Sensible attitude brother... I work on a similar principle,... I like my dogs to be adaptable,..they are part of a team and need to fit into, any given situation. Not all dogs will wear this type of Hippy lifestyle,..they just don't have the required temperament to handle loads of noise and crazy upheaval. Such sensitive animals probably feel much safer, if kenneled. In fact, if they are owned by a heavy-handed sort of man, the type of guy who cannot hold his temper, then the dogs are far better off, out of the way. I much prefer working dogs, to run free in the

We have used this line, down here in the South, for a couple of seasons now. They have been really useful, working equally well on the vast, deep chalk downland warrens and also amongst the woodland and hedgerow buries. Can't really fault this exceptional family of ferrets...

? As a youth,... I took things personally....when dealing with dogs, this is both foolish and illogical. My Father schooled Sheepdogs and Cattle dogs, and same as a lot of men from his generation, he was a hard man with a jukel.? Accordingly, I followed suit,... I was notorious for being a spiteful, quick-tempered silly cu*nt...? Nowadays, I am chilled with a lurcher,... I make each new pup my best pal... We have fun, we enjoy great sport and craic,..which is possibly what it is all about. I try to keep things, calm and collected,... I never, ever,..lose my temper w

COLLIE X GREYHOUNDS...ENDANGERED SPECIES...
Phil Lloyd replied to japs eye's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Although they come out, fairly level, my dogs are possibly what the purest lurcherman /breeder might politely term, scatterbred' ... ? Basically,.they are a mixture of Whippet, Sheepdog and Greyhound blood... They are no great shakes and created on purpose, to assist me,..in my localized rabbiting activities...? -
Love them ole coursing dogs...

COLLIE X GREYHOUNDS...ENDANGERED SPECIES...
Phil Lloyd replied to japs eye's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Hi, I breed this smaller type of collie lurcher, just for hedgerow ferreting, general mouching, and a wee bit of picking up on the local Shoots. My only quarry is the rabbit, so a dog that is a genuine seeker, marker and good at hunting up in the rough. is all I really need. I still rate, a well made F1 Collie x Greyhound Hybrid, but these wee 'un's suit me fine.?- 305 replies

COLLIE X GREYHOUNDS...ENDANGERED SPECIES...
Phil Lloyd replied to japs eye's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
I think you are right there Roybo... I shall always keep my own home-bred, watered down Collie hybrids, they suit me for the ground I hunt over, but most lads coming into the game today seem to want a far more athletic style of running dog...The genuine F1 hybrid twixt a sheepdog and a Greyhound would still suit me, but I feel I am in the minority... Facts are, if such an easily produced hybrid was required, on masse, by the lurcher fraternity,..there would be no shortage of them... The situation speaks for itself really...? Wee Maggie, a pup I sent down to North Devon...- 305 replies

Hi,..no photos ... When I stayed in that area, there were no rabbits, just a few hares on the hills, plus Badgers, Foxes, etc.. I did go back in the late 1980s and found a few pockets of rabbits to catch on the lamp,..but compared to other places in the UK,..that area was not very rabbity. Doubt I will ever return to Wales,..all my folks are gone...

That is a lovely picture of the Red Beddy,..he really does look beautiful. Personally,..we always used related dogs when breeding our lurchers, mostly because it was easier to use the Boy/girl next door than to travel all over the UK... I was once a village Boy and nobody I knew had a car...and to us, the Fens, the Moors and the Dales, were as remote as another country. So, we played safe,..rarely improved on our cur dogs and were blissfully happy in our ignorance. When I could get about, I used dogs from all over, bred loads,..won a few, and definitely lost a few...?

? What about folk like me, who have spent their working lifetime treating all sorts of Pests, from Fleas to Foxes,..and who now choose to specialize in treating wasps nests throughout the warm Summer months...and Moles and Rabbits during the Winter time,....are we not to be considered, genuine Pesters ?

? I know men that are extremely experienced with the bull blooded lurchers,...and they are also, pretty ruthless in their selection of stock to be included within a breeding program,...but I think they give a sapling a wee bit of a fair go, before making any permanent decisions... I have found with all types of running dog composites, that you cannot beat a genuine, 100% early starter,..such an animal fills you with confidence and lets you know, that god willing, the future will be bright...everything is gonna be, ok...? Sadly, ...Mother Nature can often play tricks on ya and a seemingly, seco

Don't know much about the various breed prefixes, but I do like whippets, in all their many shapes and sizes. I've had a few over the years, (fecked most of them up), but, they would have had it no other way,...they live to hunt rabbits...same as me...

Back in the day,...I worked with an old rabbit catcher. We traveled all along the South coast and snared and ferreted hundreds of rabbits... We slept in the old Bedford van and parked up in the farmyards.. Ferreting alongside public footpaths, we encountered plenty of folks, from dog walkers to ramblers,... I don't remember anyone showing anything other, than a deep-seated interest in our activities. If they wanted to stand and watch rabbits hitting the nets, we did not mind, just as long as they were quiet. Sometimes we would be carrying bundles of shushis back to the t

I think we have all strayed from the fold,..the sheer excitement and thrill of the spotlight's glare, ignited in a fire in the hearts of most hunting men... It gave us all,..another way to work our dogs. ..it was great,..it was safe,...the night belonged to us... No,..I've never regretted, walking by night, but nowadays, I much prefer to see the dawn come up. and take in the fabulous sights of rural Britain...?
