BIRCH SAP WINE Choose a silver birch of at least 10 ' (1/4 m) diameter at base - not downy as it gives an unpleasant sap. The best time is in early spring when the sap is rising, before the leaves open but when the drooping apex of the tree has a red-pink colour through it. The idea is to extract a gallon of sap from a hole drilled into the bark and transfer via a plastic tube to a gallon jar. A standard 1-gallon bottle (from a home wine making shop) takes a 1" cork; so take a hand drill and a 1" auger drill. Just penetrate through the bark (usually less than a 1/4' or 6 mm), put the cork in

Roast Haunch of Venison
bullmastiff replied to bullmastiff's topic in Living Off The Land & Game Cooking
I preheated it to 250ºC then as I put the joint in I turned it down to 170ºC (Fan assisted oven). It say's in the books to cook for 15 mins at 250ºc then turn down to 170ºc but our oven is quite efficant and doesn't cool down very quickly, so I turn it down as soon as the meat goes in. Cheers Luke. -
Now that sounds bloody lovely! Where do you live, I'll be round for dinner tomorrow!!! The point is he's trying to convert people to Game so doesn't want it too full on! plus it's free, wild and healthy!!! Cheers Luke

Did you use a deep fat fryer to cook it? and how do you know when it's cooked? (I want to try this!) Cheers Luke.

1st Kill, 1st Dinner - Rabbit
bullmastiff replied to Quasar's topic in Living Off The Land & Game Cooking
Congratulations on your first Rabbit and by the looks of it, you did it proud! -
Had some friends round yesterday so thought it was a good excuse to cook a Roe Haunch (usually too much for just me and the wife). Rubbed some Olive oil onto it, a dusting of Nutmeg, Paprika, dried Rosemary, a bay leaf and a few crushed Juniper berries, then covered it with some oak smoked streaky bacon I managed to get cheap from Morrisons and wrapped it in tin foil. 15 mins per pound then 20 mins with the foil open to brown it off. Served with Roast spuds cooked around the joint and some mixed veg it was delicious! and went down a treat! Eating like kings and all for the

Thank you all, he definately seemed up for it, but as you say it might be he just doesn't to disapoint his mum (or me I suppose?) I was thinking of starting him on the airrifle just with Targets to start and see how he finds it? This all came about because the dog accidentally caught a duck and two pigeons on an early morning walk round Crystal Palace Park when we were visiting them for New Years eve. Then he wanted to go out with the dogs. I explained that they were hunting dogs and what they could do to feed us and he seemed keen as Mustard. Next thing I know a week later, his mum's on th

My 2nd cousin is going to be coming down from Bromley to stay with us for a few days and wants to try his hand at some fieldsports. Both my wife and his mum (my cousin) are expecting me to take him out, but my problem is my naivety when it comes to city kids! He's never seen anything die, let alone killed anything himself! Is it best to just throw him in at the deep end with gun safety and then get him shooting bunnies or take him lamping first? (as the dog brings them back dead) is it best to let him watch other people doing it first perhaps? He seems keen enough, but I don't think he quite

Surely they can get ballistics off of the pellets? it's bound to be kids, and fairly local, so a house to house should sort it quite quick I would of thought? but I suppose they wouldn't get the Warrant for that just because of an animal cruelty case.

I'll be going again, although it is bloody loud in there! last time we went every terrier tried latching on to Tia and we ended up getting a Lurcher! Be nice to finally catch up with you Topper as we keep missing each other! Cheers Luke.

Good on you guys, Their starting a bit early up there aren't they? is it getting warmer now? (noticed theirs no frost is all!)

Did you wash the pellets before you Lubed them? could be varying amounts of oil caught with grit dust etc. on the pellets? I've found a bit of differance in groupings from unwashed to washed pellets with a couple of drops of Lube in a tin. Also its easy to put too much Lube in a tin ending up with greasy looking pellets. Just a thought. Cheers Luke.

bullmastiff replied to bullmastiff's topic in Living Off The Land & Game Cooking
Smashing, Thank you Jim. Cheers Luke. -
I thought they said 40 million? £20,000 a weekend for 10. (£1000 each a day!) Thats peanuts to some Companies, call it a team bonding exercise and you can probably deduct it from your tax bill as training!!!

I've been using a wood saw up till now and it's a bugger of a job with this, even tried a junior Hacksaw but took forever! Anyone reccomend one? cheap as possible please! Cheers Luke.

2 rabbits jointed and soaked in 2 pints of milk overnight, 50g of bacon rashers, chopped, 2 Onions chopped, Mace or Nutmeg, Salt and Pepper. After you've soaked it overnight, remove and dry the rabbit joints (keep the milk), then fry with the Bacon and onions. Once browned, add all ingredients including the milk and bake in a covered dish for 1 1/2 hours at 180ºC. Remove Rabbit joints and simmer the sauce to thicken (or cheat and add flour). Serve with veg and tatties. As an after thought, though I haven't tried it yet. This recipe would probably be really nice topped with thin

Bet taken! but for the first time ever - I hope I lose! If anyone mentions it, it will be the Presenter whilst playing devils advocate to a Veggie. So far the only views the Estate owner has had a chance to put across was about gun saftey and as for poor Arthur! bet he just wants to slap them upside the head and knock some sense into them. He's a far more patient man than me! When the Presenter said this is Arthurs job and the blonde bint replied 'well he's stupid then' she's just bloody lucky they didn't hear her! It's a long lonely walk back to civilisation!!! (chance to see if them sco

The CYMAG was supposed to represent the scientists releasing Myxi on the rabbit population (doesn't look as dramatic as them popping infected rabbits or fleas into burrows) This one would of helped Farmer Giles and his pest problem with an up shot that you can eat the Rabbits (not that many of them enjoyed it). As soon as they mention 'Sporting birds' they then label us as Toffs shooting Innocent birds for sport, they always forget to mention that all these birds are destined for the food chain that each sporting bird as they keep calling them, will be paid for twice, Once to shoot it and
