Gamekeeping assistant ?
FightTheBan replied to jackdean1230's topic in Gamekeeping, Conservation & Shoot Management
I have read what you have written, and disagree with it. There are probably more than 500 graduates coming out of gamekeeping colleges every year to fill 50 odd trainee jobs. What he needs to get a start in his career is something that sets him apart from the crowd, and thats called experience. Any mug with 2 GCSE/standard grades can waste two years at college, only a select few can stick a full time keepers job for two seasons. Three friends of mine went to gamekeeping college (two are out of work and one is a joiner), my best pal got a keepers job at 16 (because he was keen and ambitiou -
Gamekeeping assistant ?

''one that has gone to Sparsholt and one that has gone to somewhere such as Moulton college '' I would hire the one that had been out working instead of at college. When you see the amount of monkeys that go to gamekeeping college, youd be lucky if 10% will ever be in the job afterwards. Instead of putting all your energy into going to college, getting out and doing the job, whilst sending away CV's to every job you can will pay off far better in the end. College should be the last resort if you cant get a job first, or if the job is willing to put you through an apprenticeship type sche -

''did and got a interview on the 3rd of january. i wouldnt have know about it if you didnt say '' Well done mate! Its my pet hate when people ask for a job but wont take the initiative or effort to send away cv's and ask keepers. They arent going to come and offer you the job, you have to go to them. Well done in you interview, wish you best of luck and you deserve it for going out your way and making the effort. -
top dogs like golly arthur and bud
FightTheBan replied to bobhunter's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
To be honest mate, there are plenty of good dogs out there that noone knows of. It all depends if the owner likes to rant and rave about their dogs. In my experience, people who keep themselves to themselves have decent dogs, and the people who try to ride on a dogs name forever more like to make money from pups. -
Does the box make a small bleep noise when you turn it on, and are any of the red lights visible to start with. I think mine does this, ill try it later. Be carefull what batteries you put in them, they neeed to be the right ones.

At cubbing time i had a phone call off a woman who has a croft and keeps about 30 rare breed sheep. Every night, a newborn lamb was being taken. I tried everything from lamping, snareing, waiting first light, waiting last light. All to no avail. By this time the tally was up to 9 lambs(which was a significant loss to her) and she was getting desperate. So i went out with the terriers and walked just about every wood in a 3-4 mile radius (after getting farmers permission). Every known fox earth wasnt holding, and i was in a long strip of woodland on a steep banking with the terriers. All i c

''didnt look much like a shooting store '' Yeah, well he deals from a shop at the side of his house, but hes got a huge store and a workshop (the guy who does all the work on the shottys and rifles really knows his stuff). Just pop in and speak to him, never let us down yet.
-
''If it is for other stuff then Neil Sutherlands place '' Try to do all my business with niel. The guy only has a small shop but if you ask him for anything (i mean anything) he can get it. He also gives great deals, and his prices are second to none. Unlike north ayrshire who sell you anything, whether its right for you or not. Reccomend the guy 100% genuine. If you need any more info you can phone him through his website (pro-shooting or something like that).

Ta stealthy, i put a second nest box in tonite, which she is using as her own space. Hopefully this helps the situation.

Its a sad affair that things like this go on when its so unneccesary. Alot of it is, in my eyes, about respect. Dumping of game for whatever reason is disrespectfull to the sport, to yourself and most importantly to the quarry. The people who do this are not sportsmen, and never will be because they have the wrong attitude. It doesnt matter if you stay in london, or on a perthshire hillside, if you have the wrong attitude, you give the sport a bad name. I live in the town myself, but i do everything i can to avoid shit like this. The peole who drive halfway across the country,

''Is she seeing it as a threat or just seeing it as a kitt and dragging it about mate ?? '' I dont think she is seeing it as a threat, because the wee jill does not fight back at all, and she doesnt drag it like a kit. It is full on, shaking it about trying to hurt it. The wee polecats neck is a mess, i think the best idea is to give it to someone with only one or two ferrets. As i keep 10 together, its like a pack and any 'new incomers' are always given a bit of stick, but nothing like this.

I took on a very small polecat jill (no biger than 5 inches long), a few weeks ago and am having a great deal of bother at the minute. The problem being my dominant jill (a 6 year old albino) is constantly giving it stick and ragdolling it about the hutch. I experience this with every new ferret i introduce, but after a day or so it usually stops once she has shown her dominance. This has gone on for two weeks, and i need to do something or she will kill it. I have split it for today, as she is looking poorly, but i am not a fan of doing this as i will never be able to box and work the

Still cant believe someone would buy such a horrid thing LOL Brings a smile to my face every time i see it, what a legend!

''Earthdogs for me should be kept on the lead right up to they give a mark at a hole so it doesnt matter if they are stock broken or not'' Maybe for you mate, but a dog like that around here isnt worth its weight in shite, i know from 1st hand experience. If they cant hunt and use their nose the would see very little game around here. Foxes will be found in anything from rabbit burrows to under tin sheets in an old tip. And what about working rock piles etc. Ive learnt that to get the numbers you have to trust the dog, my russel often leads me to the holes, cant ask for any more than t

Really nice dog tdave. Looks very switched on, nice to hear your persistance paid off.

People who breed their dogs and then hand them out to every tom dick and harry, whether they turn up at the door with their socks tucked into their trackies or not, are just as much to blame as the lads themselves. Some people like the idea of having a kennel full, and shift them on as they please. 90% of the pups bred advertised as 'good working lines' or '110%' arent worth their weight in shite. Another thing that pisses me off is people advertising 'dog wanted, doing its job'. If you havent the time or patience to bring on a pup and get a bond with it, you arent a real dog man, you ar

''I'm on Black Islanders at the moment and can't fault them.Absolutely superb'' This would be my second choice. Meindls or black islanders, you wont go wrong. Wouldnt spend my money on anything else. -
Nice one. Sounds like you had a great day. All the best.

''Fair play to you for taking on the big place on your own, gorse is a b*****d to get amongst'' Aye, a few heart in mouth moments when the dog went off the box i thought id bit off more than i could chew Thankfully the fox didnt bolt as i wouldnt have a hope in hells chance ofhitting it in the thick of it. Forgot to add to my post, the terrier work was carried out on shooting estates for gamebird protection.

''Will a ferret slip out of a collar'' I find that if you can slip a finger under the coller, the ferret can slip out it. Do them up as tight as you can (whilst still being comfortable to the ferret). With regards to multiple collers, the reciever can pick up as many collers as you have, but i had a dig a few weeks back where 3 ferrets were at it, and the locator was picking up some interference, making location tricky(Its an mk3 with pinpoint thing). I work 6 collers together with no problems.

Great pics mate. Its an art to grt action shots like those.

''good read.do always go out on your own?'' Naw mate, but my wee brother, who i usually go out with, is a keeper and he was out digging today himself so couldnt make it, and my other pal was away christmas shopping ! I usually bring one buddy with me, dont like turning up on permission with loads of folk. It was too good an opportunity to let it pass, and im getting impatient waiting for the new locator. Bryan off the site has been a great help and is getting one brought in from america as he has ran out of stock.

''cheers for posting anyway mate i enjoyed reading it '' Nae bother mate. Might post more, but see so many honest people getting shot down in flames by tossers, you wonder if its worth it in the end.
