Kept hearing a cough coming from our court we found the ferret in question our best worker a silver jill called daisey looked down her throat that was as clear as a bell by the sounds of the cough it sounded like a hairball so we gave her some anti hairball paste for a couple of days still no joy so my daughter took her to the vets on monday the vet said after £40 it may be a throat infection it may be lungworm or it may be something stuck ? she gave us a week of antibiotics to see if it would rule the infection query out the ferret is still coughing it sounds like she is trying to cough som

Always feed the night before ferreting this seems to work ok for us
-
funny you should say that about the pigeon heads cos when we put woodies in our court the ferrets always tend to chew the heads off and eat them 1st before the bodies

Bloody hell £90 is a lot for a vasectomy especially if it dont work The hob does work and works well £90 was the cheapest we could find in our area to get him vasectomised we were getting quotes as high as £125 some vets couldnt even give us a price cos they had never carried out a vasectomy on a ferret ???
-
This vet is obviously is on the make of course you can have jills spayed 5 of my 10 jills have been spayed without any health issues at all its not cheap but if this lady is never going to breed from it or as some people dont have the room for a hob its costs about the same to have a jill spayed as having a hob castrated at my vets about £60 or £90 to get a hob vasectomised but this price can vary dramaticly from vets to vets

We work 10 jills of various colours and 1 white vasectomised hob they all work well if i had to pick only one colour and sex i would prefere the white jills only because they are easier to see in heavy cover etc this is an age old question that nobody can really answer for you its something that is a personal prefrence and you will find your own prefrence in time but dont be put off by ferrets colour or sex good bloodlines is the most important GOOD LUCK MATE

4FT or 3.6 min spun poly in canary yellow day glo yellow or white easy to see lasts for years but if you are just starting up 10z nylon are quite a good net and last for years when you feel ready have a go at making your own nets you will make mistakes to start with but practice makes perfect so they say and there is no greater feeling when you see that rabbit hit a net you made yourself GOOD LUCK MATE

Got poleys/whites/a sandy and a silver prefere the whites easier to see in cover but thats the only reason working ability has got to be above anything else in my book colour doesnt matter much

Well done mate at least you got that one your little brother seems to like ferreting keep him at it

As previous posts ferrets in the breeding season can do some of the most out of the ordinary things expecially if pregnant or having a phantom try letting them settle down for a few days and then try picking her up again see if she has calmed down it can be quite a shock when a ferret does something out of the blue for no apparent reason whatsoever but being it is out the blue it hopefully will sort itself out and she will soon be back to her normal self GOOD LUCK WITH HER MATE

If you love yer ferrets and your ferreting i dont think you ever get bored of it the 1st time i saw a rabbit hit a purse net was 33yrs ago i was 14 and i still love that sound of bolting and the whoosh as the rabbit is pursed in the net expecialy in woods when the leaves go as well no sound to match it we use longnets/guns/bolt traps etc but purse nets bring back where it all started for me and i LOVE IT still as much as the 1st day i started ferreting is there any other sad acts on hear or is it just me LOL good luck with the new litter mate ours are due in 4 days

That sounds logical thanks for the replies now i can pretent to the grandson how clever i am LOL
-
yeh we normaly use winchester subsonics but a bullet with no ricochet sounds tempting cos rimfires are a bas**rd for ricochets
-
This might seem like a daft question but my grandson asked me the other day when we were out shooting a few rabbits and i didnt know the answer he said why do stinging nettles always grow on rabbit holes we can go into a field and there are 8 rabbit burries in it and you can always tell where they are in summer because there are 8 bundles of nettles on top of them and not another nettle in the whole field which he was quite right about So i said i would try and find out why rabbit holes attract stinging nettles even under hedges does anyone on the forum have any theorys to why so i can g

Hi all has anyone on the site tried them new CCI.22LR segmented subsonic bullets yet ? they apparently have a head that breaks up into 3 peices on impact giving good stopping power and being they break up on impact stops ricochets which would be very handy for a couple of places that we lamp just wanted to get some feedback on them before we bought a load

Thats CHEAP mate we got quoted £37 per ferret from our vets yes you did read that right £37 at least dick turpin had the decency to wear a mask

We have always kept all ours in a together all year round including bert our vasectomised hob without any probs Most of our 10 jills have been spayed but the 3 that have not are my very best workers so if i want to breed a litter from one of them we take them out put them with my mates compleat hob after about 20 days we put that jill in her own cage to have her babies in peace then she is returned to the court when the kitts are weaned bert is quite a gentle hob and doesnt tend to rag the compleate jills to much he does his job and then lays out in the aviary sunbathing all summer WHAT A

Thats right johnboy its the disc from the rabbits spine that have got lodged on the ferrets teeth on all the 4 occasions that it has happened to us over the years it must be the because the shape of the bone ???

Yeh you right there stubby we have good 100per cent trust in all our ferrets
-
Dont know if anyone else has had this problem before this morning went out to pin back the doors on our ferret court And noticed one of our white jills had its mouth half open and couldnt close it we caught her up and my daughter opened the jills mouth and a small rabbit bone was wedged on her back teeth my daughter put her fingers in and pulled it off her teeth which came off quite easerly as it did on the other occasions this happened this is about the 4th time this has happened over the years to different ferrets we normally always feed whole gutted rabbit or birds with feathers on etc an

Regards hob or jill to work most work jills us included but we have had some very good hobs over the years too some ferreters prefere working hobs better it is personal choice both sexes are as good as each other and both have there faults why not try a combination of both if you dont want to breed get a good hob and get him vasectomised NOT castrated this varies in price from £40 to £70 depending on your vets and then get 1 or 2 jills the hob will take the jills out of season when need be and you can work both sexs together and have the best of both worlds good luck with whatever you de
