  4. when i helped out on an estate the headkeeper carried some wool in his pocket if he saw any dog loose he would shoot it stuff wool in its mouth and say it was a stock worrying he also made underkeepers do same when i refused we parted company his veiw was the only good lurcher was a dead lurcher he was a ruthless man of the old school that im glad to say is slowly being replaced by the new generation keepers that understand the usefullness of lurchers

  9. thats a nice looking dog hows it bred mate saluki x ?
  10. will any of these super dogs your talking about be in lamping competition test nature versus nurture .as for general attitude towards working dogs for most they are objects of status ,currency or passing whim rather than a partnership with a good strong bond its a culmination of all things that make a good dog not one or the other and ill let you all in on a little secret the perfect dog doesnt exist .some people will never have a good dog as long as they have a hole in there arse not because of the dogs they buy but because of their own shortcomings most couldnt train a fish to swim but hey j
  11. I canny believe how far people go to train a lurcher When they are too young to chase quarry, all you want to train them is to take simple commands, jump and retrieve a ball. Once they can go into the field then you can teach them all the other good things which usually means the early work like retrieve, stay, etc goes out the window anyway lol. im talkin bout a pup of around 10 months running out to a dummy with cats eyes sewn onto it( thats not going to run away) to retrieve it, i do this in an area where i know there is no quarry like my local playing feilds and is treated as a game
  12. it does work mate ive used them i used car body filler to make an eye at back of them to sew onto rabbit skin only trouble is sometimes when you throw dummy it lands without eyes visible but hey nothing perfect .works wonders to start pups on lamp without having to worry about them getting overmatched by the real thing
  13. interested to hear if there is any shows in durham or northeast area coming up
  14. useful looking team there mate
  15. your right i havnt because i cant see them bringing anything to a lurcher that i cant get from a more accessible breed from this country to be honest
  16. the beardie in my 3/4 grey beardie bitch was brought down from the isle of skye by d. plummer. so definatly working lines. not being funny but why does that mean its definatly from working lines, because plummer says so or because it came from isle of skye.even if true that must have been some time ago and doubt if that line is responsible for the crosses seen at present .like i said the vast majority of beardies used today are show dogs its a hard pill to swallow but true
  17. ive nothing against hancock it wasnt a sarcastic comment when i said legend because he truly is that and more but cant help thinking that its more quantity than quality if it werent for the name would he sell as many dogs
  18. the ibizian hounds, portugese podengos and pharoah hounds all pretty similar in the manner that they hunt their quarry which is to give tounge mute dogs are considered useless cant see that being a desirable trait in a lurcher
  19. the main thing that puts me off the beardie collie crosses is the lack of working lines of this pastoral breed as it became unpopular as a working dog, and the show fraternity doing what they do best, which is to render working breeds almost useless, but thats another thread all in itself. theres a fair few people breeding this cross but there cant be that many proper working beardies around to use so common sense tells you they must be using show or below average standard beardies that have no working background which is not going to produce a good lurcher imo .but would be interested to hear
  20. if you live on the fens you want a dog with at least a bit of saluki in it
  21. having helped at the conception of my dog i think i am qualified to say what is in its makeup . anyone who has seen more than a handful of first cross litters will know the variation that can appear from almost full collie to full grey with the more balanced offspring being the most popular choice wasteage in first cross litters being the reason why they are not that common with the 3/4 bred dogs more popular as they usually have better speed but with no apparent loss of intelligence and only slight drop in stamina
  22. heres mine first x 26 ats does everything i ask of him no bull
  23. if i knew what a woopa was i might take offence
