  1. THATS OK THEN AS I DIG SIX DAYS A WEEK. I THINK ITS SOMEONE THAT RUNS AROUND DIGGING HOLES WHEN THEY DONT NEED TO
  2. ON THE BACK OFTHE SHOUT OUT THREAD THAT HAS BEEN RESURECTED. could someone define what the definition of this insult is. it is thrown about this section often. and to me is probably the worse insult to level at a terrier enthusiast. so WHAT WOULD YOU FOLKS DEFINE A MESSER. to me its the dog dealer/ puppy peddler. terrier this year lurchers next. folk that lie about there dogs breeding/ability. SO LETS GET A CLEAR DEFINITION OF THE WORD. ??????
  3. why would what i breed for affect your stock as your being blunt. why dont you concern yourself with what you value and i will do likewise. but consider this times are changing i'm sure we have and as our idea's are so far apart there is no point in going over it add nausium. i'll leave with this thought. there are many types of running dogs. many types of gundogs and have you thought that what you breed for are culls in other kennels needing different qualiities. it would take me a week with stay till diug. to get round what i could do in a day with a good bolter. and 50 times t

  5. good question stig. i reckon you cant train a good earthdog to come off. ive seen a few in all the years i used to work terriers. one or two of them just didnt take to the job and either jibbed or semi jibbed (culls) one was a freek. cowan/brightmore bred terrier that killed below but would call out with ease unless engaging his fox. (we bred a bitch from this dog that would stay but not engage and was mute. she would just sit with the fox till dug. ) the best ive seen have been scatter bred russells. the bright sort that have the submissive trainability of a collie these again i feel are
  6. posts like this would be sound if they said before them. IN MY OPINION. as that is all that is an opinion. ive seen a few dogs that can be called out. i owned one for many seasons. she was a little yapper that could be shouted out. and was very handy indeed. i worked with a lakie that was hard enough to kill the majority of its foxes and did this with ease, he could be dug to and was dug on many occasions . he took a lot of damage over the years due to his hard nature. but he could be held off the lead at an occupied earth untill sent down by comand . he could also be called off on comand.
  7. i agree the bolter / shoutout is inferior as a digging dog. but as a dog to bolt foxes they cant be bettered. in my eyes the are a different animal with a different work style.
  8. cracking wee bitch there are a few similar up this way. bred for work. proper lakies
  9. an accident waiting to happen. good luck with rehoming your dog. although i tend to agree with the above post

  11. well i have to agree with bosuns post spot on. i was guilty of buying the exchange and mart just to vue the classified section. i even bought a couple of duffers out of it
  12. years and years ago i came across a fox that was meeting the terriers mid tube. i had initially used my old russell she was hammered and came away defeated. and worse for wear. so i entered another terrier a shout out sort to try and bolt it. and as was the case with the first terrier you heard the fox engage mid tube. we used this bitch to buy some time till a big strong lakie could be brought down to this earth.the lakie owner pointed out that the bitch keeping the fierry fox busy wasnt up to much as it could be called out. (totally missing the fact that the bitch gave his dog the chance to
  13. so what happens if your terrier is in so deep that he cannot hear you calling him , in these physical impossible to dig places as you put it ? so what happens if your terrier is in so deep that he cannot hear you calling him , in these physical impossible to dig places as you put it ? then you have the same situation you would have with your mute bull headed cruncher. only chances are it has a little more savy and lasts till the 13 tonner arrives via the fell and moorland. rescue. fcuk me there is some nonesense on here. why are other canine owners not as kennel blind. if you want a dog
  14. as has been said its a funny old game. i new a fell that after its first season killed every fox it could get to. it done this for eight seasons often to ground for many hours. often worked sore. allways got regular work, never put a foot wrong . this dog could be shouted out. with ease. yet i never saw him come away unless he had killed below. i wouldnt say that is lacking heart. and only a fool wouldnt take stock from a dog like this.and to think he was nearly culled as his owner thought he was walking off his job. only when his owner dug down to the original marks did he realise that it wa
  15. same way you break any terrier. get it out after its jabs lead train it and get it in amongst sheep cows horses and whatever you need it to be broke to. give it a long lead and tell it NO. if it shows interest be firm... but no need to hit a pup. if it persists again say no firmly combined with a sharp jerk on the leash. repeat as often as nessesary. once it starts to gets the idea get it in amongst as much stock as possible as often as possible. in around farmsteads and out in the fields you can run these sessions alongside obedience training. this is what i do and it works fine. you can star
  16. some very good working terriers up here carry mr cowans lines. RIP.
  17. Really don't get the whippets break easily? Ask anyone what rhyl tip is like to run any dog my whippet does fine. the first whippet i saw run got caught on a single stand after sailing over a rylock fence. was opened like a kipper. this dog was also uncomfortable in rain and wind. the next ran through a hawthorn hedge same result. . the ground i work isnt suitable . the weather here can be serious even for a dog with a good hyde. i like them as working dogs but need a hardier dog. if that means slower then so be it . my presant lurcher is going into its eight season with no major injury
