  1. Im going there in september to do ND Game and Countryside managment. Went for the open day to look around, very smart, got dog kennels so you can have your favourite canine friend with you, armoury, their own pheasant/partridge shoot, stalking ground. Good all round spot, they also do a gamekeeping specific course.
  2. are 222 rounds pricey?? What do you mean your .223 is conditioned for roe deer?? I think he means that 223 is legal for roe in scotland but not england so he must have to have it as a condition on his license as he's not in Scotland. DunK Correct, I have the same condition
  3. Yes I gave him a basic explanation but didnt know the technical stuff. cheers fellas!
  4. I know people are going to think I'm completely daft asking this question, but a shooting friend (non rifle shooting) and I were talking about my rifles the other day and he asked me how a 223 and a 308 can have the same 1:12 twist rate and shoot completely different rounds - my 223 shooting 55gr and my 308 150-180gr. I wasnt sure how to answer his question correctly; But i said I new a place where his question would get a professional answer.
  5. That was the only thing I was concerned about, although now not owned they would have at some point being owned so didnt know whether that affected anything. But you all have confirmed what I thought, if they are killing wild/game birds I am within my right to control them. Cheers fellas
  6. Is there anywhere I can buy a fully complete kit or would I have to buy everything separate?
  7. I'm really interested in starting to reload, I currently just use factory loads but would like to try reloading for the improved accuracy and the benefits cheaper ammo. How much would it cost me to get a complete? Whats the best gear to have for a novice? I'm intending to reload for my .223, .243 and .308 but I will start with my 223 until fully confident. Cheers, woolly
  8. I have BASC and Countryside alliance. Countryside alliance is £15 for under 25's
  9. My problem is cats! Last season I lost a few of my poults to cats I have knocking about on the shoot. How do I stand legally? I must add these are feral cats; I have a road running through the farming estate I work and keeper on and cats have been dumped and abandoned and are now living wild feeding on rabbits and my pheasants. I know they are not owned and are pets because I know all of the locals surrounding the estate and I know what cats they all have. Can I legally trap or shoot them or do I have to use non lethal methods and deterrents?
  10. Dont think its a popular calibre over here, not because its no good, just no real need for it. They kick like a mule from what I've read
  11. I have both rifles, I have a stainless howa 1500 in .223 and a browing medallion a-bolt in .243. My honest opinion is that the howa is a rugged little rifle, its not a looker but does the job very very well. My browning is a good looking rifle and also shoots very well. To break it down there isnt a difference in rifle accuracy, if your after the better looking rifle go for the abolt if your not fussed the howa. I just wish my howa had a detachable mag like the abolt, but thats nothing that should sway your decision.
  12. Whats the best feed to give mallard ducklings from day olds?
  13. Just getting my 243 fitted with a wildcat this week so havent shot deer with a moderated rifle, but I have one on my .223 and shoot foxes and I can totally back up what Mr_Logic and IanB have said. Sound reduction is a massive plus; a few times I've shot a fox then shot another only 1/2 fields away. A friend of mine has a .270 and he would never fire his again without a mod.
  14. Howa 1500 stainless lightening, bushnell 6-18x50, wildcat P8 and 40gr federal BT's - foxes dont seem to like it!
  15. What you reckon about these, any good? http://www.countrysupplies.com/item.asp?i=737
  16. Has anyone got a pair they'd recommend? I've used the Prologic Max4-ThermoArmour Salopettes for the last two seasons but ripped them last season . They were brilliant, very warm, comfortable. Only obvious problem was you can only go in water as high as your wellie thats why I've decided to bite the bullet and buy a pair of waders. Whats the best pair I can get; Im after a reasonable price, warm and most of all comfortable. Cheers, Woolly Also, whats the difference between cleated, felt and studded cleated sole? and which is the best?
  17. Cant remember the make of mine, its a good quality one and I paid a fair bit for it but I wish I'd seen the Harkila one. It looks the dogs nuts, got good reviews off everyone. You can fit 2 roe or a good sized sika (proven in a stalking article in mays Sporting rifle) and for under £60 you cant go wrong. http://www.deergear.co.uk/shop.asp?category=Roe%20Sacks
  18. Just out of curiousity, what time are you finding is the most productive time to see bucks? Is there a time slot you find deer suddenly appear? Havent got my first buck of the season yet, only seen does when I've been out; but I've been looking through my diary and found that the majority of my bucks last season were shot between 8.30-9.30.
  19. Yes... dont get one, save a little more money and get a better quality one. I found this out the hard way, I bought one about 3 years ago, I was still in college doing my A levels with a part time job so could only afford an escort (I paid £325 I think), while out on the marsh after geese this past season I fired a shot and the pressure from the shell going off had damaged my action big style. I sent my gun to the BASC firearms dept for tests and they discovered the materials escort make arent up to scratch. The problem found with mine is a small locking tooth on the bolt had worn down and th
  20. Abit of an update: I finally made a set of quadsticks and being putting them to the test this week. As expected they were very good while paper punching and I was getting very impressive groups. In the field Ive had a large dog fox and several rabbits using them and been very impressed, they take abit of getting used to when trying to set up. However, my ground suits them, I shoot over alot of open flat farm land so never had the problem of trying to set up on uneven ground or in woodland where sticks/leaves could interfere while setting the sticks up. I like the sticks but they will not suit
  21. I have always used the liquid, but find soaking the kitchen paper abit fiddly and a pain. I'm going to try the cream form and I've got a mate whos a hairdresser, is it bought directly as a cream, or do you have to mix a powder with a liquid to make the cream?
  22. It looks very similar to mine when my bitch was a pup. Here's a photo of mine from the season just gone, she's 2 years old here. Its an absolute cracking little dog, retrieves anything from rabbits to pinkfeet.
  23. Not spitting the dummy out in anyway mate and sorry if my meaage came across that way; Im very grateful for your advice. You've just hit the nail on the head, the sticks may be brilliant at getting good groups on paper, but Im interested to see how they fair when actually out stalking, like your client found they could be abit fumbly setting up if a buck appears at closer range.
  24. As Riohog has already said, this is the sort of thing you should be looking at http://www.bushwear.co.uk/nostyles.php?Pro...&ClassID=46 I bought one when I got my howa, found it brilliant, I just added a couple of pieces of cardboard to raise it slightly more. Its also got a handy little zip compartment which you can put extra rounds, insurance/ FAC copy etc.
