Best place to get spices is a Chinese supermarket or Asia store. You'll probably need quite an amount and bags of spices are a Lot cheaper there than in a supermarket. Try here for a few recipes Biltong recipes on recipezaar But basically black pepper, coriander, rocksalt, chillies etc are a good start. I think the potential for serious harm would depend on how much over the recomended dose you went...5% over would not be too bad 5 times the reccomended dose could be nasty.

Do you know if the vet had sent skin biopsies from the euthanaised animals off for analysis? Pass this reference onto the vet if you can - the symptoms rang a bell.
