  1. I use a 7amp/hour battery on the 170 but it has a dimmer fitted as well and that will give me about 3 hours of work at night. Get a LED lamp that fits around your head for walking to the shot fox that will save the battery. Also while your in the car you can be charging the battery at the same time as lamping from the car/4x4
  2. I'm going to the range on Sunday with about 7 different types and brands of ammo to try out off the bench - 5 shot groups. As all the rounds are copper can you just change ammo/brand without "shooting in" between a change over of ammo so to speak??? Just to see what groups the best. At the moment it looks to be Rem UMC 50g JHP and Hornaday 53gr HP match that group the best in my CZ Varmint 223 with a 1 in 9 twist.
  3. I have at last found a way to get a cheap caller made up with easy to get bits. It worked well with any input from MP3 player, CD player, phone. http://boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055320088
  4. The only thing I can add is to know the land your shooting on. It's easy said but at night it's not to easy to see that backdrop. WE ALL MISS. Oh yes and get the lightforce no other will do as good.
  5. As far as I can work it out.... A bore sighter will give you a lazor dot on paper as if looking down the bore of a gun. The scope cross hair will then have to be moved to that red dot. BUT it will not allow for the drop of the bullet over the range that the paper target is at, you would have to dial that in from a ballistics drop chart. Or do what I do and centre the cross hairs of the scope, mount the scope, dial in the scope height from the bore, dial in the bullet drop and let off a round. I have just put a scope on my new CZ 223 and was only 4" low and 1" right @100m for the first shot
  6. I have tried all types of HV rounds and found that the grouping was never good enough. I was told that the HV rounds drop out super sonic flight at around 50-60m and it induces a wobble in the bullet. Since trying out HV I've gone back to using sub-sonic rounds and 12mm groups @50m.
  7. I've been down that route of a cheap scope mounted lamp with the Cluson shootalite kit #2 @£90 but ended up paying extra for a bigger bulb @75watts, 30mm mount and it's still not as good as the 170. Money down the drain for me.
  8. I woke this morning with my finger on a warm TRIGGER What an Aphrodisiac everything was UP before me this moring.
  9. Just got my hands on my CZ Varmint 223 today and this is what I'm doing:- 1. Clean out the factory greese. I used Hoppes #9 powder solvent (thats all I had here to use) and dipped a bronze brush in it and scrubed out the bore. Then plenty of wet patches, they came out with plently of sh!te on them. Repeted that a couple of times and then dry patched until patches were clean. Took the gun off the stock and gave it a good oil and clean all over with Brunox spray oil. 2 Now I'll do the shoot 1 - clean. Shoot 1 - clean and so on as above. It may use a box of ammo and take some time
  10. This is where insurance comes into play to compensate the owner. BUT it could NEVER compensate the owner for all the time put into the breading of an animal.
  11. Another night out and that gives me someting good to read about, you tell a good story John. I was out with my son last week and we saw 6 foxes on a new route that we took but didn't get any shots at them so we will be going again soon. It must be a good year for the fox as there seems to be plenty of them about, plenty of food in the spring and summer for the new cubs.
  12. Another one down good shooting John. You seem to be getting them all in the same location or there-abouts. Got my first deer on Saturday last - a nice doe, over in Kerry with a friend using his 6.5x.5.5. The big cut up to-night so venison roast for Sunday.
  13. I had great pleasure today in being able to accompany my good friend Dwighet on a stalk, my first ever stalk. I set off from home at 4.00am to meet at 5.00am and arrive at his shoot before first light at 6.45am. The older novice, myself, and the young master now set out into the light forest and up a mountain as a light drizzle started to fall, already my old legs where aching by just looking at the climb before me, the last time I was up any mountain it was in a car. I had got all my gear together last night and had bought a new ski jacket for today. Good value from TK-Max @€ in camouflag
  14. Try WD 40 to soften it up a LOT and if needed use a green pad BUT A NON SCRATCH one
  15. Here's a good online ballistics program Balistics program Fill in the details as best you can for instance a 223 bullet will have a balistic coefficient of 242. weight of say 55g and muzzel velocity of abot 3200 Think thats right????
  16. I was talking to a well known gunsmith and he told me to use WD 40 to remove the protective residue from the barrel bore then throw the WD 40 away as it is the only time that WD 40 should be out near a gun. After using WD 40 oil the bore well. I did a search for "cosmoline" and an answer to it's removal was with very hot water or steam to melt it out.
  17. From Jonty "I only decopper the barrel every 50 rounds or so (usually every 50 foxes or so!!!!)". IF ONLY Thanks Snap Shot, Jonty amd Bunny Shooter.
  18. I'm getting a new CZ 223 varmint - just waiting for the license to issue. What will I use to remove the residue from the NEW barrel that CZ put in from the factory??? I have in my gun locker some:- a small bottle of Hoppes #9 powder solvent, some Brunox Turbo-Spray, a can of Forest Bore Foam, a can of 3 in 1 oil, and of course a can of WD40. Which can I use? Also I'm going to shoot in the barrel at the range while I get a zero by shoot 1 and clean do that 5 times and then after every 3 rounds for another few rounds and then I'm OK to go. How many rounds can I shoot before I need to clea
  19. Hi Ex. Hunter How do you find the Cluson shootalite that's in the photo to use for lamping. I have got one but have yet to realy used it in the field so to speak. I only got word Monday that my 223 license is approved and gone off for issue. My son uses a Lihgtforce 170 and when I look at the shootalite output against it, it just doesn't put out half as much light. I got a 75 watt bulb for the shootalite so that might brighten things up a lot. And good shooting on those rabbits
  20. John I thought you were older and wiser that to rise to the bait from 'the cheater' Never mind about going over the pond come on down to KK for a week end but even though I have over 400 arces to shoot on it must be the only 400 acres without a sign of wild life to shoot.
  21. Thanks John I'm quite choked up here just thinking about "I actualy have my 223 license". I feared the worst as you know and then the time to go through the courts. No 22lr for those foxes now. IT'S NOT APRIL 1st is it
  22. YES TO MY 223 LICENSE I just had to SHOUT this out for all to hear. Just got word from the Supers secretary that my license has already gone up to Dublin and I should have it back in a week or so. AND it only took 3 months. I must be one of the first to be granted a 223 license, or anything bigger, here in Kilkenny City for many, many years. Well my thanks to the new Kilkenny Super
  23. Only no word. I made an appontment to see the Super last Friday with his secretary so may know this week. Not looking forward to it as I'm not good at putting my point of view across well. And now I can't find my mobile phone to get the appointment time when she calls thats more grief. I was out last Thursday on my own with the 22lr walking in the fields. Stopped to look over a gate for about 5-10 minutes and turned to see a good fox behind me in a thicket about 40y away. He was 6 feet into the field and did not see me at all. I crouched down slowly, I had a good thicket and tree b
  24. Good going John. How are you getting to like the remington 223 now, a few months back you were thinking of trading it away.
  25. Get a scope with a bigger objective front lens. You will then have a bigger exit pupil view. I use the nighteater 8-32x60 on my CZ 22lr it get in plenty of light.
