can whippets only be worked on easy ground
jakeuk1 replied to JPTfellterrier's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
i must say, people who have had whippets rave about how good they are yet the people who have never had one critasice them Dont get me wrong they have faults..... They can catch the odd hare but their not coursing dogs, They can catch the odd fox but their not the best foxing dogs, But they have a better acceleration than any lurcher, but not the stamina of a saluki x if you want a little dog for a bit of ferreting and lamping rabbits you cant go far wrong. they are easy to train retreiving, recall etc and calm around the house I can only give the my opinion based on the two whippe -

Excellent point artic, i wouldnt use a salukix where i live cos the ground i hunt (small fields in cheshire + derbyshire) requires a dog to get up to his quarry quickly before the game reaches cover so a whippet is ideal for me, its horses for courses! the two whippets ive owned have been more than capable of a full nites work on the lamp. -
Borzoi x greyhound totally aloof!!!!

Why are people arguing about peoples opinions? I think starting a dog at 12 months is the best advise for beginners i.e a newbie with his/her first pup, if you have worked your dogs since the dawn of time, and find that a younger pup runs better with an older dog, fine. But as the post was aimed at newcomers without an older experienced dog, i think the advise was sensible.

I nearly ruined a dog by working him too young, he was 6 months old and it was my first lurcher. (i was about 15 at the time and a bit too keen!) After a few nites with him running but catching nothing, he started pulling up and eventually lost interest in rabbits. round my way is full of small fields where a dog needs to be quick to catch. I wished i had waited till he was fully mature. It wasnt till he was about 2 years old and after after a long break from working he started picking them up.

Hadn't thought of that. I have read that flat coats can be "slow to mature". Are working golden retrievers more slender than show trains like working labs tend to be compared to show labs? its finding a working strain retreiver....as for the flat coat i know a guy who has some close to me mike addison horrible w a n k stain of a bloke!!! i wouldnt kennel one for fun!!! useless aggrssive hard mouthed and thats just the begining lol..... they were the most popular retreiver in europe during the 1920's theres a reason theyre almost extinct now!!! for a peg dog look no further than a goo

that sounds like a good plan but theres no way i could afford 1500 quid on anything so ill just have to save up for a more reasonably priced pup and although it would be nice to get one pre-trained dog im quite looking forward to watching the dog progress I would advise you to train your own dog, It wont be perfect, but i get my satisfaction from working dogs that i have trained myself, you will have to learn (just as much as the dog!) it will be a challenge! you will bond with the dog better and get to fine tune your dog to your requirements. So what if the dogs not perfect? he will be

Have you considered a working strain golden retriever? very biddable and easy to train as a peg dog

Just finished my 17th regs course, Tails are ok if double insulated anything from the board outwards should really be protected by an RCD/RCBO unless protected as mentioned. Most consumer units being produced are split load rcd to compl with these regs. A bit of trunking does no harm tho!

An electric collar would ruin a sensitive saluki especially at her age. Ive seen my friend try this technique (against my wishes ) with an adult salukix dog, the dog screamed in pain and ran off, he was found (the next day) and the dog was never the same, when my mate tried to put a collar/lead on him he just rolled over and pissed himself. As already mentioned in other posts the electric collar only works well if a negative reaction is needed to deter the dog from something. e.g livestock, snakes, other dogs The pup is still young, even the best dogs go through a rocky patch! try an

Well i have just returned from my first trip after wildfowl, on a wash near Welney. after dragging my body out of bed at 4:30 driving down to the wash, stumbling to take position in the darkness, waiting in the freezing cold. What the feck am I doing here? i thought.......and im sure my spaniel was thinking the same! After a while I heard strange noises filling the sky, the lads i was with were shooting into the sky, i couldnt see anything and those i did see were too quick for my slow reactions!!! I fired a couple of shots and hit nothing!!! But i dont regret the trip, infact i cant
