  1. I suspect there is quite a bit of good blood gone abroad and the standard maintained. We are one of a few Countries in Europe where Badger digging is illegal. Plus, we only have Fox we can legally dig to, whereas in other Countries they have a few more bits and pieces to work Terriers on underground. If money wasn't as tight as it is with me, I would do my best to source some, if I needed to. Finding an honourable and Gentlemanly guy to deal with would be the hardest thing to find to do a deal with. I wouldn't like to keep a 1lb per inch Terrier, but when needs must, I have had a few. NEVER h
  2. Some of what I know as old fashioned Russells, were probably Sealyham blood in various percentages. Russell bred dogs 'up on the Leg' for running with Hounds. I suspect digging fellas maintained some Sealyham to keep the height down and working ability. The shortness in the back coming from the Russell side. All hypothetical, just what I think about some of these 'Old fashioned Russells'. The ones I saw being used as a youngster and some I had were certainly like some of the Sealyham Russells you see in some Yards now. There were some with a bit of length to them. I could be totally wrong.....
  3. Arse end of Terrier every time if possible.............it's only fair the guys digging do their best to do their part. I have seen my fair share of digs made harder and Terriers taken more kosh because of dull diggers. If you don't know how to do it, try to get out with some more experienced Terrier men.
  4. If you are going to use a flirt pole on a Puppy, You would get better results doing 3x3 minutes, with a few minutes break and rubdown in between. This time of year with a Puppy though, I would just enjoy it's company and concentrate on playing, socialisation and obedience while out and about, plenty of time for fitness training as he gets older. Most reasons some use FP's don't come in to the equation with a Puppy.
  5. It is unfortunate we can't discuss the full working abilities of individual Terriers and what they have done, prior to being considered worthy of breeding from. Even taking the Ancestry into the equation, with my ethos of 'best to best within a tightly bred Family'. I, personally, have never had two at the same time I wanted to breed from. Not putting myself at risk was in the forefront of my mind. Family man, Mortgage, kids, Firearm Certificate, completely clean Police Record etc, all kept me keeping myself to myself and not getting about too much. Some I saw 'go' weren't, to put it mildly, w
  6. Exactly my type of Terrier, especially the females, saw several like that years ago at the Kennels. At that particular time I was, In hindsight, wasting a few years of my time with the smooth Gouldy dogs I was trying at the time.......lol. Couldn't get the longevity out of them or get a breeding pair both at the same time.........could have been me expecting too much. Although, never really been much of a breeder of digging dogs, although I had enough work & time for a decent sized Yard of Terriers to go at.....lol. Hard to find a team of trust worthy, gentlemanly, like minded guys to work
  7. Most Terrier mens ethos is different to some performance animal practitioners'. It's not often you hear the term 'Brood stock' in the digging Terrier World. It's not often you would see a pair of related non working Terriers in a Pen and bred, where the Offspring are the only ones worked. In the Horse World a well used Stallion may never have Raced, but the ancestry and blood is there. Many examples of well bred Pet Terriers having Litters with Pups worth feeding. Sometimes breeding can be down to chances and gambles.......when the blood is there.
  8. Too much is expected of first crosses and they are given up on. Would you expect to be able to 'match' Siblings from the same Litter?
  9. Anybody got a cover to sell, in reasonable to new condition? I assume the Collar would be known as the Mrk 1....Lol. Done all the patching up, with longer screws and fatter O Rings etc. Finally time for a new one............cover. Edited to say, would consider buying a broken Collar/Transmitter complete..........be sensible on price please.
  10. lol..........I remember when the Knocker Box was considered THE new technology and some thought it was just a way to spend more money, which wouldn't catch on. Those guys preferred to use the more technical Cap on the Ground, a half inch thick 4ft long Bar and a quiet digging partner.......lol. I have been known to use a mk1 15ft Ferret Transmitter on a Dog Collar, now and then. Use with Ferrets and Terriers that way, so cost effective to have as a standby.
  11. My mistake, I apologise for that particular error............. Although I didn't say FULL LEGAL PROTECTION, WHICH YOU QUOTED ME AS SAYING, SO TO BE PICKY...........I ACTUALLY SAID "fully protected". That's it, finished, end of, finito. As said life really is too short....lol.
