  1. "why i see it you got the option of tuning down a scope with adjustble mag. but you cant turn a fixed mag up " mmm true, I have a S&B 6x42 on my HMR and it does the job superbly clear and sharp, seeing better with the scope at dust than without, possibly a bit low powered for shots out to 100m, but If i were buying a new scope i'd probably go down the variable route, just because instead of doing all things pretty well and the moddle of the road shots well, a vairable is that bit more adaptable, and perhaps better if you are expecting varied (ie extreems of ranges you are comforta
  2. another I'd highly recommend in Hampshire is BE Chaplins in Winchester, they don't half do some good work, I had a new pin made for my S/S and they did a brilliant job, much better than the original person who fitted it.... they do more traditional work but they do build shotguns so it shows you that they know their stuff! Cheers DB
  3. oh right, there are loads of designs, i don't have my shooting mag ATM, but when i find it i'll flick through it 'cause i'm pretty sure there is an ad for what you're looking for... I think deep blue shooting do them as well, are you looking for a bead type or one of the longer tube type ones that extend down the rib for anything up to 3"? DB
  4. I don't know, but as jonathanl said, i'd have thought that if they renew your SGC they'd be likely to grant you a FAC, but it depends whether you got the conviction after you had your SGC granted, they may just choose not to renew your SGC, I'm no expert, i can only go on opinion.... best to talk to your FEO yourself... sorry to not be of any more help!
  5. please excuse my ignorance but what is a "bird buster" the closest thing i fpound was something for scaring birds away...
  6. no that shouldn'r be an issue, he'll just make sure that you know what you should do around a footpath, like not shoot towards it, I have a couple of permissions each with footpaths on them, and i don't have an issue, I have a conditioned ticket as well... DB
  7. THERE'S NO NEED TO SHOUT!!! seriously though, I don't know, they'll be going in the hold, so if you put them in a padded slip and then in an airline gun case then they'll be fine, but don't put fragile on the outside as they're just bound to throw it harder to see if they hear anything break... get there in good time i'd suggest and see what happens, print off the instructions on the web to take with you, or contact other outfitters who may have had british clients and see what their experience has been as for the sound mods... do not under any circumstances take them!! in some states
  8. yup pigeons for me too, they present such varied targets, they're fast, maneuverable (sounds like I'm talking about some fighter plane!) plus there's quite a few of them, even thought I don't get too many... DB
  9. when I say oil the action, I don't oil it like I do the barrels, I just have a cloth that smells of oil, (as I've used it so much) so that when you rub it over the action it just deposits a very thin film, hardly even that on the action, just to keep the rust at bay
  10. S+B.... all the way, I have a 6x42 and it's just superb, am the S+B you mention is the top of the line in the S+B stable, the other more expensive models are use the same glass, just in different clothes, as the zeiss classic range is the one below the Victory, I'm guessing they'd be slightly inferior to the victory range, but for us mortals i don't think it'd make a huge difference.... whichever you buy i think you'll be pleased with either, (also for my money I think the S&B looks better, the angles between the tube and the objective bell is shallower, the S&B is a couple of ounce
  11. hum.... i didn't think they'd get rusty inside.... I leave my guns out of the safe for quite a while if they've been in a damp environment to get all the moisture out, but even then i don't think you can be absolutely sure... you could get some of those scilica gel pouches to distribute around the safe, remembering to dry them out at least one a week on the radiator or by the fire... I don't know how much shooting you can expect before a malfunction... I would have thought a lot!! there's not an awful lot to go wrong, Tom Knapp, a Pro shooter for benelli has a benelli M1 I think that has 480
  12. nope, just clean it every time you use it, get every last bit of crud out of the barrels, oil them, oil the action inside and out, outside of the barrels,, chokes, and anything else you can get to and you'll be fine, only take it to the shop if it breaks or you feel you aren't doing it right or need some advice! Cheers DB
  13. don't discount Kimber,I don't have one but they do make some seriously good looking rifles- the 84M Longmaster classic and the Pro Varmint would be good choices, not much over 7lbs plus a heavy fluted barrel they did a review of one of their lightweight hunting rifles in Gunmart a while ago- you can find it on their website- Gunmart review link Longmaster Classic link Pro Varmint link they look like great lighter weight choices for a walkabout fox gun. Cheers DB
  14. Some people just resize the neck with rounds they intend to use in the same rifle and even go to the extent of inserting the bullet the same way up each time. I hope they put the bullet up the right way each time!! :clapper: This is what re-sizing dies are for. J. yeah I realised- read my earlier post DB
  15. I would agree there, I might consider taking such a shot, but only if the conditions were near as perfect as they were going to get, like a steady breeze instead of gusting wind, or preferably still air yes I know I am back tracking a bit here... but perhaps calculating and dialing hold over and windage, measuring wind speed, altitude, air density or whatever else you need is unsuitable say in fox shooting or stalking like you say, where you may only have a brief window of opportunity where the animal stops still. (and the ranges are likely to be closer) I'm not saying don't do it, but be
  16. mmm I forgot about that, I was under the impression people only neck sized brass to prolong it's life, not being worked so much and making it brittle with full length sizing done only in semi auto brass. but I think I am right in saying that a fire formed case from one rifle may not fit in the chamber of another?
  17. I think you had better read the thread again. Under 24" for a shotgun means it's a FAC weapon in the UK. Oh Yeah!! My bad! i read it and though of a combination gun- Bergstutzen DB
  18. you wouldn't be able to sell them to reloaders as they are fire formed to your chamber and may not fit in their rifle, and you'd have to have an awful lot of cases to make up any weight to take to the scrap man, not really sure what you'd do with them... DB
  19. true, if they take shots beyond their capability and/or in less than ideal conditions, but I still wouldn't do it as there are too many things to go wrong, plus if the animal is fidgety, or it may choose to move at the time you pull the trigger, even if it is relaxed, it may move and you might gut shoot it or clip it, 300m is a long way and the bullet spends quite a long time in the air where that animal could move.... Personally I don't like it nor do I recommend it , but I can't tell everyone else what to do.... but even so it's no longer the skill of hunting and field craft it's the pers
  20. Why? because I believe it is irresponsible, if you can get closer then do, the further away you are from a target the more magnified your aiming errors become, you're more likley to miss, or worse wound the animal. I feel that once you start stretching the range past 200m 250m in normal circumstances, excluding longer shots out to 300m whilst hill stalking, then you are no longer hunting, you are target shooting on live quarry, the same goes for the large volume pheasant shoots, if you want lots of shooting, go to a clay ground... or shoot paper like the BR boys do... DB
  21. YIKES that's some expensive ammo!!- I shoot Eley Hi-flyer and grand prix, they're plenty expensive for me! Have fun! i'm beating at the beaters day though (on a new shoot), the only day i've had a chance to go this season, hopefully I'll be able to come back next season! ATB DB
  22. I haven't had any experience of them myself, - here's a review of it's smaller brother on gunmart http://gunmart.net/accessories_review/bushnell_elite_6500_2.5-16x42/ DB
  23. Hi sounder, I hope I'm not being dim, but I couldn't make head nor tail of your post! Cheers DB
  24. can't halp for the exact model, but if you're stuck for manufacturers, I'd go for Warne mounts and bases or Sportsmatch, leupold.... heck any reputable manufacturer will do... DB
