  1. Having had dogs of various sorts over the last 45 years. I feel I may be able to give an impartial opinion here. Having read all of the thread there have been some good points made on both sides. Breeding will usually tell but not always. I bought a pup of a mod on this site too many years ago to want to remember. I went to him as he had a very good working bitch crossed with a very good dog. Now that litter produced some cracking workers and obedience dogs. The pup had nearly all the attributes that anyone would look for in a pup, bar for one, it was just too keen! It could never work o
  2. Tuck it under your arm and stretch out and where it would fit into the palm of your hand, thats the length for your size, this is from Molecatchers book That is for the traditional set net. Pre set systems use longer pegs approx 30". TC
  3. And I will second that! TC
  4. If you are getting paid to clear the rabbits it is. Agree 100% But if you are rabbiting for sport and get upset about losing a rabbit then personally I dont think that rabbiting is for that type of individual. This is where people say if I don’t I will lose my permission. BOLLOCKS. If you have that little faith in your ability then you should not be rabbiting. No matter how good you are you will never catch every rabbit. Fact. But neither will anyone else. We all get good days and bad days it's the rub of the green as they say. The sooner people accept that and live with it the
  5. Fat-Ferret, You have captured the essence of long netting. It's not about numbers, its about being out there and doing it. One rabbit can give as much pleaseure as 20, even more pleasure sometimes when it is really hard won from a difficult set. I think there are two types of long netter, the ones that do it for the pure pleasure of the sport and the ones who just see it as another method in their armoury. I cannot begin to describe the pleasure I get from a couple of drops of the net. TC
  6. I enjoyed that little poem, and it just about sums up longnetting. TC
  7. There is one simple answer to that question. As long as it takes. Dont worry how long it will take you, time cost nowt. Just consentrate on sewing the net you will be surprised how quick it comes together. TC
  8. Although it does come down to the amount of tension you can put on the running lines when setting the net. The more tension you can put on the lines the further apart you can set the pegs. That said if i were expecting a big bag I would go down to 4 yards even. As you will be surprised how much even 3 rabbits hitting a net in a short distance will pull the headline down. TC
  9. Has to be traditional and hazel for me, as you said, there is nothing like the feeling you get when you leave with a few rabbits, although numbers are unimportent. It feels like you have taken on the rabbits on their terms and won. Theres no feeling like it. The only way it can get better is when you do it with a net you have made yourself. TC
  10. You will need at least 11 pegs thats one every 5 yds on flat ground. but a few more may be needed on uneven ground where you may need to put more pegs in to keep the nets foot line on the ground. Hope that helps. TC
  11. Another couple of fine nets there netrigger What have you done to the first one though? TC
  12. Kay, You could end up with a picture like this. They will be mating at this time too, so keep an eye out for them, as they make a spectaculer display when they do mate. TC
  13. Kay, The photo is of a damsel nymph climbing up a reed stalk from there it will split and the damsel fly will emerge from the case. Brilliant to see, well worth the wait. TC
  14. If you had kept an eye on this one you may have had some brilliant photos of the Dammouselle ( lady of the lake) fly emerging. Some good photo's in there. TC
  15. There is no such thing as the perfect net. Although trammels do catch a higher percentage of rabbits that hit the net. The rabbits also take three times as long to extract from the net. So it depends on your out-look, if you want to catch nearly every rabbit that hits the net and do not mind taking a long time to get the rabbits out of the net. Added to that the extra time it take to shoot and pick up the net Then go for a trammel. However, that said, a normal well made net will be just behind the trammel in catching abilities. The plus factors with the normal 100% bagging net is the

    longneting

Woz, As mole catcher probably told you his book only gives you the basic machanics of longnetting. It tells you in a very clear and easily digested way how to set and pick a net up. The rest is up to you as you are a person who is willing to think for himself and not afraid to fail, as we all have done at sometime or other. You will make a success of longnetting as by those failiers we learn. The only real way to learn is to try things, if it works brilliant if it does'nt then we have learnt something. As a lot of people on here will know, you can give advice till your blue in the
  17. Every ferret breeders dream a litter of one. That looks one healthy kit there, you lucky girl. TC
  18. Wrong there!! A spicies is only a pest if it causes a nusiance or damage. Same as a weed is only a weed in your garden, outside your garden it's just another wild flower. TC
  19. No better place to buy them than The Net Loft. First class quality and free knowledge into the bargain. TC
  20. Originally a Brock now a naturlised Turk. And it is true what they say about the Gurnos even the police dogs go round in twos. TC
  21. Is it not if you caught enough during the season? TC
  22. yes, otherwise you would have to say the same about any "pest species", should we stop killing rats/mice because they have young, do shooters stop shooting woodies, as they may have young in the nest, what about drey poking, you'll always get the for and against argument, I can understand that those that ferret only for sport, and have small areas of permission, always use the explanation, that it will spoil it for the winter months, but for those of us, that are lucky to either have larger permissions, or do it as part of our job will ferret all year if need be, the same goes for the other pe
  23. As they have nearly finished spawning now there are Bass showing on storm beaches. Instead of waiting for reports have you thought about going out and trying? TC
  24. Its hard to tell from a photo as ther is nothing to refrernce its size against. As it is supposed to be the size of a chicken egg, there is only one species it can be that is an Owl. Its a Tawny or Barn Owl egg. Tawny owls will lay in old crows nests if there are not suitable nest sites, or all available nest sites are taken. TC
  25. Do you think that once you had entered your ferret you followed it around with the locator had anything to do with the fact that the rabbits did not bolt? Just a thought. TC
