  5. is that terriers hpr or gundogs? reason i ask is i do the same with gundogs ( a lite meal before work and the main after) but when i had terriers i fed at night ,my reasoning gundogs are on the go all day and need a steady release of energy but terriers work in generally shorter burst ,unless on a long dig
  6. years ago when i used to live in the midlands thats what we did on the severn ,trent, teme etc
  7. your not on your own vfr im using broodies and so far this is my results this year , im doing pretty crap this year, just had my 3rd hatch and not good again ! sat on 10 eggs, 6 hatched and only 2 surviving after 24hrs ! last hatch sat on 11 only 3 hatched and the first hatch sat on 13 and 6 hatched and only 3 alive now ! fertility been ok but seems a few struggling to get out of shell or not starting to chip or keeling over in the first day maybe its just the year ,fertility is fine with me and these are all from different pens of birds !!!!!! i though i would be finished now but
  8. with the above post in mind by fdr and eley ,how are people doing with hatches/survival generally ? im doing pretty crap this year, just had my 3rd hatch and not good again ! sat on 10 eggs, 6 hatched and only 2 surviving after 24hrs ! ,last hatch sat on 11 only 3 hatched and the first hatch sat on 13,6 hatched and only 3 alive now ! fertility been ok but seems a few struggling to get out of shell or not starting to chip or keeling over in the first day
  9. did you have the decency to let him finish first ,?
  10. just a question from someone almost in the same position ! if the knots have been pulled tight it seems almost impossible to unpick them to me ,its quicker to start again ! or am i being heavy handed when pulling knots up?
  11. what size needle do you experienced guys use on 1" rings ?
  12. well just had a go and second time almost lucky " aint pretty but works fine " first attempt had to scrap it at 9 rows, on row 7 i flunked 2 knots and it was easier to start again ,it took an age and somehow a couple of meshes are slightly out where i started tapering back down and struggled a bit attaching the last ring, got to admit i enjoyed it (a bit like tying flys) recon it will take a while to get up to speed though but going to stick at it for the same reasons as i tie flys and reload my own ammo "i just enjoy catching with something i made myself" think i need to get a smaller need
  13. and ? im about to have a go myself soon !
  14. got to be a walking stick on his head cm maybe even 2
  15. fair old bag there jd ! what sort of sized area were they from?
  16. 200 kelsae ! do you show them jok ?ive got 24 potted on here ready to put out whenever and the remnants still in the modules just in case ,im just growing to eat them ourselves !
  17. neither are or have been any of mine close to trialling dogs just plain simple gun dogs or stalking dogs , used to do a job efficiently and effectively, imho the dog, given the chance will let you know when its ready to learn the next lesson ,providing its given the opportunity ! nearly all my dogs bar the terriers had that handler/dog bond where we both knew what was wanted and when, without any shouting or thundering whistles and this is i think, down to what your saying about training a dog yourself and spending unrushed time with them .horses for courses i suppose but im firmly of the opin
  18. out of likes lab so heres one ! what you say about time and effort etc ,times are changing though ! dont you think everyone wants things in general much quicker nower days and no patience to wait .yes they do need correcting at times but ive seen a few dogs ruined with collars in the past
  19. your explaining it well enough for me skycat "mind my mastery of the english language leaves something to be desired at times "
  20. or the experience !!!!! greed again though
  21. i agree 100% skycat,im not a professional gun dog trainer but i have owned and trained my own gun dogs and terriers ,i personally find its best all round if you persevere with building the bond required to get the necessary results rather than using force ! its only my opinion but i feel if force is needed its down to the handler/trainer rather than the dog ,saying that ive got a gwp now and a couple of times ive thought about a collar for him lol, but when i stepped back i could see it wasnt the solution for us and it was me that was lacking !,professional trainers do try to work to time limi
