Brittany's are great dogs, and as you have discovered they are head strong,my dog Jake is used for rough shooting, and retrieves rabbits and pigeons woodcock etc, sometimes to hand sometimes not,i find mine is not manic like a springer, but tends to stick his head in undergrowth and smell what's there,he is great on woodcock and pheasant. You do all the work and training and then become frustrated when it goes wrong in the field, but one day it just clicks into place and it feels great,Jake is a great companion in the field, and also in the pigeon hide. As you will have noticed brittanys have a gr

What do you keep your licences & permission slips
fatboy replied to halloween man's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
I always carry my phone out shooting,so i took a photo of my certificates,it clearly shows my name and my certificate number, the police can then check this on the national data base,The originals stay home nice and safe, there is no legal requirement to carry them, and they will very quickly find you on the data base. I once called out the police for my job, gave the attending officer my name and date of birth, and two minutes later he had all my details,we had a long conversation about decoying pigeons,as he was more of a shooting nut than me. -
Parabuteos lad Just looked at your dogs pedigree ,and his "grandad" Cliathan Oliver's Return is my dogs "dad",so that stubborn streak must be in the genes.

This is Berty Britt, otherwise known as Jake. I use him for rough shooting and when decoying pigeons,He is at his best on pheasants and woodcock. He was originally trained for hawking. I like the more methodical steady way Brittanys work the ground. But as you probably know they can be very head strong

what training for 4mth old labrador pup
fatboy replied to CarraghsGem's topic in Gundogs & Retrievers
Teach it to find £20 and £10 notes,at least you might make a few quid. did have a passing thought of teaching her to find hash at my local pub, im sure one of the lads there has a hidden stash! To teach her to find hash you would need to have some as a training aid,can you see where the problem might be NO.....its to find it not f*****g smoke it... :D So we are all clear, for the dog to sniff, not for you to....oh sod it why bother, you know what i mean -

He does point, very strong point with pheasant and woodcock, with other game it is more of a stop with paw slightly lifted,or just stopped and glancing at me,you get to read the body language. Mine will go into the rough, but unlike other spaniels does not pile in but works his way in using his nose to locate game but is very thorough and areas can be done at a surprising speed. He is a very good retriever, and and never ceases to amaze me by finding that pigeon that crashed into the woods, and if he can smell it he will not give up until he gets it,i thought he was injured when he failed to c

You could always get a Brittany Spaniel, and have the best of both worlds, with a pointer thrown in.

.22 bolt action and semi auto on same permission
fatboy replied to RAPID7LIAM's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
You will have a hard time making them change their mind,as you already have that calibre. Do you use night vision? if you do ,you could argue the semi for day time use,and the bolt as a dedicated nv set up,so you would not affect the accuracy of the rifles by adjusting them for day and night use, this would enable you to dispatch vermin precisely with minimal suffering. -
My old favourite,my master sxs And my Escort, despite what people say it cycles flawlessly

Just a thanks to every one for an interesting thread, some good information about everyone's breeds, and some cracking photos,i have a brittany spaniel,so was interested in the hpr side of things.

When you applied for your sgc certificate, you would have been allocated a number which would be put on your file/record,so even if you are refused it will still show the number on your details,as it will stay there.

I have a hatsan escort, people say the older ones had feed problems,i have the new model and it feeds everything i put through it,you can get a decent second hand around the £300-£350 mark,i use mine for ducks, pheasant, wooddies and rabbits, its a great all rounder,if you are using it for wildfowling,go for the synthetic stock, then its just a wipe down to get rid of all the mud.

Same here,he has a few champions in his pedigree.

Sorry craigyboy, but Jake no longer has the "tools"to be a dad, he has some pups out there to carry his pedigree on, but I weighed it all up and decided to take the cancer risk out, Sometimes I think I would like one of his pups, but there will only be one Jake, they broke the mould with him. It's always worth looking on the Brittany spaniels uk website, if you register you can see liniage of the dogs, you may find a suitable dog to cover your bitch.

now thats the kind of dog i wouldnt mind putting over mine credit to ya mate

This is Jake,he is just over two,and i would not swap him.I looked into all the gun dogs and decided a Brittany was for me,and i think i made the right choice. He would work until he drops, loves to be in the rough,he retrieves those rabbits 100m away as i lay there with the hmr in the sun,and will always find the pigeon that landed in the woods,he is a bit rough mouthed with the pigeons but i breast them anyway. He acts differently with the shotgun, stays in close, goes into stealth mode, compared to the rifle where he pushes out a bit. He can be pig headed and sometimes pretend he has not heard

Insurance Renewal - Who do I go with this year?
fatboy replied to dave1372's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
BASC all the way for me,when i had a problem,i rang them and they gave great advice, and talked to the police on my behalf, problem was sorted very efficiently. They may cost a couple of quid more, but i think it is worth every penny. And if you break it down to a monthly figure it's not that much, the cost of a big breakfast -
I bought one this week, cycles flawlessly, has already accounted for some pigeons, and a fox.I think a lot of it is shotgun snobbery, sure it's not going to be as good as a £1000 berreta, but it's going to do the job. I love mine and think it's going to be a "keeper". My Hatsan Escort

British Army Fragmentation Vest with Kevlar inserts
fatboy replied to No-more-rabbits's topic in Gun's and Rifle's
Just because it is a flak jacket, does not mean it will stop shotguns ,it has trauma plates but can you guarantee they are trauma free(never been used)A shotgun can do a hell of a lot of damage, take a 12 bore and shoot a 4pint carton of milk from 25 yds, then see if you still think it will stop shotguns -
This has been talked about on a recent thread,it is all down to the area you are in,Dyfed Powys grant .17hmr for fox. From the last thread the boys in Leicester do not get it for fox,it is down to each force. I agree .223 is great for fox,but the .17hmr is very capable of despatching fox.
