  1. This year I am putting up a board so all future shows can add there date.
  2. Over here if your registered it comes with insurance but i think it works out about €500. But I think if you get 10 or more people join the countryside alliance they will cover you. Its worth ringing them. About 40% of land we hunt the farmer asks us 3 questions. 1. Do we have Horses, 2. Do we have guns and 3. Who are we insured with or have we any. Its a most if hunting, I think. Good Hunting Johnny
  3. you should try call it same letter as the sire or dam so its easier to remember breeding. When we name hound pups we take first letter of sire and second letter of dam. For wxample sire: crumpet dam: albany so all the litter are called Cl's. or I know another long working terrieman calls all his dogs with a D
  4. Where u based lad. where u hoping to run show. I know there is a lot of lads runs shows that are not on this site?
  5. Why back leg?, All injections should be on the scruff/neck (whether under the skin or muscle) should they not? all the vets inject in the neck because closer to heart and can access the blood stream quicker, also in a terrier, it is as close as you can get to the infected area i.e. the nose. or am I wrong?
  6. Thanks a million for that CarraghsGem Rockview Harriers Working Terrier, Hound and Lurcher Show 2011 Sunday May 1st Sevenhouses Coursing Ground Danesfort Kilkenny Enquires: terrierwork@live.ie We will have all the same qualifiers as Ballywalter Game Fair on the same day (Supported by Albertj)
  7. We wash the hounds with it twice a year brilliant stuff. I use it if terriers get anything from their game. Use very wattered down on terriers. Do not use on open cuts. Always wear gloves and masks. Its very very harmful but it very very godd for any itch and fleas/ticks/mites. Talk to a local sheep farmer and get the end of a bottle off him. Its €50+ for a bottle. Good Hunting Johnny
  8. I know this is in the wrong section buy just wondering what way ye lads have your vehicles fitted out. i am buying a new style peugeot partner van and wondering what is best way to kit out the bach for dogs and what sort of cages/boxes you use? Good hunting Johnny85

  10. Thanks a million for all the comments lad. Its great to hear. As I have said before on here, we are always trying to improve so if any ideas give me a shout. This year I am putting up a big board, so all the other shows can come and put up there poster. As we are the first it costs a lot in advertising, but we dont mind. in return to support other shows, i'd welcome them all to come and hand out flyers at our show and put poster up on the EVENTS board. Hope to see you all on May 1st. I am in talks with Albertj, As his show is clashing. I think we will be having a qualifier for The big lurche
  11. If you contact the Hunting Assoc. of Ireland at hai.ie they will have contact details and will be able to help. Good Hunting Johnny
  12. Rockview Harriers Hound, Terrier and Lurcher Show 2011 Sunday May 1st Danesfort Kilkenny Ireland
  13. I take all the points on board and agree with most of them. The only thing I would say is its easy for the horsey crowd to ride all over us (excuse the pun) when we have no mandate. If we had a club we could get members on the HAI committee and then we would be in control as mush as them. As I said earlier, only my opinion. We need someone to defend our sport. No one knows even how many people work dogs in Ireland? Fionn. Countryside alliance for €60 insures pretty much everything legal inc. digging and shows. As a memeber pack of the Irish Foot Harriers Assoc we also have a pack insuran

I have met many through my young life. Some are totally headless, others are very clever people who are dangerous. I am not going to list the ones I have met for legal reasons. But I will list the TD's who have fought for us and the ones who fought against us, For Fieldsports Mattie McGrath Ind Phil Hogan FG John Paul Phelan FG Bobby Alyward FF Against Mary White Greens These are just the ones in my area. Mattie McGrath has done great work for hunting and coursing. He cam to a puppy show during the summer and the whole crowd clapped him in. Please support those who support us
  15. Good idea, perhaps the mods could pin a topic for show dates for each country. Ours is Sunday May 1st. Kilkenny Ireland. Everyone welcome
  16. I think the "terrier club in ireland" post has been deleted. If it has, to the Mods I am sorry in advance for bringing the subject back up. But I would like to suggest the objectives of a club in Ireland. This is just my opinion and only making a suggestion. To me the following should be the goals of a club: 1. Accept all like minded men/women who share the same respect for their dogs and game what ever that be. 2. That as a large group the could avail of group discounts in insurance, feed, equipment etc. 3. That the club would become affiliated to the HAI (Hunting Assoc of Ireland) or
  17. The problem with bloodhounds is they are too deep scenting. They can hunt clean boot up to 24 hours after man has gone. Foxhounds were developed to kill foxes and show entertainment at the same time. Thee would be no point hunting a line today of a fox who was there yesterday and is long gone now. Also they can be known to hunt anything. Great voice though. Good Hunting Johnny
  18. Ya 96 I think was the first year. The field in Faugheen is now a housing estate. Have to say we very happy with the venue we have now. Ya motorway is great. I did belfast city other week in two and half hours. Hopefuuly we will get a crowd. It would be great if the two shows didnt clash. We are tied into our date though. Thanks for the positive comments. Good Hunting Johnny85
  19. Thanks a million scent and wetdogsmell for the comments. I have e-mailed Albertj today with a mad suggestion. I was thinking that if he was running a two day game fair, maybe he might consider running the terrier and lurchers on the Saturday so that our show and his wont clash. Its only an idea. But it means that we could both promote each others show. We can only get our venue on the Sunday and he has his all already booked for the Saturday. Only an idea. It would be great if all shows could ruin with out too many clashes. God hunting Johnny85
  20. On the subject of books the book by Beckford is excellent book for anymam keeping hounds of any sort. Also a brilliant book on the skill of hunting a pack is a tiny very rare book by LORD HENRY BENTINCK. Hard to get but has been the result of so many foxes killed by huntsmen who study it. I know one huntsman who stil reads a couple of pages once a month or so. That particulkar man has killed over 70 foxes this year so far with his pack.
  21. dug a few vixens in cub they stunk as bad as any other fox at any other time of year Yes any fox will stink when been dug as the terrier has rattled them. But a vixen in a covert near the end of the season will hold very little scent. I am not saying i know all, but I have seen this so so many times
  22. I hope some of you can come support our show. It is in the same venue as always. We run this show for the foot pack we hunt. Its a great day out and working dogs is the only objective. We have a great team of lads who help us from Kilkenny and Waterford. We have been running it for almost 15 years no and have had no major problems. If anyone has any suggestions for this year please PM me or e-mail any of them. Good Hunting Johnny85
  23. Hounds/dogs cant be mouch good if they have to cut wire for them?
  24. A fox losses its scent when headed just as a vixen in cub has no smell at all. Its nature protecting them. Weather and type of land been hunted add up to alot to do with scent. However a lot has to do with the actual fox your hunting. On a days hunting you may find a fox and do little with it and blame scent, however you may find one a half hour later and scream on it. You will have great hunting when the scent is a little high. If you ever hear hounds on the line of a deer, people often say they screamed on it. The reason for this is actually the scent if a foot higher then a fox. So when ru
  25. so many books have been written on this subject and stil it can not be understood fully. If you can smell it hounds can not. Think that scent is like a piece a string if the weather is bad for scent then the string will raise up quickly, if good scenting day the string will stil low for ages and hounds will hunt well. In a windy it is hard for hounds to hear others and hear you. Scent can be great on some windy days Good Hunting. Let me know if you want some titls of books Johnny
