  1. This time of year, young silly foxes usually come running in when they hear the sqeak, JD's advise is spot on (although I leave my lamp on when squeaking), the only thing I would add is make sure that your facing the wind, sounds to me like your fox caught wind of you, thats why it stopped coming. Had you previously walked where the fox was coming? It might have picked up your scent this way. Keep trying, you'll soon get the hang of it! Edited to add: I also use a red or amber filter on my lamp. All these helped me catch many before the ban!
  2. What size is the Lurcher print??
  3. The answer lies in what you have said mate, dont over-do the training when the dog is young. For me, I get the basic commands out of the way early on and then shall we say "top them up" every now and again, but don't over-do it otherwise the dog will lose interest, after all they aren't robots!
  4. DH has got to play a part in there somewhere
  5. At last a decent thread! Nice to see you posting again Mr V I always have a young lurcher out with me all of the time from an early age, mainly on a lead just watching. Basic commands are a must, recall, retrieve etc. also from an early age but not too much so as to bore the dog. I encourage them to jump as soon as they are old/developed enough (mesh at the bottom of pen door etc) The first time lamping I tend to keep them on a lead, again watching. On the next time they might get one or 2 easy slips, and gradually build them up over a period of time, as and when they're ready, som

Was out with the terriers the other night and caught a really young rabbit in cover too , the first young rabbit was caught not long into January on the same bit of land!! That is some breeding season Its just madness this year

  8. Spot on there Frank! My dog Pedro has a fair bit of whippet in him, he has been an outstanding dog for me, I use him mainly with the terriers and IMO he is hard to beat at this, hes not that bad on the lamp either, has had a few day ferreting in his time and even could run a hare or 2 in his younger days a couple of times he would run the hare for what seemed ages, often dissapearing from view for a few minutes, make the catch and bring the f****r back!!! He has all the attributes you list Frank but also has the bonus of not being a cold arse, having a decent coat and doesn't have paper-l

  10. I have a clulite, with the lamp wired straight to the battery, cutting out the cigar plug and the fuse. Could the same not be done to the Lightforce??? Mine has lasted me 2 seasons now with more than average use, the only thing I have had to replace is the low beam bulb......

  13. You could have been describing my own dogs there phil!! I, like yourself spend most of my days trawling the hedges, rough cover etc. My only piece of advise to you Gun Smoke would be to think about what you expect of your lurcher, if you are simply wanting to flush the odd rabbit then a whippet or whippet cross would be fine, but if you like me and expect your dog to take whatever your terrier bolts, I personally would go for something a little bigger and to be honest if you buy from proven stock and enter the dog correctly then most medium size lurchers will do the job. I have a 24 i

    PROBLEM

Personally I like to see my dog keep shaking long after old red has stopped breathing, but Foxdog, your dog is only 18 months old and fairly inexperienced, one lesson in life I have learned is never give up on a dog too early!!! Give it time, if it's made of the right stuff, the more it catches (especially the fully grown ones) the better it will get and more crazy about them it will get or it will just jack!!! At least you know either way!! With regular work it shouldn't take long for the penny to drop, give it time mate All the best with the dog, I hope he works out for you!

  21. I was sitting thinking about my favourite TV series of all time whilst watching it the other night and thinking that nothing comes even close to it in my book, so I thought I would put the question to you all!! When you do get the time to watch a bit of TV what do you enjoy the most?..... For me it has to be Last of the Summer Wine, Bill Owen was/still is a legend in my eyes, never have I heard of a more comical character than "Compo" a character you could only ever imagine being played by Bill ! What little time I do get to watch TV this has to be my all time favourite, I don't remember
