This Mornings Walk With The Pot Licker
Tiercel replied to Tiercel's topic in Wildlife and General Photography
Curlew waiting for the tide to drop so that they can feed on the mudflats. TC -
As above went down the estuary for a stroll. Pity I could not get closer to some of the birds. Curlew waiting for the tide to go back. Just a nosey bugger. Little Egret wish I could have gotten closer or had a tidy camera. TC

Thanks for the replies gents. I had not really thought about getting an older dog in. I have only ever bought one older dog well she was two and although she was a good working dog we just never clicked as a team, if you know what I mean. The bond between man and dog works both ways I feel.To me a dog is not just an accessory it is a partner, so not only does the dog have to bond with me, I have to bond with the dog. I feel I have to know the dog inside out to be able to trust it. The problem with getting dog from a pound and the likes is you never know the history of the dog, whereas

This year I had to have the old terrier PTS. "Thats it" I thought no more, I am nearly 60 with a collapsed artery in my leg and find walking very difficult and painfull. So I thought." Is it worth getting another pup?" The answer for various reasons was no. Well it's been about 5 months now and I feel a part of me is missing, bar for 5 years I have not been without a working dog since I was 10. We still have the wifes pot licker and as good as she is, it's just not the same. Today I went for a walk and took the pot licker as usual, but as obedient as she is there is no connection there.

Been making nets a long time. One thing I never worry about is how long it takes. It just does not matter if it takes 20 minutes or 3 days, all that matters is, you have a net that the knots dont slip and it does the job. Dont get into the cock measuring game. Do what suits you, your the only person you have to please. TC

I have never set over 50 nets so I can't comment on that, the most I have set is around the 40 mark. With my hand on my heart I can honestly say I have not lost a net in the last 20 odd years, in fact I cannot remember even losing a net, but, I may well have in the past. The method I use is elastic bands, but instead of putting them on my wrist they go in a pocket, never count them out or in, if there are bands left in the pocket there are still nets down simple as. However, that is fine when working on your own, it is when there is more than one laying nets from the same bag that the prob

Is it not the case with art, that it is not just how a picture looks but how it makes you feel also? I think of Lowrie and his matchstick people, yet they are appreciated the world over. TC

I used to ferret some marsh land. Then cattle were introduced to alllow wild flowers that were being stifled by the uncut grasses to florish. Net result was the wildflowers are blooming and the rabbits have nearly all dissapeared. The only explanation I can give is that the warrens are all on the higher ground. The cattle when feeding trample the warrens, the warrens are all shallow as, if they go deeper the warrens tend to flood. TC

My Grandfather who was what was known in Wales as A Gaffer Haulier. (Was a foreman in the underground stables) Used to wear trousers made from mole skins. At that time there were no pit head baths the miners came home in the clothes they wore to work and had a bath in front of the fire. My mother told me that the trousers were never washed, just given a good shake out the back and worn till they wore out. TC

i know what your saying, its not a bad idea if you have the right place of course . im just saying i dont think you could explain your way out of it to a copper. a car load of live coneys i mean you're on your way back from pets at home and you have 30 nieces and nephews who all asked for a rabbit for Christmas It's illegal to do what you're doing, right? but you're doing it and it's working out well for you.....so why announce it to the world?? just keep your head down and enjoy the sport you've created for yourself.....you're just going to end up drawing unwanted attention to yours

That is one of the main advatages of trad over quick sets. With the trad net you get to place the pegs where they are needed. TC

Long netting at night with a traditional set of nets is something very special, you either get it or you dont. I have been doing it for well over 20 years and I am still learning. The easy part is shooting the net . There are so many other factors to take into consideration, access, wind direction & strength, natural preditors that may have been on the set, what time the rabbits feed. They all factor in the result at the end of the night. As I always say, if you do not like a challenge, then perhaps long netting at night is not for you? TC

It's good to see that after the weekends rugby that It is not just the Welsh who are getting ahead of thenselves, I have read posts ( on rugby forums) where Wales are going on to win the championship????? FFs they have just won their first match out of nine. That was more by luck than judgement ( a little tounge in cheek that last remark) Two games in and the Sais are saying a grand slam is on the cards. FFS there is no shame in hoping, but to state that there is no one to stop them is just.........silly TC
