  1. try taking out another dog that retrieves to hand. Tie your dog so he cant join in the fun. make a load off fuss when the other dog retrieves for you plenty of treats etc. Might find your dog will learn from this and not wanting to be left out will start to retrieve. Funny story but i used to have a spaniel that was mad for fetching from water and a terrier bitch that hated getting wet. I took the terrier out for walks when training the spaniel, The terrier sat and watched the spaniel jump off a bank into the river, swim out and retrieve. Watched the fuss he was getting and decided to not be
  2. mixi comes around here all the time, we are constantly being infected. Last summer one of the farms i hunt was nearly wiped out. It had only just recovered from a really bad eppisode 5 years ago that wiped out rabbits as far away as 30 miles from where i live. One farmer even addmitted he had a vet come to his farm and put down mixi due to crop dammage, " i had to do something" he said to me. Trouble is it spread like wildfire along the railway lines etc, everyone around here started selling all thier kit, dogs ferrets the lot. The terriers have never caught so many rabbits, they where dying
  3. I cut he net into 2x50 yard long nets both with 100% bagging. Thought better to have to much than not enough. Yes it does gather crap off the deck but i think the rabbit will have a tough job getting under it or out of it for that matter. I havent counted the mesh for depth but net was about 5ft high when loose on the floor, slightly stretched that is.
  4. just had delivered some sheet netting 200 yards long and 5ft high. Am going to use 900mm hazels. Can i use the left over height for bagging so i can use the full length of the net? Seems a bit of an overkill using 200yards for a 100 yard net when all this mesh is available any one had experience with vertical bagging?
  5. i think everyone forgotten what kept this country alive during the war. Hunting is part and parcel of being a human being, we are hunter gatherers after all. All my sons have been taught to fish and hunt, and to basicaly look after them selves if the need ever arises. lets face it todays modern hunter roams the great plains of tesco, and has everything put in plastic wrappers so they dont get thier hands dirty. Maybee we should look back at everything else mankind has f---ed up whilst trying to change nature im sure Austrailia is a big enough example. What about the Mink, the damage that has c
  6. you can cut any rod down a little, just means whipping the eyes back on so the weight on the line is eavenly distibuted. I start with the tip and temp stick on the eyes with tape to get the right bend, then whip them on propper. might need a slightly larger eye for the ip depending on the width of the blank, can sand it down a little, super glue then whipp. On other ocasions i have just moved the rod handle up the blank a little, but means splitting the handle and unsticking the reel seat, quite tricky.
  7. Fish monger s gone from there now. but mullet still like that little wall by there. never fished upriver for them, tend to stay down by the trader out of the way. Some good Bass showing up of the quay now and then had a 6lb er there last year on a spinner
  8. Just did a search on google for free boat plans. was a while ago so dont remember the exact url.I think the john boat plans came free but had no dimensions on them, hence being free. So i scailed it with a ruler to the size i wanted. The next project is a tourning canoe, plans from jem watercraft.com . DK touring Canoe 18 ft, but am going to scale it down to 16ft.
  9. £150.00 ish, but paint was extra. Put floor paint on it and was big mistake, should have just used exterior gloss. Would have been far cheaper and might have dried properly. lol. Made a mistake also the engine i put on it was 2.5HP not 4. Does about 7knotts one up, down to 5 with two on board.
  10. Done a little research on this, and quess what? Yes you can, and make it from plywood from the Builders Merchant. The guys from the states build them for Bass fishing etc, I thought cant be that tuff, will give it a bash. 3 sheets of WPBP, 1 x 5/8" 2 x 3/8", a tube of Bostic waterproof glue. I thought about the design, and what would best suit the water i was attempting to cover. Shallow waters, Esturies etc, just something big enough to cast a fly or a spinner out of. Decision made; a ten foot John Boat or Skiff with a flat bottom, just the ticket, easy launching, lightweight
  11. did you check out youtube for the video? some good fishing on there. I am currently writing articles for my own web site this one is part of the collection. Web site will be up soon and will cover sea game and coarse fishing. and will be very much like this site with members able to take part and create a fishing comunity so to speak.
  12. hows that for a mullet, got my son well into it
  13. there has always been heaps of mullet here, just no one ever bothered fishing for them, have had 6lb bass out of the river quite often but the schoolies are a pain in the rag:)
  14. Mullet Mayhem I have fished the river Cleddau here in west Wales all my life, chasing the Sea trout or Sewin as it is known locally, along with the Salmon and Brown Trout in the upper reaches. Bass are common through the summer months and occasionally some good fish come to the local anglers who know their ground. The river is tidal and the estuary merges with the fresh water just in the middle of Haverfordwest. Large numbers of Grey Mullet frequent this tidal stretch as well as pushing up river throughout the summer months feeding on the algae and microscopic snails present on the ri
  15. I think this is a sea run brown trout, in our river trout never get much bigger than 1lb ish, these fish come with the sewin and are pink inside. Over the last few years i have had a couple of these and put it down to a sea trout stocking programme that took place on our river some 4-5 years back. Then again what is a seatrout, a trout that has returned to the sea to feed and returns to fresh water to spawn. I certainly classed it as a seatrout, the fishes tail gave it away, its shape and the light line clearly visable near the end of the tail fin.
  16. just purchased sheet netting from here 200yards 4z £28+ tenner postage http://www.jbsnets.co.uk/shop/index.php?&a...58a81dba77b3df3 double knotted and double selvage, 5ft in height when stretched, will let you know how it goes am eagerly waiting
  17. Nice fish, the pic does make it look like a big Brown Trout though. Here's my best of the season 5.5lb caught after midnight. cracker, fresh too. bet she wnt like the clappers. is that a floater your using? i have added another pic maybee this one is more seatroutish

  19. nice fish, but i think the small ones are better eating. muddlers have had me a few fish but now i fish only one fly. My own patten and it seems to out fish most of the other guys on the stretch i fish. So i keep it to myself as you can imagine lol only had 13 fish this year so far there has been too much rain for the fly but i live in hope it clears a little so i can get back out and cast [bANNED TEXT] the end of the season tight lines
  20. dont blame you for wanting to come back. not so many fish around like the old days, but still a few if you know where to look. Good run of fish up the rivers this year, big diffrence from last year and the year [bANNED TEXT]. Bass are scarce but mullet have been plentyfull, check out youtube, pemsangler is my name, mullet is the game lol as well as rabbits pigeon salmon sewin hehe. tight lines
  21. thanks, is a sea trout you wouldent think so by that gold flash down its flank, was silver when it came out of the river.
  22. sea trout fishing in the dark is a wonderful experience, but the fish can be tricky to catch sometimes, think they got to be in the mood, weather conditions etc, worth the wait though :
  23. could send you a pic of my fly patten, i keep it a secret around here, the sewin are few and far between, and i have more than most on this fly. is result of many years trial and error, might not work on another river
  24. dunno about the rest of you but i find that rabbits that know where they are, ie know their way home are fast of the mark espcially those that live in warrens. Rabbits that are away from home living rough in the trash are always a little slower, sometimes just running in circles trying to figure out which way to run under pressure from the dog. This has become noticable when dropping ferreted rabbits for the young dogs to run. Drop them in the field where they where caught and most get away. Take them two fields away and most all get caught.