  12. You'd create a fight in a Monastery.....lol. Never said FULL in my posts and I said "legally DUG a Badger".....not many 6 or 7 years olds allowed to dig when I was around. I was one of those Kids, when there were no legal restrictions, weren't allowed near a Spade even then or after '73.......you know or ought to have known, full well what I meant Darcy. Read posts FULLY and thoroughly and don't misquote. There are plenty out there with many, many years of experience, not second Hand. You are right though, life is too short, but if you do correct people, correct them correctly, so it's correct
  13. ........and you 'Otter' get a slap for that one....lol.
  14. I'm still waiting for a 'dob of the Cap' from Darcy, I guess it'll be in his next Book. Can someone let me know if it is, I doubt I'll read it to see.
  15. My Dads friend had a Jack Russell, which was a Pet, given to him to run around his Stables. The thing had to go from her old Home for biting Milkmen and Postmens Trousers, with Police regularly knocking on the Door. Sounds funny but she Barked at everything, ripped up Mail, Newspapers and Carpets too. My Dads friend thought she was funny and 'game' (lol) and said he'd have her with him. To cut an even longer story very short, she used to get borrowed by my Dad and his mutual friends for Mooching about, she used to retrieve. It materialised into ripping up Papers and Mail though. She earned a
  16. EErrr...make sure you get your maths correct...... you could legally dig badgers up until 1981 to prevent poultry predation and crop damage. EErrr perhaps I should of phrased it better..............up until 1973 you could legally dig Badgers for no other reason other than purely for sport and fun of it. The same as using a Terrier on a Fox to ground, it is illegal, unless there are certain conditions. No...you were wrong, not phrased incorrectly. You said that from 1974 no one had legally dug to a badger. Plainly they have. Don't worry, I spotted it and corrected it for ya....

  18. They have been known to drag dogs into the Water and drown them too. Badgers and Otters work a Terrier over in totally different ways and a Dog experienced Otter will do more damage 'as a rule of Thumb' than a Badger with the same experience, if it has to. Some say 'pre-ban' in their posts, well Hunting Otters in the UK was voluntarily stopped, before it actually became necessary to impose any ban. Badgers became fully protected in 1973, the Sette in 90-91 and digging out a Fox and Hunting one with a Pack of Hounds completely legally, as we knew it, in 2005. So make sure your Maths is correct
  19. had a border x lakie on trial last year supposedly a very good sounder had him loose coming up to an earth and could see he picked a hunt along a bank and went to ground at 100 mph and came out at 200 mph about 30 seconds later completly bust up with his tail between his legs out bolted an otter straight after, and the the dog never entered ground again lol there tuff fu*kers I reckon it was more down to the dog than the otter, tougher game out there pre-ban. had a border x lakie on trial last year supposedly a very good sounder had him loose coming up to an earth and could see h
  20. My advice would be to use a dog lead clip, which swivels, on the Ring (if you attach twine directly to it). When a couple rows are done it will spin a little and keep the Net from twisting on itself. Double knot every time, regardless of the twine you use. Take your time and keep the tension even. There are several different ways guys find easy for them to make Nets, find yours. As said it's nice to catch with what you have made.
  21. With a quality Tripod, top of the range Scope, Rifle and Calibre like those....it's nothing too special and he doesn't actually kill many, from what I saw. In certain parts there are many Boars and a lot are driven past high fee paying Guns, from all over, with a great deal of pomp and ceremony (tradition). I am a fan of the 'Grass Roots' method hunt and 'Catch Dogs', but would take a days Rifle shooting if someone could pay for me....lol.
  22. 2 sets on e-bay at the moment, the older type. I have just got 5 new Tyres for Defender too, brilliant timing................deep joy!
  23. Just wondering what problems have been found, with the charging process and the connections, moisture and dirt etc. I suspect using it is the same as the old one. Tip for the constant beeping...cut the Jack plug off the end of old earphones and stick it in the port on the box to stop the noise. Meanwhile I will keep looking for the old set.......for now.
  24. I finally need to bite the Bullet to do some replacing and spend some money, forced to buy the new B&F Set. Tried to stay with what I am familiar with and get the old stuff, but too slow and keep missing out and B&F don't stock it. Are the advancements they have done beneficial or is the older stuff better? Pros and cons?
  25. Everybody has different expectations and requirements of their Terriers, for my personal requirements the stuff I owned and saw work from the 'Spartacus' specific blood, was not for me. Certain people around the time were happy, when he was put to certain females, the click worked for their expectations. Ken told me himself that his Russells would not suit me, so tried his black stuff and at the time 'Spartacus' was the dog of choice for his project. It was the Smithy blood I was hoping to tighten up on, but the females and males I had were left wanting............for me. Ovitt came to Devon a
