  1. Hello Foxgun Tom This is a link to a thread a while back where someone asked basically the same question when I was adertiseing some young Harris's, there is a bit of info in the link but its won't beat the hands on aproach when you learn the basics. Take Care Tony PS, Click the link below a few posts down from the top post . http://thehuntinglife.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=3738
  2. **ALL THE BEST FOR CHRISTMAS EVERYONE! HOPE YOU ALL HAVE A GOOD ONE AND NEW YEAR.**
  3. Many Thanks all for the replies! I'm not so upset as gutted and distraught knowing that it was human error that the dogs was allowed to kill it in the first place, I spoke to WAF on the phone tonight and I think he is right in saying the pup started the ball rolling which switched on the other two for a rag, its something I'll have to be a big boy about as alot of you mentioned and brush myself down and move forward, the only thing thats done me is the kids screaming at me while I ran amock to do the job with the shotgun! I'm just glad I never did it infront of them and completley did their he
  4. Many thanks for that. The dog and the bitch are about 3-4 years old and I have left them out with the bird without a problem in the past, we kept a red pup back this year which is now 7 months old, it had a few attempts in the earley days at the birds but I hoped I had knocked it out of it, one of the dogs had killed a Rat in the garden a few days ago but the young pup seemed to be very possesive with it compared to the other's! do you think because its now killed something its blood lust was up? its a nightmare in this house at the moment with the kids in total shock after I totally lost
  5. Today is another bad day in my Falconry calendar, perhaps one of the darkest! I attended my sons cristmas play at 2pm with my wife who forgot to shut the out house door with the terriers in, I came home and could hear barking and bells and growling in the garden only to find 2 off the terriers tugging at the Gos on the bow, he was a long time dead by this time but them b*****ds new what they had done and shot for cover all over the garden, in my temper I pulled the shotgun out of the cabinet with one thing on my mind, it needed to be done with all three of them but with 2 kids and my wife scre

    jaspers gos

Hello Millet As you can see the lad who brought this bird chose to Imprint it which to be Honest is a easy way of flying a Gos, it was also his first Gos but Imprinting it made life far easier for him! the downfall is as you can see is the bird mantling over kills and also screaming which he mentioned and flying it to the lure! some get quieter as the seasons go on but alot don't . If you live close to neighbours this can sometimes cause hassle as some will scream through out the day until flown or even after. Its a good move starting with a P/R Redtail, you'll learn all the bas

