  1. How the hell can you tangle a longnet to the extent where you have to cut the net? There are 15 1/2 meshes and a head line and footrope. Beats me!
  2. 100% right there sniffer, I have noticed it is mostly kids that are still wet behind the years that are taking the proverbial out of this lad. They aught to be greatfull that someone does not take them to task over some of their own posts. Some of which begger belief to say the least. To Be honest they are nothing but bullies, once one makes a post the rest join in. Really hope it makes them feel good.
  3. Every year without fail. Altough this year it has only shown up about 3 weeks ago. It looks like this is a new strain because it has wiped out almost all the rabbits. Very little left now.
  4. I would say it is a hen Salmon kelt. There are 6 things that make me think this. 1. The length of the maximil plate in relation to the eye. 2. The grip that he has on its wrist he would not be able to grip a Sea trout in the same way. 3. The adipose fin is inflamed. 4. If you look at the vent of the fish it is protruding. 5. The dorsal fin looks as if it has a touch of UDN. 6. If it were a springer it would have just entered the river system, and been a bar of silver. This fish looks coloured although it is hard to tell by the photo. Of course I may be completely wrong.
  5. The net looks fine, double stranded. The pegs should be replaced you will find it almost impossible to get those into the ground. If you do not fancy replacing them at least shave a long taper on them that will help you get them into the ground. Edited to say, if you want first class nets get hold of netrigger or mole catcher, the stuff they sell is first class.
  6. nope i dont think so. they are well fed and lazy and i dont think tyhey would eat all of those guts  And exactly how much chasing is involved with a snared rabbit?
  7. My first thoughts. Foxy would have eaten what he wanted then left the rest, or taken the whole rabbit.

    Big Cats

I would put my money on photoshop. Look at the people on the tor, they had to get up there and a wild cat stayed around for a group of people to walk past it and then done a parade for them? Yehhh, as if!!!!

    Big Cats

Two main reasons. Firstly, do not believe everything you read in newspapers. Secondly, if you shot it with a rifle and it was not on your ticket. Bye bye FAC.

Not a Leopard or a Puma but a foreign cat none the less.

    starter bird

Could not agree with you more. Before I had my first bird, I done three years just ferreting for my mentor asking questions and generally learning. It was a good thing that I did. Once I did get my first bird I had assumed that I would be able to go out with my mentor, But although he was there for advice, he did not want another bird flying when he was flying his M Harris. If you are going to fly a bird you will need a ferret so if you do not have one get one now and offer your services to ferret for someone. You will learn a lot from it. Tiercel Just an after thought you might
  12. Sir, You might like to amend that statement as purse nets work on an entirely different principle to long nets. The two cannot be compared. Tiercel.
  13. I have always used shaped nets, yes rabbits do get out of them. BUT, when they do I blame myself not the net. Whats that saying? A bad workman always blames his tools I have seen photos of nets laid over holes, and had that person who laid them been out with me he would have been told to pick them all up and set them properly. 99 times out of a 100 if a rabbit has got past a net it is because the net was not set correctly for that hole. Each hole has a path to it if the netter can see it or not. Sometimes it is not even at the centre of the hole but to one side or other, if a net is set
  14. Ianrob, That was a good bit of information there. There are many ways to apply heat to sticks so that you are able to straighten them. The way you have shown there is available to anyone. For people who do not realise that you can actually straighten sticks, you have shown that all you need is a heat source and a little bit of pressure. Good post. Tiercel
  15. If that was a true wild Polecat you would not be handling it after a month in captivity. Well not without welding gauntlets anyway. Tiercel

    A question

To be honest with you I find that statement rather defeatist. Sounds like "I have never tried it, so I can't do it" How do you know untill you try? Try it in the daylight, you may have a pleasant surprise. It is not as difficult as it seems. There you go. As Chalkwarren said adaptability, you cannot have too many 'tricks up your sleve' if a stuation calls for longnets then use them. But, if purse nets are the better bet, then you use purse nets. try not to be blinkered in your approach, keep an open mind. . My opinions only, for what they are worth! Tiercel

I have heard about this system but I thought it was for people with little or no fieldcraft. Tiercel

    A question

I also peg as I go. I agree with mole catcher that rabbits will squat out in the field as they sense that something is wrong, or maybe even see you while you are running out the net. But as you are travelling slowly you are not posing a direct threat to them causing them to bolt for home. Just like, say, cattle or sheep would while walking the field grazing at night. Last time I went out, before I had finished setting the first 50 yds I already had 2 rabbits in the net. Now those rabbits must have seen or sensed me setting the net. However, rather than making a bolt for home they must have
