get that dog from chesterfield. Will post a pic at a later date, mines working out great.

Some very intresting replies here, i think whin hit the nail on the head as regards the amount of training required to produce a dog for this work. I wonder if the net men of old that we read about really could single handedly manage to set a net, handle the dog, and make off with a double figure haul. Sounds like bloody hard work as anyone who has had a go at poaching knows. Anyway thanks for the input ATB Blucher.

Seems to be that nowadays, a lot of the young lads coming into the lurcher game, are becoming quick slip and kill merchants. The last couple of lads that came with us, their dogs had obviously never seen a long net. Do you think that training a dog to the nets is now becoming a bit of a dying art. And if you ever had a good net dog what was the breeding you favoured for that type of work. Regards Blucher.

One of the best working lurchers i ever saw, was a collie blooded dog that no way resembled peoples ideas of what a lurcher should look like. It was a distrusting shifty cur but believe me it would go ranging off on its own and always return with something for the pot. That was nearly 50 years ago, and i wish i had something out of that bloodline now.

So gordon brown has condemmed the execution of akmal shaikh in china, on drug smuggling charges. There always seems to be a valid reason for the defence and ultimate release of convicted criminals, in this case on the grounds of mental health. Apparently he suffered from bi polar disorder. As gordon brown put it this country is opposed to the death sentence in all cases, (WHY).Did anyone ask the opinion of joe public in this country. Sorry but i dont subscribe to that point of view, my opinion is when in rome do as the romans do. Im pretty sure this country would be a better place if a lot of

Bedlington Greyhound versus Collie Greyhound
BLUCHER replied to wuyang's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Got a beddy grey x collie grey at 20 months now and she has picked up the best traits from those crosses shes intelligent and pretty fearless would certainly reccomend this cross. -
My best was 6 with my beddy whipgrey it used to mark the briar patches and me and a mate would go poking around with a good stick, strong boots needed for that game, still do that but now got a saluki whippet and a beddy grey collie grey, its great watching the whippet stood on 3 legs waiting for the bolt and how it manages to be in the right place at the right time, and the beddy cross pinpointing them with its nose. Id reccomend that sport to anyone, its great when you watch how those dogs position themselves, and gel with you as part of a working team gives me a great buzz.

Talking to a mate yesterday, tells me he went to manchester for the hull city man city game on saturday, anyway after the game goes back to the car to find it wheelclamped, along with 6 other cars in the same street. All the owners looking for the no parking sign they finally spot it about 12 feet up on a lampost, the sign measured about 15 inches by about 5 inches no wonder no one spotted it. Anyway he was approached by three shaven headed gorrillas, another three were sitting in the crew cab, you know the type hard as nails when mob handed, quiet as a church mouse in a 1 to 1 situation.
