Sounds as if you were keeping Crows there Are you sure they were Guinea fowl? As every one I have kept just say Comeback, comeback comeback in that high pitched tone. And by the way they are really extra tasty in the eating department. TC

Cameron is a 14-year-old boy with learning difficulties. There are some things that he cannot grasp as easily as other people of the same age. Ace has been really good to Cameron in helping him to get out ferreting when he had no one to take him. Before anyone makes a judgement on Ace he has really put himself out to help the boy. Unfortunately Cam cannot understand that what he has done is ethically wrong. I am sure that this can be overcome quite amicably. TC

Try advanced netting. Have used them for years. TC

kay, I find with Tomatoes, one mans meat is anothers poison so to speak. My wife loves Shirleys when they are almost ripe. (yuck) Myself I perfer very ripe Tomatoes. Do a google search for outdoor Tomatoes and try as many as you can fit in. To me flavour beats yield evert time. Sorry I digress the name you want is Gardeners delight. TC

last day out of the ferreting season for the JCR crew
Tiercel replied to jcrcrew's topic in Ferrets & Ferreting
Well what can be said. Artistic Impession. 9 out of 10 Content 10 out of 10 Techincal merit 6 out of 10 You all looked like bloody ballet dancers in that clip all trying to get the most classical dive in. Still you have the rabbits there to be caught and you are doing the job. Well done. TC -
This is the first time I have seen this lurcher and I must say I am impressed. I love the way she carries the rabbits, and a good work ethic with her. One thing is puzzling me though why would you work her with a collar on? TC

When you talk about Tomatos you are talking personal taste. To me Shirleys while being a good cropper lacks somewhat in the taste department. Alicante, Moneymaker and Alisa Craig are pretty much the same. I have tried a few heritage varieties along with some exotic varieties. Out of the heritage varieties I would recommend Hearald not too bad a cropper but to me brilliant taste, although they are prone to greenback so keep the greenhouse well shaded. Out of the exotic varieties, while they are not in the same class to the more moden varieties yield wise there are some spectaculer and unusual t

In March I will be planting Shallots, Onions, Parsnip and Broad beans (The Sutton). It all depends what part of the country you live in. Cornwall can be a month earlier than Scotland. There is one cabbage that you can sow now and have a return on by June thats Duncan a F1 variety that you can sow almost all the year round. I get it from Marshals seeds, but having done a quick google there are a few places that sell it. It is expensive seed but well worth it. These are some from last year. I kept a rotation going and even with the root fly and the cabbage white I still had a good r

It is illegal to use a long nets and ferrets for catching rabbits in some countries. Canada, USA are a couple.

The net loft. Look no further.

And what exactly has this to do with longnetting? Stubby you even answered the post get a grip man

Brimmer, was that not a great days ferreting? How many times was your heart racing wondering if the jill was ever going to bolt the rabbits? Your waiting there all senses tuned for the slightest movement or sound, if fact, your so wired up you feel you could explode any minute. Welcome to the world of no locator ferreting. Of course as soon as the snow melts you will be back up on the top, doing your pest control as you do so effectivly, and you will be into the numbers once again. But I am willing to bet you will not get as much pleasure out of that as your no dig challenge. Wel

Spot on. Incidentely it was on a warren like the last one you done that I lost the only ferret I have ever lost. The holes looked simple enough to a 15 year old at least. But after she had not emerged i tried digging around the rock to see if I could find her all I found was a crevis about 6" wide that seemed to go down for ever. Even though it was a good five mile walk to the farm i went back 3 or 4 times but never did find her.

Personally I think this thread has achived it's purpose. I would like to thank each and every contributer. Bar one or two exeptions it has been carried out in a very civil manner. We all have differences of opinions and who is to say who is right and who is wrong as long as we air them in a civil manner thats what counts. jenksi87 In the fullness of time you will get your locator but I urge you use it wisely. Untill then take the opotunity to learn all you can about your dog and ferret watch the dog see how he reacts to different warrens if he shows intrest in a warren net it up no matter
-
No, use your head looking at warrens, any drains leave alone fullstop, or real deep looking holes. Try the smaller warrens, allways in with a chance if things do get hard, use one ferret, better a jill to bolt, keep away from sight and try not to make to much noise and you are already lessening the chances of trouble. Watch the dogs, most dogs can be usefull on a warren, there nose and ears are better than yours. If you can get a locater it's good insurance, and morally right if the ferrets start killing down. 100% good advice.
-
Short and simple answer. NO, it is possible, is not anything. As long as the ferret is well fed before being used, then even if it makes a kill it is unlikely to stay in for too long all you need is a little patience if it does happen. The ferret will emerge. one bit of advice I would give you is to get yourself a Jill if you are going to work them without a locator on a regular basis.

I dont see where my post count comes into it? Surly it should be the content of the post that counts. And as you have agreed with my agument after intial resistance to it. That is what counts not the number of posts. Nobody is disputing that a locator is a fine piece of technology. In the right hand it can and does save a lot of time and makes that bag at the end of the day bigger. I stand to be corrected but from what I have read on here Brimmer is one of the most successful ferreters that contributes in terms of numbers of rabbits taken on a regular basis. By his own admittion he resort

If that is not bullying what is?
-
To be honest Brimmer I have seen them used a couple of times and I have to agree with you they are good with a capital G in the right hands. That said I have seen one chap using one and his attitude was why should I be quiet? I have the locator I can dig them out. Going back to what you posted previously on this thread, that you still use traditional methods on the deeper warrens. As diging there is not really an option as the warrens are so deep. You have the ability to do that because you learnt your trade so to speak first. How many of the people coming into ferreting rely on the l
-
What I am saying is. There is no legal obligation on him to get a locator to go ferreting. Therefor he can do as he pleases and not be bullied by anyone into getting something that he can do without.
-
Perhaps he cannot afford one? Ever thought of that?
-
jenksi87 This thread is about me trying to tell you that you do not need a locator to start ferreting. You have started the learning process, you have noticed that the ferret is lacklustre on entering the holes as there is nothing at home. You will see a difference in his behaviour once you put him in a warren with rabbits in.

From September to Christmas I ferret about twice maybe three times a week, not full days but a couple of hours here and there. Christmas to middle of Febuary when I feel like it. The rabbits are to tough to make good eating by then. The amount I catch has no baring as if I have a couple of rabbits or ten it make no odds to me. I grew out of the numbers game many years ago. I ferret for sport pure and simple. But since you have asked I have had + rabbits this year, I think, as I do not keep count as it is unimportant to me. What is important to me is how we work as a team dogs, ferrets and

With all due respect Brimmer I have read many of your posts and I must admit you are pretty effective at what you do. However, that said my take on the way you work and by your own admission, you are there to clear rabbits. No matter how, you need the numbers to keep your permission. Therefor you use methods that are effective, a ferret that will stay with the kill long enough for you to dig to it, a locator to find the said ferret and last but not least a spade to dig to the ferret. If you read my initial post you will see that I stated that professional rabbits use this method as it is so ef

Well in 45 years it has never happened to me. But you have still not told me how it can happen.
