  1. I'm getting very pissed right now I've been fox free at my smallholding since I installed an electric fence around the whole perimeter, that was about 18 months ago and Ive built up a nice flock of chickens suffering no losses since, but in the last 3 days I've lost 2 fully grown hens (just head found with one and picked clean bones of the other) also 2 goslings only 3 day old in with chickens as hatched by a hen I get buzzards and kites on holding all the time but never bothered them before, would it be one that just learned to kill chickens? What can I do to stop it?, I've shut them in the
  2. I got some posts nearly 20 years old, it's just been the last few years they are rubbish I was chatting to a fencing guy and he reckons the eu banned something in the treatment?
  3. Does anyone use old engine oil to treat fence posts? I'm fed up of posts not lasting more than 4-5 years these days pressure treatment does nothing now it seems. My mate is a mechanic and I just picked up 5 gallons of old oil and can have as much more as I like, I've got an old 40 gallon drum I've cut the top off and I'm gunna soak the bottom foot or so that's going in the ground in there for a few weeks!! Have you tried this? Does it work?
  4. caught 2 swarms last sunday put 1 straight into an empty top bar the other into a poly nuc with 6 new topbars went to transfer the nuc to another empty topbar today and 5 of the bars needed cutting to fit as they had build new comb on all bars already and 5 were fully square the size of the nuc so needed to be tapered to fit the topbar amazing how fast they work when there starting out from fresh

  7. never had a jay but loads of jackdaws in mk4s in tunnels
  8. Checked next day and they have buggerd off oh well shit happens
  9. Caught my first swarm of the year today and put in one of my new built topbar hives only a couple of pounds of bees but should get going well
  10. How have your first inspections gone? Its funny my hive that went into winter on double brood and was by far the strongest is now by far the weekest and my smallest colony last autumn is now bursting at the seams and is now on double brood, the other 2 nationals have brood on about 5-6 frames my 2 topbar hives are alive and laying although 1 i should think had no more than a couple of hundred bees, so have put some syrup on and closed them up abit Got loads of rape out all around me at the moment but with all this rain i dont think they will be able to make the most of it
  11. Nice one, made a few gallons of cider myself in the past just mixing apples from vasrious trees. Always said that as soon as I have a garden right for the job I will plant some cider apple trees, you only get proper cider from cider apples. Where did you get the trees from? Andy I got them from the victoriana nursary, i got 5 trees total so £15 each, i got a crab apple along with the cider trees to help with pollonation as even tho i have a small orchard i`ve never had great crops bar the 3rd year after planting. How did your cider from normal apples turn out?
  12. thanks mate, will be awhile before i get many off the cider trees but i have a bramley and a few desert apples in the orchard and didnt think i could use them i may give it ago this year
  13. i`ve just planted my first cider apple trees "yarlington mill" at my holding, so in a few years will try my hand at making some cider, thier on m25 rootstock so should get pretty big, only 4 trees at the mo but i have got a load of rootstocks growing as i`m going to try grafting some of my dads apples this year so i will graft some more cider trees this time next year. If anyone whos ever made cider could give some tips or useful links that would be great.
  14. my light sussex are the same, i think you need to confine them for a while with only a small run to get them to put more weight on but i`ve never tryed it.
  15. just out of interest how much is a farm with outbuildings and 7.5acres. to bloody much, the house is in need of total revamp due to some twats breaking in and ripping all pipes and lead up, but just lets say i wont have much change left from £200k And thats very cheap, a place just down the road from me with 6.5 acres, bungalow and 2 poly tunnels sold for over £600k. We gave up looking for a place to live on with land just silly money round here, we just brought a 4 acre field 2 miles down the road 7 years ago and started from there, keep sheep, goats, pigs, chickens, bees.
  16. like to see the pics when your ready t-man.just had a hive given to me a few weeks ago with bees they were out flying 2 days ago i have a lot to learn quick. Will do
  17. I did my oa last week, i brought myself a varrox vapouriser and its very easy to use, (after much reading and thought vapourising is my chosen method of using the acid) I`m quite suprised at the drop already after just a few days, i`ve also knocked up a false floor with a cutout that it fits neatly in so i can use it on my topbar hives aswell.
  18. anyone get any bee gear for crimbo? i got a new full bbwear bee suit, a new hive tool, a skep for swarm catching and 2 more bee books i`m just about all bee`d out. I have sold off my weight lifting gear and brought some woodworking kit for the garage, and am now making my own topbar hives to a design i found online have made 2 and on my 3rd with all new timber they cost me around £50-£60 each, i like them because they are so simple, i will put some pics up sometime.
  19. magnum trap working fine, the wasp and mole come up saying "server not found" for me.
  20. My log splitter has now sold.
  21. Well it cost me around £1100 about 4-5 years ago when i used to get wood off my mate (whos a tree surgeon) to sell a few loads through the winter. It is one of the best i looked at for the money, being able to split logs upto 24" it works upright or horisontel or any position in between and also i think most important it has auto return so when you let go of the lever to move cut logs or turn for another split it takes itself back to your preset starting point which saves loads of time. I suppose i would be looking for £500 ovno, any less and i may aswell hold on to it for my own use (
  22. I`m thinking of selling my splitter if anyones interested. Its a woodline multipla 6-8 ton 2 speed with extra 4 way wedge, honda engine.
