  1. We had 4 black ones out of 8 rabbits Sunday before last. My luck is still as bad as it was, before we caught them. By the way eight was our best day this season. So maybe there is nothing in it. TC
  2. To be honest you have to be some kind of idiot to tangle a long net. I would not use a 4z purse net even for a bet, the same goes for a 6z long net, they are both useless. The 4z is too light for a purse net and the 6z is too heavy for a long net. Just trying to give you some sound advice. TC
  3. No need to replace the lines just overlap the two ends and sew them together. They work just as well as a splice and will last for years, this join is about 20 years old. TC
  4. yeah tiercel that would make more sense to break it down,i never thought of that, thanks, would you say 6z net would be adequate,i can get loads of hazel poles round my way,so would it just be the net and cord i would be looking for?oh i have just ordered LONGNETTING FROM PEG TO PEG.ATB I would not use 6z although a lot of people do and are happy with them. I would go for 4z the idea of the net is to tangle rabbits, the finer the net the lighter it is, and the easier it tangles rabbits. Once you read Martins book your first question will be answered also. TC
  5. Personally I would not go for 2x100 yard nets. But break it down into more useful sizes something like 1x50 4x25 5x10 yard nets same total of net, that will cover almost any situation you would come across during a days ferreting. TC
  6. Funnily enough I have never had a problem with the lines wearing, some of my nets are nearly 25 years old and still have the original running lines. Although they do have a lot of patches where the rabbits have chewed the mesh and a few repairs to the running lines, natural wear and tear to me. As my long netting is done single handed I can be away from the net for 15 minutes sometimes more while banting the field. It does not take a rabbit long to chew through even 3mm line. I know of a few people who single handed long net and every one of them have had lines chewed through at some
  7. There is not a better reason on the planet. The reason I use 1.5mm is that, when you hank the net onto the end pins the hank is so large using 3mm that it makes the net difficult to hold when setting and picking up. Where as with 1.5mm it is totaly managable. Of course with a pre set net it does not matter as it all goes in the basket.
  8. I use 1.5mm for all my long nets I have never snapped a line by pulling on it yet although I have had a few bitten through. TC
  9. This may be of help to you, you could create more slack in the net if you start the netting off the first peg instead of the end pin. I noticed that the end pin is about a yard from the first peg if it is the same the other side of the net thats two yards of netting going to waste. Try setting the net as in this photo. You will be suprised how much more slack (bagging) that will give you in the net. That net was made with the exact same dimentions as yours. Hope that helps. TC Edited to add. I was just putting that net on the running lines and had not spliced the
  10. I have 4z net that is over 20 years old and no rabbit has ever broken a mesh by hitting it. Many have chewed through the net, but that would be the same with a 6z. You need a net to tangle rabbits up. the thicker the twine the less chance of them tangling. TC
  11. As it is coming to the end of the season now just put them in an airy dry place till next year, they will have seasoned by then. TC
  12. Next years hazel pegs ready to be sorted and dried. TC
  13. For me it is Hazel every time roughly about 15 to 20mm in diameter. Although I know of one chap that is trying privet this year but have not spoken to him to see how they went. TC

    Selvedge

Gollum, The selvedges on hand knitted nets has a few effects on how the net works. The main one though is that the selvedge twine is stronger than the body of the net to stop the net wearing out. Personally I would go for the 10/9 twine as in my eyes a selvedge of the same twine as the body of the net is made out of, even though it is doubled up, will still wear at the same rate as if there was no selvedge there. As for the friction of doubled up twine slowing a net down when end setting, I cannot say that I have noticed that effect. Another good reason for using a stiffer tw
  15. Rubber band [bike inner tube cut up] around each net, keeps the nets tidy in the bag, and if you have a band or bands left in your pocket there are still nets down. Worked for me for the last 30 odd years. Simples TC
  16. Any hedgerow or wood that contains hazel. TC

  18. I was hurt so much when we went to the vets i couldn't hold the dog he did he also saw me pay the bill in cash ( we have to pay each visit }He has been a star with the dog But on the other hand i did ask him 3 times not to take them out Tracey, You have done the right thing, and when this is over, it is over! He has paid what he could afford, even though he made the mistake he has atoned for it. It's not the first mistake he has made, it won't be the last. It could be that he gave you the money, hoping that you would say, "no you keep it son". Only you will know your son well e
  19. Tracey, When you get the final bill, don't pay it on the card pay it with cash and take him with you, let him see how much money his foolishness has cost. Let him pay his part of the bill, he sounds like a good lad and I am sure it will be a lesson that will really stick in his mind. TC
  20. Say what you mean, and mean what you say. I would take the money and put it all towards the vets fee's then show him the final bill and tell him he is lucky that £ is all he has to pay. The money for the vets bill has to come from somewhere, someone has to work for that money, and as he disregarded your advice and took the dogs out it is his responsabilty. Hopefuly it will be a quick but expensive learning curve for him. About the boots, you should have put wellies on before going across a field. Your fault there. TC
  21. Seeing this post put's me in mind of a mates signiture. Kids that hunt shoot and fish, do not mug old ladies. It's great to see them going it alone. TC
  22. This thread is one of the most intresting I have ever read on here. I did as you suggested Shaun and did the google search, it threw up a lot of facts and figures about rabbits that we in the UK cannot begin to comprehend. Another factor that was intresting was how the rabbit changed the habits of Australian preditors. Like in this video. TC
