  2. those pics were from last year, i have a broody sitting now for the first for this year, i had 22 chicks in the brood in the pics, all of them and another 20 adult hens were taken by a vixen with cubs about may/june during the day . she and the cubs were shot by my neighbering sheep farmer about a week later. so i start this year with only 6 hens 2 cocks, time to make up the numbers this year me thinks.
  3. will do mate, should be picking them up end of month ish, weather depending. i will try and take some pics when i put them in the hive

  6. i didnt give a letter of permission, i just gave the guys number and the feo called him. regarding an open cert from the start, i`m a pest controller and need an open cert but still wasnt given one, so good luck with that one
  7. I see, yea the bee escape is called a porter bee escape. It’s sort of a one way valve, lets the buggers back down under the crownboard, but they can’t get back up, apparently! If you don’t have a super on top of your brood box, which won’t be necessary straight away, you won’t need to have the queen excluder on. The reason for the excluder is to stop the queen from going into the super and laying eggs in there too! She needs to stay down the bottom, as your honey will be in the super. I haven’t seen a glass crownboard before, that’s why I thought it was part of the exclu
  8. I will try and put it somewhere out of sight, i was a little concerned about theft. The hole is in the crown board there is a plastic "bee escape" i think its called that fits in it which can be taken out when a feeder is above it to let the bees through, i went for a glass crown board i thought it may help when just doing a quick visual check of the bees. the queen excluder is slotted steel.
  9. This looks good. Did you get it flat pack? If you did,how much did it cost. Im interested in bee keeping myself, hopefully its not too expensive. Yes mate it came flat pack but you can pay them to assemble it for you but its not cheap. my total order was £285 that was the red ceder national hive, clear wood treatment, hive tool, smoker and fuel, feeder and some lure to try and attract a swarm. I did go for the gable roof as i like the look of this more than the flat type and a glass crown board to view through both were a little more £s than the standard. When i opened the
  10. Well it came today and i have started putting it togather, i have done the base the brood box the roof and 4 frames, its quite easy as its very well made and everything fits perfectly. i`m really enjoying doing this and am looking forward to finishing it.
  11. I just thought i would try this whilst waiting to get a swarm call, never know i might get lucky. i did look at buying a nuceus but looks like i missed the bus for this year and the ones i`ve seen have sold out also they seem expensive at around £150 worth it i`m sure but i`m just worried if i lose them because i do something wrong its wasted, but if i`m not lucky enough to get a swarm this summer then i will order some early ready for next year.
  12. does anyone know how good the pheramone(spelling) attractants are as i ordered a pack of 2 with my order, they are supposed to get swarms to come to an empty hive, i thought i would assemble the brood chamber and get it out there with the attractant and some honey and see if i get lucky just incase i dont get a call for a swarm, i have also been told that a little propolis can help to get them in with the smell? one local beekeeper told me that the scouts for a swarm looking for a new home will travel up to 3 miles so am hoping that this may work for me?
  13. Hey john you dont happen to have a few bees knocking around that you dont want do you
  14. Brood boxes come flat packed? If so my advice would be to get your hammer out and ready and get fitting. Supers come flat packed? If so my advice would be to get your hammer out and ready and get fitting. Frames come flat packed? If so my advice would be to get your hammer out and get fitting. I have made my own hives from stock timber, takes a little longer, but more satisfying. I was going to make my own frames and just buy foundation, but i ran out of time for this year so bought frames instead. Got your smoker and hive tool? What floors have you bought? I have a solid f
  15. Right, i`ve been thinking about it for years but finaly took the plunge today and ordered a beehive and some kit i went for a british national in red ceder with 2 supers with all the frames etc. I have 2 local people i met whilst doing wasps for them that keep bees and have offered to help but just thought i would post to see if any of you keep bees and can give some advice for a newbie. I am hoping to get on a course soon thats run local to me, but missed the first one cos they were fully booked so am waiting to hear about dates etc i am hoping to collect a swarm as to buy bees in
  16. bloody black ladybirds comming over here taking all the reds jobs
  17. just thought i would mention that i think if you fit it yourself you may not then be covered on your house insurance for it, it cost me £1000 to get my woodburner installed but he was a registered fitter and put up a plate with his number etc on it. you know what its like these days you need a piece of paper for anything and everything
  18. saw my first queen wasp today, have you guys seen any yet?
  19. i love coppice crafts and have planted over 1000 ash and around 500 hazel trees amongst many others on my holding, what i dont use i can burn in the woodburner. i`ve got around 5000 willow stools that i`ve been coppicing and replanting for the last 4-5 years and am hoping to have a go at willow hurdles someday. as you say i think its important to keep these things going in the modern world or they will be lost forever
  20. I asked this very same thing a while back, cat sh#t all over my front and back garden at one point i didnt even let my kids play in their own garden I got alot of people saying shoot them, poison them, set dogs on them etc etc and even tho i didnt and would`nt do this i can understand why some people do, there comes a point when you get fed up of cleaning other peoples cat sh#t off your kids shoes or your carpet when it gets stepped in etc. In the end i got 2 sonic thingies that didnt seem to work at first so i cleaned off the lawns and washed them with a hose then put down those green g
  21. that'll be me then pockets are ok, but the trouble with them, or should I say "mine" is they accumalate a lot of crap, bits of twigs, dirt, dust, fag ash etc, you then throw a box (25) carts into your pocket, and all that shite sticks like a magnet, Im then picking bits off, or giving them a "blow" before loading, as I dont want that muck in the barrel, so YES I use a cartridge belt, holds 50 carts, keeps them clean, and I can easily see how many I have left, so, now,do I, get rid of the belt, as per nod's advice, It'll make me a better shot, wont it or say, feck what anybody else thi
