So I've seen a lot of different crosses of dog here and was wondering what you all feel is the better way to go? a running dog bred over working bitch or vice versa? if a fella was to breed say collie bull and grey would it be better to breed the collie to the bull and then breed tha to the grey or breed to the grey first and then add the third? just a curiousity thing, it'll be a long long while before I try my hand at breeding dogs but coming from fowl I know there's preferred methods for crossing especially when adding oriental blood like an asil.

there always trying to ban something. in my home state there's a cell of these nutjobs down in the cities trying to ban greyhound racing down there. problem is they do occassionally get something passed like they did in new mexico and louisiana. michigan proposed a ban on dove hunting can't recall off the top of my head if that one went through. chicago was working on banning racing pigeons. the list goes on.....

they're right, getting them to let ya have the first is the hardest, after that its smooth sailing, lol. i've not got my own dogs yet, but i had this same battle when trying to convince my folks to let me get into gamecocks. first ones i got lucky i found them cheap and convinced my folks i was gonna hold them for a few months then turn around and sell them for a profit (which of course i didn't) then the next ones were "for an experiment in genetics and color" still got that line too. the more info i showed them on the birds and the more they helped me out with them during chores the more the

probably related to one another no doubt. they were owned by a family who all hunt dogs, three brothers and their father so they've got a few dogs to say the least.

makes sense what you all are saying. i've seen those agility course dogs vs. a working farm dog and its like day and night. i remember back when i was very young one of our farm dogs had some of the coyote hound blood in him and hands down he had to have been the smartest cattle dog we had. thinkin back to his markings he may have had border collie in him.

What part of Nebraska are you in? I'm south central. northeastern, up in antelope county.

New Mexico eh? I guess that makes sense, seems they got a lot of coyotes down there. don't know if I'd move down there though there's big chunks of land up here in Nebraska and up in South Dakota but ya gotta know the folks who own them. If ya go out the the sandhills of Nebraska they've got huge plots of land, ranches that are in the hundreds of thousands of acres.

makes sense, the few collies i've seen on the farms and ranches here are hard working. most guys here use the aussie shepherds or blue heelers though. are there particular types of collie that are better than others, or does it come down the the individual animal?

thanks steve. yep they all bare a resemblance across the globe. sadly seems not many folks here running these types anymore. more and more i'm hearing of folks using scenthounds (black & tans, walkers, plotts) for coyote. i partially blame the city folk coming in and buying up big tracts of land and making it private. you can't afford to have your dogs run across their grounds when they are actually there. they'll get ya for sure.

I know some of you probably already read my introduction, but I thought I'd post these pics anyway. These dogs are what got me interested in coursing dogs. They belong to my father's cousin. I've no idea what they're made up of, other than a lot of greyhound blood. We use them to hunt coyotes. Its been many years since I've actually been out hunting with them, and rarely see that side of the family so I haven't much chance to ask about them.

So here's a question from a rather naive American. what is it about collies that makes them favorable for breeding lurchers? what do the bring into the mix that makes an excellent hound?

Hello to the other members of this site. I was directed here by a member of another forum after he saw some dog pics I posted there. They were of my father's cousin's coyote hounds. They are similar to lurchers. He invited me here to check the site out, see what I thought, so I figured I'd come over and see what I can learn bout hunting with hounds as someday I'd like to get a couple of coyote hounds to run myself.
