  1. Was there any particular reason you posted this in the ferreting section?
  2. Emotive subject, but! He has not broken any laws. Moral code maybe. I know I could not bring myself to shoot the fawn in a sporting context, but there again I would not dig out a fox in a sporting context. I suppose it boils down to your values, what is abohrant to one person is anothers bread and butter. I will not shoot rabbits through the summer, but lot of people do, a lot of the time under the guise of pest control. He has been asked to do a job and he is doing it within the law. TC
  3. Ah I know what they are now. We have always known them as Ground nuts. TC
  4. no... these grow just under the ground, pigs love em, so do i lol....goggle it! sure they will be on there. good luck Nope I tried woodnut, groundnut earthnut No hit in wikiepedia or google. Any chance of a photo. The only thing I can think of is truffles. And if you seen the price on truffles you would not be eating them. AJ
  5. I think you are confused as to how a long net is made. The normal long net is knitted in 12 or 14 meshes across, the same way as a purse net is made. When you have completed the required length you then knit a selvage mesh on to each side of the net, making it 13 or 15 meshes deep. I think you are counting every row as a mesh, whereas there are two rows in a mesh. To tie a double knot if you use a Sheet bend you can either loop the twine around the mesh twice before you pull tight. or simlpy knot the twine twice on the same mesh. There is another knot you can use that is the Carric bend.
  6. Take it from me Mark as some one who has never had the balls to fly a Spar. Your thread has been a real good read Bar for the 3 idiots or should that be one jealous person who will never be able to do what you are doing. Jealousy is a poweful emotion when she gets you in her grip everyone else is wrong. You have done nothing but give a jernal of how the bird is progressing. If thats being smug then nearly everyone who writes a jernal of how a bird progresses is smug. Lets hope that the mods get off their arses and do some moderating. TC
  7. Bloody hell, first dolphion lover then rat killer now midnight hunter this thread is really pulling them out ofthe woodwork. It would be intresting for a mod to check the ip# of these people it is a fair bet that they are all the same number. They can then ban the number and any ID's associated with it. TC
  8. How you boys keep your cool will never cease to amaze me!! Some of the replies I have read in this section begger belief, that a person who proports to flying a bird can come out with such crap. Keep at it boys and remember ILLIGTITIMI NON CARBRUNDUM Never let the barstewards grind you down. Dafydd, good luck with the Goss this year. I have never flown one. To be honest never had the balls. If it does come good for you then you will be in for a treat. TC
  9. :clapper: Well said that man! TC
  10. Any fly that you have confidence in. I always liked a teal blue and silver for the night fishing. And a black spider for daytime low water fishing. Not saying they are the best flies. But I had confidence in them so will fish them for longer, and the longer your fly is in the water the more chance you have of catching a fish. TC
  11. lets have a little look at your post. 1 Denotes that you know him personally. 2 Agree 100% anyone who writes a book is doing just that. 3 Thats all it is your opinion. 4 See number 3 how do you know what their opinion of the book would be? 5 You certainly are, but that is just my opinion. That carries just as much weight as your opinion here. SGW You really are a sad person to have to stoop to this level, if you have a problem with Martin confont him face to face. From what I have seen at the Welsh Game Fairs over the years you are in no position to comment on any long
  12. SGW, do you have a timescale for this total forum dominance that you threaten. Is it a coincedence that the school holidays have just started? A few words of advice put your brain into gear before you open your mouth. Then make sure you can substantiate what comes out. So far you have only made a fool of yourself. Longnetting Peg to Peg is full of good info for beginner and experienced netter alike. Can't wait to see what form your jottings and experience will take. You put me in mind of a chap I spoke to at the Welsh this year all bull and no substance. TC
  13. The recent ( last 10 years) spate of internet forums catering for hunting people are many and varied. To be honest I enjoy visiting most. Today I started to think about their purpose? Who are they for? Who benefits from them? Most if not all are run by people who have a passion for hunting no matter what form it takes. Mostly at their own cost. They seem ideal, somewhere where like-minded people can share ideas and embrace other peoples ways of doing the same discipline, no matter what discipline that may be. Somewhere where newcomers to the hunting game can come and learn off of people wh
  14. Many years ago I went to stay with a friend and ended up looking like your photos. I did not know what the bites were so went to the Doctors. He took one look and said AHHH bed bugs take this and apply it 3 times a day. Not at all funny then, itched like hell I cannot belive that they are still about. TC

When a rabbit hits a net in the day, it does so at speed and sometimes at an acute angle, it is this angle of hitting the net that sees the rabbits bouncing off the back of the nets and causes them to sometimes run back away from the net. The idea is that while the nets are rigged 100% bagging when a rabbit runs on to the net it's toes get caught and starts the meshing of the rabbit. Not a new idea the multi strand net has been around as long as nets have been made. TC

You can buy the twine from mole catcher. It comes in 1.5 kilo balls. Trouble is you need two 1.5 kilo balls so that you can load the needles. But @ 12 meshes deep 1.5 kilos will make a 50yd net with 100% bagging. So 2 balls will give you enough twine to make 2 x 50 yd nets. You will also need a heavier twine for the selvage. Hope this helps. TC

How dos this work then mate, your saying rabbits wont cross a net because of foot problems, then you go on to saythat your knitting long nets to catch them by the toes. Can you explain in a bit more detail because its got me baffled It goes like this. For a lift net to work it needs rabbits to pass over it as it lays on the floor. Then the net is sprung and the rabbits are driven back into the net. A long net used in the traditional manner ( upright ) gets the rabbits driven into it before the rabbits hit the back of the net they will be standing on the net it is then t

If that remark was aimed at me? I am not doubting merely giving an opinion! If you had bothered to read my first post I stated, "I was willing to be proved wrong". I have no need of all these new fangled gadgets that people use these days or as in this case not so new fangled. If someone uses them and are happy with the result then. What more do you need? However, if someone goes to the expense of buying 200 yards of a new fangled gadget, uses it once, then stashes it away, never to be used again, that speaks volumes to me. TC
  19. I supose that the natural assumption is if a jill dies while in season is that the season has caused it. However, I mated a jill this year as she was a very good worker and I wanted some kits off her. This was her third season and she had never been mated. She only had 4 young and was doing them well when she just uped and died on me. Fine in the morning, when I went to give her the evening meal at 8pm she was allbut dead. By 10pm she was. Am I to blame that on the fact that I had mated her this year? There could be any number of reasons why the jill died, the same goes if a jill dies whi
  20. Most animals / birds are better for the ferrets if they have been frozen for a few weeks, as it kills any worms and or parasites that the animal may have. TC

Perhaps it's because the hay or Stubble is not fixed and they cannot get their toe nails caught in them? TC
  22. Spot on. I have never had any trouble, the only problem I have noticed is that they will not moult till they come out of season. TC
