    Its mad, there is so much free fruit out there just falling and rotting. I went to do some coppicing in a womans garden the other day she asked me if I wanted any apples off her tree when I jumped at it she took me round to her mums who had loads of apple trees and told me to take however much I wanted and I can go back every year and take what I want. This is on top of the dozen or so trees that are on waste ground near me that were positively groaning with fruit this year. Definitely making more next year.

    Ive tried making cider for the first time this year. Had an abundance of apples so I thought Id give it a go, got a load of wild crab apples to press as well as apparently they contain the most wild yeast and I wanted a cider that was just pure apple juice with no chemicals added. It was a bit time consuming even doing it as a group with one washing and cutting, one smashing the apples to a pulp and one pressing and putting in the fermenting bin but we had a good day and it was very social.     I'm suprised you get beaters without paying wages........ Most beaters dont do it for the money, i beat for the enjoyment of working my dog. The shoot has a great atmosphere and there are many more rewards than money. I also shoot in a syndicate, £550 per year and £15 to cover beaters fees and a hot meal at the end of the day.

    And I bet you leave them to rot like on the hare drives. Well done. I do a hare drive every year and not one gets left to rot, there shot for 2 reasons, to keep the dog men off the land and to stop the damage to farmers crops.

    She retrieves on every shoot i go on and every shoot i beat on, at least twice a week but has been up to 4 times a week during the season. Shes not short of experience or days out and it looks like she treats every shoot as her first shoot.

    Have a great, well trained ESS bitch that is 6 years old. Just lately she has started to push on a bit, she will flush a bird then chase it even though its 40 yards in the air, i can normaly counteract this and stop it before it happens but on the last 2 shoots shes just gone beserk and chased everything shes flushed, shouting and whistling to her doesnt register and she seems hell bent on retrieving the flushed bird, even though shes no chance of ever getting near it, any tips on trying to combat it?

    I know your frustration chap, i have an ESS bitch that will work all day, but can i get her in the car on her own on a shoot day, can i fook. When she gets there she will work all day, but will she fook get in the car when she knows were off to a shoot, when she knows shes off for a walk shes in there like a shot, comes from pure bred working stock, not petted and lives outside. Never had this problem in all the years ive had her but for some reason this season has been hard work. Shes 6 this year.

    And with attitude mate, you wont go far wrong, we pay £550 to shoot 10 days a season sometimes 12 if theres still plenty of birds about, there are guns that will moan when they dont shoot anything but thats shooting, i treat everyday i go out, wether it be shooting or beating, with respect, there are blokes that can earn a million quid by dinner time but they wont be as happy as me when im out working my dog or taking a 35yard pheasant.     I watch these programmes with a very open mind, obviously to start with its is a good cause to stop fishing for these magnificent creatures that surely have evolved from the prehistorc age, but what a way for a chef to raise their profile whilst trying to make it look like the chinese are barbaric. Shark fin soup maybe a dish that shows off your wealth but isnt fillet steak the same in this country, ok we may be a bit more humane in the way that steak arrives on our plate but just because we dont agree with the way shark fins arrive on the chinese plates doesnt mean to say they are going about

    Id ask the usual questions, how many birds do they put down, how many days do they shoot, how much land they shoot over, is it keepered, try and ascertain who uses the land and for what, ive been part of a syndicate for years and the last 2 seasons weve had loads of birds nicked, the landowner lets every pigeon shooter and his dog on it. Work days are great and will show the shoot that your not just there to shoot but care about how its run, vermin days are some of the best days shooting to be had in my opinion, a lot less formal and a good chance to catch up with your fellow guns outside of t

    Ive seen a few different holidays recently that i thought would be major, herding sheep in italy was one, camping out along the way with meals brought to you on route. The other was driving cattle through arizona on horseback, city slickers style. Why not try a working holiday on a farm or hiring a camper and travelling like previous posts, for the price of a packaged holiday you could rent a camper and do 3 weeks round europe, be great for the kids.
