It's a possibility, something we'd have to chat to Mr B about. My biggest concern is that we split the forum into sections that only a few people visit? There's nothing more off putting, for me anyway, than a load of sections which overwhelm the viewer with tonnes of things to visit. If we look at that other shooting site it has many different sections catering to many different tastes. Some visited lots. Some not so. Ironically it's their General section that has the most viewers and contributors. A bit like our set up. At least with our threads everything is available under one

Too many rifles in circulation for it to be totally effective. When they announced the Brocock ban, gun shops were inundated with calls, from law abiding people, trying to offload old air rifles. This was purely down to the poor wording of the law and the journalists paraphrasing it, in the media. Any announcement of a ban will see the law abiding hand over their guns, like crazy. Will it stop the swan/cat/fox shooters? Personally I think licensing would be a good idea. Especially on the lines of the SGC. It's not ideal but neither are toy shops selling air rifles to anyone with cash,

Presume all dead rats have traces of poison in them. Secondary poisoning in something the size of a ferret can be drastic and possibly fatal. Brian Plummer said lots of things.

As the moderator here, you won't be banned for posting tuning details. The posts will be removed and I'll ask you, nicely, not to do it again. If you did it again, you'd be warned, then suspended and then banned, for every time you did it, in that order. I've got nothing against the BBS lads coming on here and saying their piece. If you lot want to hash it out in an environment that will allow such debate then here's an open invitation from our forum to your forum. However, I will say to our lads... If you don't mind, would you keep the personal abuse down to comedic rather than anyt

I can believe that. The air gun manufacturers have been told to get their house in order or else the government will sort it for them. Some will see that move as a sell out other will see it as a bid to clean up the sport. I believe licensing would solve the problem and could remove the sub 12 power limit which would remove the need for constantly worrying about power and pellets. If something isn't done soon I can see a ban on air rifles being implemented.

Depends on how you define the way forward. If you're trying to learn/teach marksmanship then a pcp will hit the same hole over and over again but it won't help you manage recoil. If you take two shooters. Put one with a springer and one with a PCP, for say 6 months, the PCP will be far more accurate. But if you get them to swap after 6 months the guy that shot springer first will be a better marksman. Personally I want to be the best I can be. Because I'm in the business of killing things and I want to do that quickly and humanely. So I learned how to shoot rather than how to just fire a rifle

Yeah you should be able to. I've checked the settings and there's no reason why you shouldn't be able to vote in it.

I can't say I've used an XL9, on a proper pest control shoot, but I have used one and I wasn't able to find any discernible difference to make it worth the £1100 asking price. I have used an HW100 on a proper pest control shoot (3000 pellets through it in under 3 weeks) and I found it the best rifle I've ever handled. At half the money, of the XL9, it really is no contest to someone like me. I make a living, with pest control, and I want something that will perform over what something looks like. I've paid for that rifle many times over and while it now looks like a bag of shit it still p

Thanks Sean. Looks like Weihrauch will sleep soundly for a while longer!

Certainly won't be the last question either....

To reply to the original post. It's news to me too. It all boils down to personal preference. All calibres have their advantages and disadvantages and it comes down to what you're used to and after in an air rifle. Shot placement over calibre any time. If you can't hit it it's going to laugh at you.

How long is a piece of string? How much would you be prepared to spend on a set up? Values of 2nd hand Rapids vary considerably to their condition. The Mk1 is still sort after and can fetch close to it's new price in certain quarters so you can pay a considerable amount. A bargain would set you back a couple of hundred quid. Mk1's are very popular with home tuners so take a chronograph with you. What would you sell your HW97K for? Buyer beware.

Seems to be working fine here, Grim. I was able to enter the votes and submit it. What seems to be the problem?
-
Looking forward to your findings Sean. I'm sure I'm not alone!

S410 for all round usability. 707's work much better in FAC than they do in sub 12ft/lbs.
-
What sort of power are you looking at getting from your rifles, over there? The barrel length is negligible on 12 ft/lbs rifles but will come more into play the more power being put through the rifle. I'm sure many will debate the best power output for that particular rifle but 16ft/lbs seems to be the most consistent and barrel length doesn't seem to come into play. Unless there is some monster tuning done overseas I can't see any problem with either choice and it will probably come down to a coin flip!
-
Shinsung do a .50calibre air rifle that's capable of 195ft/lbs. You won't find one in Britain though! Just to echo what's already been said. Anything over 12ft/lbs and you'll need an FAC. If you want more power, and more range, then you'll have to go through that procedure. Or you could work on your fieldcraft...

Nice one Sean! Looking really good mate!

I know the Soviet 5.45 x 39mm round was designed specifically to fragment to cause soft tissue damage, that much has been determined from paperwork that's been de-classified after the collapse of Communism. If they based it on the NATO round then surely they must share similar characteristics? Thing is why did they change from 7.62 to 5.56 in the first place?
-
That's how I'd been schooled too. A dead soldier lies on the ground, collected when everything has finished. A wounded soldier screams in agony, demoralising his comrades and requiring two men to carry him away from the battle field. Doesn't the 5.56 round tumble as a product of it's design, when fired from assault rifles?

Barrel length is more of an issue if you're hunting in more confined spaces... like a wooded area or somewhere with ground obstructions. A shorter carbine barrel is easier to manoeuvre and less likely to get knocked on anything. Also you'll acquire your target faster when you're moving the rifle to your line of sight. As for length and accuracy it's trying to find a way to explain it without going into technical physics. Basically the rifle barrel, of a decent air gun, has a spiral groove for it's entire length, from breech to the end of the muzzle. This spiral spins the pellet and sta

Good for you. I'm glad it worked out for you.

Catty hunting isn't illegal. I've never read anything that legally defines a blow gun though... Doesn't mention it in the 81 Act.

Hunting with crossbows was banned under the 81 Wildlife and Countryside Act. The full reasoning is with the ministers that drafted it. It will never be repealed.