    jaspers gos

Hello Hybrid just got some pic's through from the lad you was talking about who had the gos up scotland, its a finnish x german bird I bred last year and doing really well by the sounds of it, Its 2 1/2 oz's bigger than this so called finnish bird I brought off Andy Hollinshead this year which is supposed to be pure finnish , Hollinshead will need to be diveing for cover when I finally meet up with him the scum bag :realmad:. This is what the lad wrote to me about this finn x german male and a couple of pic's Cheers Tony
  9. They're supposed to be going abroad Darren, the last excuse is he is still waiting for the paperwork to come through , these Harris's are 23 weeks old and still in with their parents! she has now started to get a bit pissed off with them in her aviary space, the sooner he picks them up the better.. Tony
  10. He got a Top deal there for his money Tony,i bet he's well pleased, was he taking it up straight away.I had the guy over with the big finnish female imprint again,it still couldn't come to terms with the wild pheasants,i think once theyv'e had lots of shoot poults and reared birds ,they can't handle the zip of the wild game, said he was coming back this sunday afternoon, but he hasn't called yet . speak soon mate, W A F....... <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Hello WAF sounds like most of the gos men mate, they talk well on the lists but duck and dive for cover with excuses w
  11. He's doing Ok darren apart from taking a good Hammering off the larger Rabbits! the day the lads from Lancashire turned up to pick their Gos up we went out in the morning! had a few slips with their Gos's and had a few bunnies, I took mine up at about 1.30, he nailed a Rabbits over a ledge and disapeered! I looked all over the place thinking he had buggered off chaseing, it turned out he was a good arms length down the rabbit hold bent backwards after attaching himself to the arse of the bunny, he's a persistent little fella, Hoods well and has a cracking nice temperament, but he's not the bir
  12. sold the male I bred yesterday! he had been sitting on the bow for about 5 weeks waiting for a spanish guy to pick him up, but to cut a long story short I got fed up waiting for him and sold it to a lad from Lancashire yesterday, I stuck him on the scales after going a good day without food to show the lads how big he is and he tipped the scales at 2lb 2oz , he was a cracking finnish male and made the male I'm flying look like a female sparrowhawk, as you can Imagine the lad who brought it was made up with the bird he got for £700. Tony
  13. You'll get nothing but first class advice when it comes to goshawks of him turk . i tell you what tony,i know pics can be deceptive, but he doesn't look that small in the pic on yer glove,i had big regan over yesterday afternoon with his female fin imprint, lovely gos,but a pain in the arse when the wire when near it,twittering and baiting, but it did chase everything hard she put up for it other than the 2 hares :ph34r:it had hard luck on the mallard twice, it took hold of one in a long fast climbing flight, lost its grip and it managed top get back to the brook,it also had hold of another that
  14. The finnish males have definitley got the edge over their larger sisters over the the first 50yds or so, they also turn quick and get up off the deck quicker, they take cock birds and bunnies well but may strugle with footing with big cock birds at the beggining of the season until their technique Improves, Pardon the Pun but I like where hawks are concerened "big boys and little girls", I have big finnish female birds hear for breeding but I would never want to fly one! Give me a female flying a tad over 2lb - 2lb 5 and it would be dynamite for everything you want, If its Hares you want a sm
  15. Personally mate I won't fly a Imprint! people do well with them but I prefer a P/R bird mainly down to its manners plus the P/R birds know exactly what they are! basically Imprints are totally f****d in the head , if you think about it a Imprint Imprinted by Humans either thinks that its a human or you're a Goshawk! in my mind when you take it out and reduce its weight and fly it its like its being flown by something of its own species, this is the reason some will show aggresion just like they would with another hawk while feeding! which is basically why some falconers in the early days tryin
  16. Its a hard one when I'm flying a Gos, I could and have given it long slips on Rabbits but you can pretty much guarantee they'll make it to cover, the next thing you know the Gos has flown into the nearest tree spotted a bunny running for cover in the woods and nailed it, this would'nt be much of a problem with a Harris but the Gos will soon learn that it can kill easier out of trees than off the fist which is the start of the bird self Hunting, a self Hunting Gos will take things on at some pretty long ranges and if it fails to catch that one it would more than likely spot something else anoth
  17. Just a quick few pic's of my Little male Gos on his second Rabbit, I would normally use a Gos for the game in the area but this year the whole game season on the land has been spoilt, I'm fed up covering miles on foot without a slip! the land owner has opened up his land to the public , on every peice of land he has left the headland green to allow people to walk round, there's also a DEFRA post knocked in each corner giving directions, the whole place is now moving with people and dogs, it seems unreal but the keeper has told me from the syndicate that he put down around 8000 Pheasants but th

    Eyelets

Hello Bobo If you go to any shop selling sailing and yatching equipment you'll get some, the sail eyelets are the one's with the backing rings! you'll be able to buy them complete with a Hammer tool for a decent price. Cheers Tony
  19. Hi All Just picked this up from another British Falconers club website: Dear all, Unfortunately I am the bringer of sad news. As of 12.00pm today Friday 28 October 2005, a DEFRA spokesman has confirmed that ALL falconry field meets are banned. The press release issued yesterday confirming the decision to ban birds from markets, shows and fairs, now includes falconry field meets. It is however, still legal to continue hawking on an individual basis. Please see the DEFRA website (www.defra.gov.uk) for further information. Regards, John. John Callaghan Directo
  20. Nice one mate! What I normally do is bring in a toy boy to keep her occupied each time I go out flying! it also saves me a job later at bedtime . Cheers Tony
  21. For starters a good falconry course could well set you back £200-400 unless you know somone who can teach you and spend some time with handling birds and flying birds, a good starter books would also be of benefit which will put you through stages of building weatherings and perhaps aviary building and basic equipment, a falconry course should certainly do that too! always do your homework set up a weathering and get your equipment in advance of getting a bird, equipment won't set you back any more than say £150 for things like a: bow perch/Glove/leashes/Bells/anklets/jesses/swivel/ and perh

  23. Hello Sauer I sold a Harris to some lads in East Kilbride this year, I don't know if this is very close to you or not? but if they are I'll contact them and see if its alright to give you their number and email address, I have sold a few birds up in scotland but for the life of me I hav'nt got a clue where they live now . Cheers Tony Ps, I know Hybrid on this site lives in scotland too, perhaps he might be able to help

Thanks for that Hybred and terrierpitbull . The male I kept back for myself this year was coming on fine until it swallowed a lead pellet, its now recovering from mild lead poisening and doing fine again after a few weeks of worrieing weather it was going to die or not, thankfully it cast the pellet but the toxicity had to still get out of its system, I'm tempted to take him up again due to how big he is but like a pratt I did something stupid in the panic should this one die. In the panic I shot out and brought another Gos thinking the worse about this bird, its another male and supp
