How young is too young to start on rabbits ?
Phil Lloyd replied to whitefeet4190's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
To encourage a young dog to get up and over, especially with a see-through type of barrier, I tend to throw my coat over .. I only do this a few times; I find it gives a pup, something to aim for,.. and improves his confidence no end.... -
Long time ago fellah,....I've met so many folk over the years in the hunting field, that its difficult to remember? But, I do seem to recall that the guy's name was John... He was a nice fellah with good , honest rabbiting dogs. I had journeyed to Devises to mate my ACD/Greyhound bitch Speckle to an exceptionally useful Red Merle Collie x Greyhound , name of Sam. His owner was Kevin Davies of Calne and the John guy, was his ferreting/lamping partner... Both genuine, capable hunting men,...I liked them...?

? Nostalgia is nice, but it doesn't pay the bills...? Most of the lads I see today, are using the Orange 'Treckie' style locator.. I've never actually tried one,.but IF I was still at the rabbiting game, I do believe that I would have to get my act together.? Adaptability is the essential ingredient of the successful hunter, you have to move with the times,...or like the Dinosaur, you will become,..extinct.. http://www.chalkwarren.co.uk/ -
Hi Foxdropper,..that was a mornings ferreting, amidst the Vale of the White Horse. I was working alongside a pal employed, by the Rabbit Clearance Society (there were loads of these groups throughout the UK) and his job was to look after several farms, in his area. All the farmers grouped together, to provide a wage and supply a vehicle, to enable him to get onto the massive chalk warrens. I remember the Fox bolting into the net...? I don't think it was the ferrets that moved him, but more so the frenetic bumping and rumbling, around the deep bury, by the rabbits. Wha

?You are right Ginger,..I can barely use the poxy phone, let alone get it to take snaps...? I've got an ancient Nikon camera, and bought an antique lens off a Hunting LIfe member... The lens is over 19 years old, so like me, it ain't no spring chicken, I think it's a good old thing, but truth is, I ain't up to the job,... it's always pretty hit and miss with me... I just can't seem to grasp, the basic fundamentals of photography,...I don't have the necessary savvy or concentration span, to learn from my mistakes.? It is what it is, eh.. -
Sorted...? http://www.chalkwarren.co.uk/

As you so rightly say,...the more diminutive types of lurcher, often suit the frequently, close combat style of rabbiting, that a hedgerow hunter requires... Nowadays, I tend work the dogs exclusively, amidst such places. Obviously, it is great to take up the generous offers of a weekend away, and to try my luck on the Dales, the Moors and the Fells,...but sure as eggs is eggs,..ya still have to come back home...? http://www.chalkwarren.co.uk/ -

Like your base gravy JohnBoy..? When you have such animals available, you have a unique choice....you can either stay put and enjoy working, a rough and ready Moucher's cur,..OR,.if you fancy a wee bit more excitement and devilment,...you can always go in search of the best hare killers and deer catchers in the UK and utilize their superb genes... It is a great position to be in... Personally,..due to my own situation, locally,..plus my semi-retired existence, I like to tone things down a tad and breed in lurchers, with a strong whippet influence.. Well done, for sticking with your breeding program John....ya always gotta go,... with your heart..? Merry Xmas to you and yours...? -
No, he is a Pompey Boy...?

You are lucky not to have received, a rap on the knuckles,.. for slyly peeking,.. at your Xmas pressie? Yes, the Kelpie is Taz,... a cracking animal that passed on his steady temperament and physical toughness, to his progeny.. Whenever I got one of my Kelpie moments, I would take a walk out with the dog and his owner; doing so, always seemed to sate my appetite, for owning a purebred animal.. Unfortunately,..that primitive urge is always with me, it never goes away, and I know that someday, I will probably succumb....? http://www.chalkwarren.co.uk/
