  1. I know you said Northern Ireland. But we are running one on Sunday May 1st in Kilkenny. We are only two miles from Junction 9 on M9, so only an hour to Dublin. Not that far really. Let me know if you need any further information. Good Hunting Johnny85
  2. Listening to the level of knowledge and experince, and no insult intended. I suggest this man hunts with a few different packs, goes see the kennels, learn kennel routine and looks at the costs involved. If he is stil vey keen then. Istead of a pack, why dont he get two or three and hunt them to start with. Its a lot of work, money and effort in a pack.
  3. I have heard of the Dove Valley Mink Hounds not this pack. Is this the right name. They are a very very old pack, long gone, if they are called Otter Hounds

  10. Raw Tripe, and chips and burgers and milk from local take away once a week. Give them plenty of wormer and plenty of food and they wont loose weight. Flake maize is only a filler like spuds to us. No feeding in it.
  11. It was Isaac (Ikey) Bell while hunting hounds in the 1900's in Ireland (Kilkenny and Galway) and in England that invented the modern hound. He did this by continuously breeding hounds of a TYPE. He crossed a welsh hound into the old English TYPE. He did this for two reasons one was to make them look pretty, the second was to improve the old English confirmation. At that time they were cow hocked big bullocks of plain hounds. These old hounds would hunt steady away for hours. However Ikey Bell breed a new better built hound (Modern) that could run faster and further. It was this line that gave
  12. Maybe you are all right. Maybe the category should be renamed to HUNTING FOXES or something. I think that it is great to hear from a pack of hounds bred of a similar type, also is nice to hear of hunting with various crosses. I think at a time when hunting has been banned in the UK, it is at its second stage in Northern Ireland to been banned and is under extra pressure every day in the Republic. I dont think we need anti's if we all going to keep fighting like this. If you could bottle the passion in fights here it would be great to give to the local TD's or MP's. I hunt with many registered
  13. We hunt old English, harrier, old English cross harrier, a beagle and 2 welsh crosses. They all seem to work well as a pack.
  14. No offence taffy apple but just because it is working don't mean it shoud be £200. Its up to the lad what he wants to charge of course. But you will find a lot of lads will give dogs away that are all from workers. There are still decent lads out there who give dogs away and then hope one day to get something back. Surely to a good working home is better than having your wallet filled. On the other hand have to say there loving looking dogs, congrats on having them looking so well Good hunting Johnny85

  16. http://www.foxhuntva.com/web/index2.php?option=com_content&do_pdf=1&id=46 This may be a help it is from the USA but will help, ignore the &ndash thing. Hunt Staff Only refers to the Huntsman, Whips, Kennel Staff, Terriermen, fencers etc. Anyone who is paid a weekly wage. Masters are not paid. They pay in general. Some Masters will also be huntsmen. Hope this helps in some way
  17. I take August off and hunt everyday and most days twice a day with many packs. I often find that some of the hounds that fly on their very first day, give up by Christmas. Likewise some hounds slow to start turn out to be some of the best. You will always have no starts but thats animals for ya. We get alot of draft hounds either after the puppy show or fist week cubbing. 8 times out of 10 these will be good hounds. We hunt a pack of Harriers, Old English and small bit of Welsh blood. The harrier as footman says is a little wilder. This is great when you are not up with them, they can cast wid
  18. With most hounds, you should be whelping your bitches by the last day of the season, i.e around paddy's day. At 12-16 weeks they are sent out to walk for about 6 to 8 months. Here they learn about the countryside and developing there nose. Once back in from walk, they learn about exercise, couples and feeding. Then The following August when they are 17-18 months start them then. At this time you can go out at dawn with they dew. Ideally find a litter of cubs and scatter them. Hopefullt kill one or two and teach the pups and at the same time scatter the litter for the season. Teach the hounds w
  19. bang, are you saying that hounds that dont mark are no use not entirely, some hounds chase foxes as there job and they love it, some hounds hate foxes and want to kill foxes. in my eyes as a terrierman, these are the hounds i like and think should be bred off etc. most hounds that hate foxes and hunt for blood will mark. back in the day there were ways to make hounds mark that were very affective, but there still needs to be that blood lust there. agree with Don's last statement. not sure im correct on this but i think in recent years with more gun packs and more gun pack type a
  20. No offence lad and I accept your opinion, however thats a bit like any sports player. When Ali won his boxing match, or Ireland the six nation, or europe the Ryder. Sky sports only ever show the match and the winning. They dont show all the agony in shit weather training. What ever you do there is a shit side. If everything was easy it would be boring. Good Hunting Johnny

  22. Surely most men would love been a terrierman for a pack. During cubbing your out at dawn four days a week watching hounds at their craft while probably getting a dig or two in every morning. During the proper season you get to learn every earth in the country, where there are many foxes, get to know all the landowners, and always a fox at home when hounds mark. If not out with hounds in good weather you could walk for days to find a fox at home. Out with hounds they drive them to ground for you. And you always have a team of diggers to help you if a dirty spot.
