ive got permission on a local stables to do a bit of rabbiting and ive been taking my young bull x lurcher down and catching a few bunnies. but they have also got a problem with rats at the moment, theyve laid down rat poison but it doesnt seen to be working and the owner has asked me to use my lurcher to kill them. but i need a few tips as ive never been ratting before. 1. how do i locate a rats nest? what do they look like and where is the likley hood of them being located? 2. will my lurcher actually kill them? 3. is there anything i need to do to prepare the dog? cheers all advice

update from one out of my litter
adskibullus replied to labsnlurchers's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
lab x dogs are used for pig hunting aswell, they are hard as feck when it comes to confrontation of quarry. the following is a quote from an experienced pig hunter "pitt lab mix is the best breed i've ever seen work a boar. they are smart agile and can run for years. i've seen them with there guts hagging out and still had the hog caught!" they use the bull terrier for agression, gundog for nose and and size and greyhound for speed and stamina. im not sure about that. its pointer that they use not lab and the best hog workers are the bull arabs which are many crosses but not labs. -

i dont want to start an argument either but i agree with wilf. over breeding or irresponsible breeding is a major problem in the uk. surley if you want a good working dog it would make more sense to use two proven parents with years of experience of working behind them. if you get it wrong then the dogs will end up shit and instead of working they join the endless list of rescue dogs in kennels around the country. whats the point? -
quality dog pal. i bet it was a foxes worst nightmare pre ban

ive seen a mastiff cross greyhound take down a medium sized horse so surley it would probably stand a good chance on a deer. but also ive herd of these stag hounds in australia which will take deer, wild boar, rabbits, dingos and also catch wild goats by dragging them around by there ears. and apparently staghounds are greyhounds x deerhounds.

If you don't know the humane method of dispatching a rabbit then you shouldn't have gone out with your dog intentionally hunting them, I mean seriously, smash them in the head with wood?????????? Ask someone to show you a quick and humane method so that next time your dog brings one back it doesn't suffer unneccersarily......... to be honest i never went out intentionally to hunt i was only on a walk, ive got a mastiff cross hes to big to catch a cold never mind a rabbit. i didnt realy get him to hunt i got him because he looks good. but he likes to chase rabbits only ever realy catche

i was out this moring with bout 6ish with the dog chasing a few bunnies about and he managed to catch his first one. admitidly it bolted from cover right infront of him and he happened to be in the right place at the right time but when he caught it he wouldnt kill it! he droped it infront of me then every time it moved the dog would just give it a little nibble the drop it again until it moved and would just keep doing the samething again and again. the dog and rabbit were both in a bush so i couldnt grab it and finish it myself. eventualy he killed it but the rabbit was in such a state it

bully looking lurchers, pitbull crosses etc etc
adskibullus replied to lucky's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
are bull x's realy a new designer breed rather than a serius hunting hound? i have a mastiff cross and even though hes quick i think that hes more of a man stopper and large game hunter rather than a rabbit killer. i have done alot of research on this type of cross tho and through history bull breeds have been crossed with greyhounds as hunting and guarding dogs. mastiff x's were used to run along with horse drawn carrages to protect then from highway men. the mastiff x and pitbull x and ebt crosses have been used in australia as hog dogs for 30 odd years very succesfully. and used as coyote -
awesome dogs [bANNED TEXT] what cross are they? nice one

yer hes a first cross his sire was a big bullmastiff, weight about 11 stone andd the dame was a greyhound. i dont think that he was bred for hunting cos the guy i got him off of still keeps in touch and all he wants to know is how big he is. i think that he was bred as more of an athletic guard dog. and a good guard he is aswell. -

need help on working my mastiff x greyhound
adskibullus replied to adskibullus's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
how do you train them not to bite horses. i know some woman who tryed stock training with her mastiff x, she tied it up to the fence and let one of her smaller horses kick it and hoped that it would be scared. but the dog wasnt all it did was make it more aggressive to the horses and one day it broke free and ripped the horses neck open. apparently they were wacking the dog with a stick and it was just hanging there untill the horse came down to its knees and the horse died. obviously i dont want that to happen to my girlfriends horse! ive got another question aswell my local common is full of
