  1. Is WD40 the shooters choice of cleaners? NO. WD40 is not suitable for gun cleaning unless you really hate your airgun! It is a good solvent but it is approx. 85% kerosene (paraffin). WD40 was developed as a water displacement for electrical bits and pieces on cars and boat engines. It cannot clean powder residue and copper or lead fouling very well. It leaves a silicone film on your gun metal that will become sticky and build up in crevices. It can damage some plastics and can damage some wood finishes. Most importantly, it is not made to lubricate under high heat or pressure. It will also e
  2. Pretty lump of gear isn't it, but does it and can the shooter do the job? I used to shoot with a field target man. Beautiful gear but when the rain threatened he would scuttle off back to his car in case his £950 (yes I have written it down right) £950 rig got damp. He was also into GUGGI flage too. (My old raggy ghillie suit looked like what a tramp would throw away compared to his gear). His hood cost £35 alone! Must be nice to have money and yes he does drive a Volvo!
  3. Best bag I ever filled was three bunnies and a couple of woodies. I average 1-2 bodies per shoot but as it's only me, the wife and dog, our stew splits three ways quite nicely.
  4. I own a HW35 Carbine. Mine has a rekord trigger mechanism. lovely bit of kit, catches out a lot of people who use the old rifle as it releases with just 12oz of pressure. Why do you ask?

    VHD

Slow down chaps, Don't start dunking your feet in Dettol just yet. I got a call from a friend down South telling me about it. He read a shooting magazine article about it & no I don't know which one, and (this is so heresay) when he was talking to a local ferreter he was told about a warren (South East somewhere) that was dug up full of corpses with symptoms of VHD. So, being the inquisitive type he spoke to his vet. Voila! He was given a page about mixi and VHD (which pet rabbits can be vaccinated against) and that was emailed to me. Here is the link to the advisory he sent me. htt

    VHD

Ever come across a rabbit which is bleeding from it's nose, other orifices or looks like it has a foamy discharge from it's nose? Or, are you finding dead rabbits without the usual signs of mixi i.e. watery discharge from the eyes and swelling around head, ears and sometimes genitals, eyes maybe swollen shut?  If you have be careful! They may have caught Viral Hemorrhagic Disease (VHD). Not infectious to man (or so the experts say) VHD can decimate a warren within 2-3 days. The rabbit bleeds internally. Open one up and it is a mess. The meat is unfit for human c
  7. Dunno where you are my friend but my pal brought an ARS .22 pcp (Chinese import I think) in Skegness for £279. With my scope on top it shot a good 8mm 10 shot group at 25 yards. Not too shabby for a cheapy.
  8. I've just been shown how to purse netting using smoke pellets instead of ferrets to chase the rabbits out. Great fun, highly successful, cheap and easy to do. Smoke generated with plumbers pipe test smoke cartridges. Rabbits bolted from the warren in seconds and I didn't get bitten by an overexcited ferret. Anyone else tried it?
  9. try this article for traps http://wildwoodsurvival.com/survival/traps/index.html
  10. Tin of pellets, £4.00. Trap, £50.00 Where's the maths?
  11. A DEPRESSED alcoholic ex-miner died after he shot himself in the stomach with an air rifle. The Coroner Dr Robert Hunter is going to write to the Home Secretary to request a review of the laws relating to licences for air rifles. He apparently said: "I don't think people appreciate they can cause serious injuries." The consultant pathologist said that he died through shock and haemorrhage due to shooting himself and alcoholic cirrhosis of the liver, which affected the blood's ability to clot. Come to think about it, I'd be pretty upset if I was stupid enough to shoot myself too! So
  12. I went hunting in America a few years ago with a "bowman" and he was shooting woodchuck out to 50 yards (ish).(The woodchuck is a large, heavy bodied rodent ranging in weight from 5 to 10 pounds. The head and body range from 16 to 20 inches length.) I wondered if it legal to use a bow for hunting in the UK? I'm thinking rabbit!
  13. Yep, i do but I use an air rifle. Last snow here in Lincs was March and I upset the wife by disapearring for a couple of hours, still the rabbits I came in with tasted great.
  14. About 10 years ago I bought a Daystate Harrier .22, lovely bit of kit. OK, compared to todays lightweight offerings a bit of a beast but it will land a pellet on a pellet at 30 yards with monotonous accuracy. (The gun is good, any errors are all down to me!) Recently I changed my scope (Harriers don't use iron sights) and found myself in a quandry about mildots, MOA and shotfall. Problem was solved and lamping that night went superbly well. It did open my eyes to the amount of ballistic programs available as freeware on the Internet. The key word here is FREEWARE so you rich people with t
  15. I am not surprised by Mr Eric Begbee's comments. A few years ago I was looking at all the "shooting organisations" to get insurance and phoned up the BASC for advice. "Oh, You're an airgunner". I was told. I explained that I usually shot with a registered pest control firm and had been shooting vermin with airguns for the past 30 years. In today's litigation mad world I thought it prudent to get an independant insurance for casual shooting. They again came across as not interested as I was an airgunner. This phone call summed them up for me. They came across as an organisation for th
  16. Hi. As I shoot PCP, I got a monopod from ebay for the rifle because unlike the muscle brigade, I can't hold a rifle in the aim for long due to an old injury. It is useless for springers though and my HW35 bounces all over the shop. It cost £20 and took a lot of practice but works well. It also slides down section by section to just over 18" in length so it's good for sitting too.
  17. Hi. The thing about springers is their HATE of being supported by a solid object like a rest or even a bipod. Bean bags are ok and my dog's pillow works a treat BUT in the field, how many people have something stable to balance their particular "recoil proof" cushion on. I have tried bipods, monopods, fishing rod stands, and a wide range of stuffed toys but the best one I've found was when I was showed how to hold a rifle as the FT shooters do. As luck would have it, on UTUBE there is a quick tutorial which might help you and costs nought. the link is www.youtube.com/watch?v=9sa7ODrtWMY o
  18. Hi Ghillies Lamping last night was a storming success with kills out to 40ish yards. At the end, when the dawn had come up, we wiled away a couple of hours tin plinking at 20, 40 & yards. The chart worked a treat if a little coarse in mills but the MOA was consistant (tiredness creeping in) giving groups no more than 1 inch low at 40 yards. Mils gave good hits plus and minus 1 1/2 " so can't complain. Looks like I've got this sussed. Thanks for your input. Cheers for now
  19. Sorry Must remember to click the post button once !!!!!
  20. Yet again, thanks ghillie. Didn't have to be too complex though (Luckily enough). An afternoons worth of plinking (and very tired legs) and I was able to draw up a shot fall card for my Harrier after zeroing at 25 yards (Imperial rules OK) Filled in the shot fall as it happened, then added Mils (ish). Result, confidence boosted, lamping tonight. Thanks for your help
  21. Thanks Ghilles, it makes sense now. Everyone who knows me knows that I just don't get jokes or funnies, possibly due to a loose screw! The scope in question is 6X mag but I get the drift even though the "standard" is 10X I can follow the reasoning. All I have to do is sneak out to 40 yards and plant my stick. I'll let you know if theroy and reality actually work. Cheers for now.
  22. Don't forget the National Gamekeeper's Organisation. £30.00 pa. note that this insurance is only for leisure, if you shoot as a business or get paid to shoot then this one is not for you.
