Good man chevinfox. The full clip is mighty to watch. Shows exactly how agile and lightning fast a Fox can strike. It gives us an insight on how brave working terriers are when carrying out their work alone underground.
Good to see terrier work from other countries. Is the Jagd terrier mainly a Fox dog or do they work well to badger also? Is it legal to hunt badgers in Spain?
For deep puncture wounds as said before clean out with salt water.farmers when treating their cows udders use plastic syringes called dry cow tubes. A good few terrier lads around my way use them for treating deep wounds.I think there is some kind of antibiotic in them.they work very well.
Working terriers and pups should never be exchanged for money. Now a few lads on here will say that terrier lads are in very tight knit circles and won't part with pups or help lads starting out. That's far from the truth. Let's say a young lad is starting out and is interested in getting into the sport of working terriers. Get urself out with a hound pack. Observe and only observe for the first few wks. Gradually over time be more helpful with the hounds etc ie hang back late to help look for lost hounds etc. From the very first day out listen percent and only talk 20 percent!! It wont be l
As jcb said salt water does the trick.keep a bottle of salt and water solution in the truck and wash the terriers with it as soon as possible after their work. A terrier can be in the truck for a good few hrs after a dig especially if dug in the morning.imo during this time is when infections can take hold so it's important to get them cleaned up asap.
Seen this idea on a terrier website few yrs back.might be handy for ye lads. Drill a small hole on the edge of the shovel head.run a lead through the handle and clip it into the hole. Strap it over ye shoulder.Ideal for walking about as ur hands free!!!
Soft hands, hard terriers lolI've tried loads of different type 2 piece shovels over the yrs and found them all a waste of time.I fit slightly shorter shafts and handles to the shovels now and find them suit me for digging.
I use 20 mm hollow stainless tubing for my digging shovels.have the tubing welded to a round mouth head.it's light to carry and plenty strong enough.i don't have any v cut in them.I carry a small foldable saw for dealing with roots.very handy to have with you.
A terrier thats not game enough and leaves the quarry pass just a you break through.saw a few of these so called great dogs.all thats left is a good earth ruined with loads of holes opened up.
Exactly Neil. Not all huntsmen realise how difficult the job a terrier has underground to get the job done and think its a case of terrier in fox out.hounds tend to get preference over terrier work. As Said before no need to put ur reputation on the line with a young inexperienced terrier no matter how much promise its showing.
