? Thought-provoking queries ...that is what I like to hear... I'm no authority on the breed,..but what l I can say, is that Australian Cattle Dogs, exhibit several wild dog traits, that are different from other types, that I have kept. They are naturally suspicious of strangers, even when brought up in a family environment.... This is a completely different behaviour pattern, to that, exhibited by specialist-bred guard/protection type breeds. My own Cattle dog hybrids were no problem, once you had introduced them to new folk, and strange dogs... Once you were in thei

Sensible words fellah... I've relatives in both Australia and New Zealand and knowing my interest in Herding dogs, they have always forwarded information, back home. It is a long story, and hopefully, one to be told (at a later date?) but in the 1980s, before I bred my Cattle Dog lurchers,...my main priority was in importing some Kelpie blood. Unfortunately, I got kinda sidetracked.....things happened...? Anyway, its no matter,...however,..I do recall Australian sheep shearers that I've chatted with, telling me, that in many outback areas,..the dingo, is quite rightly hated wi

Best wishes for the bitch, and her impending litter, ...not long now... You will soon be rocking and rolling, with your own F1...?

Just for Pastoral fans out there,..these are some words I penned from research, a few years ago... Obviously, only my opinion,...based solely on my own experience...? The Australian Cattle Dog The evolution of this unique, purpose-bred worker has been well documented, and although one can never be 100% certain of every fact, I believe that much of the historical information appears to be reasonably accurate. When the first pioneering settlers started to colonise Australia and to produce large herds of cattle that grazed on the vast unfenced properties and bushlands, they soon

You are spot on there, Aussie Whip? I've used, all sorts of lurchers, for all sorts of quarry? However, back in the late 80s,...I went full-time, on the rabbit catching job. I found that an amalgam, of running dog and herding dog, seemed to fit in nicely, with the daily workload...

Interesting subject... All, the various herding breeds/types,..have been bred (and ruthlessly culled)...to create a canine to fulfil, a specific task. In common with most early canines,..if a dog did not work,..it did not survive...? A few folks today, still maintain, those same criteria... It is only when man, conveniently forgets, just what a particular dog, was originally created for, that the rot sets in...?

How encouraging and heartwarming it is, to see fellow hunting men, get together, for a truly good cause Well done to you all..?.

Fair play to you for sticking to your guns,.... and going with your heart...? I prefer, my rabbiting lurchers to have a fair old smidgeon of the herder in them... Everyone, has their own preferred types, hybrids and line-bred lurchers,....that is how it should be... Plenty enough room, out there,.. for us all...?

Thank you so much, lads...your kind words of encouragement have been so helpful. We have been inundated with phone calls and messages, from all over the place,..and some calls have come, via the most unexpected quarters? It just goes to show, that folk are not always, quite as black, as they are painted...? All the best to you guys,... Rosy and I would like to wish you all, a safe and exciting hunting season... Kind regards, Phil.?- 24 replies

Good advice Nicepix I spent a lifetime, without ANY permission, and like many others, I paid the price,..several times...? In my experience, gaining the right to have a wander frequently depends on who you know, kinda thing... A good way to get a foot in the door, is through beating, on a pheasant or partridge shoot... This intro might take a while, but, if you show yourself to be a genuine guy, ..keepers and farmers are then far easier, to approach.?
