So do you think a gun dog breed is more a pack animal and happy to work in a team to get a kill if so does this make the running dog breeds come from a line of single hunting animals (loners) or is it nurture and not nature.

Not wanting to hi-jack the paperwork topic so I will just make an observation it seams to me that some folk who run lurchers and terriers don't appreciate the time spent on training gundogs as I see lots of topics about this or that pup ready for next season by the way I'VE GOT ME TIN HAT ON READY TO BE SHOT DOWN cos I don't really know how long it takes to train your dogs anyway for me the dog is normally about 20 -24 months old when I can say it,s good enough to work to expectation and not to field trial standards as I am not a dog trainer but just try to get them to work well enough for m

Not important to lads who havn't got them for the dogs they have. Not important if the dog you have is a good un. To me when after a pup its important for me to find out what it's potential could be because not everyone has the luck to know some one who has a litter to such and such's bitch and the dog's owner is on's best pal .So checking papers can help.

anyone got an old lightforce 170 for sale as I need the reflector/lens for my lamp as mine was stolen this week'
-
Well got home to find some kind soul had decided that my lightforce 170 roof lamp would be better in his hands than on my truck but as the unit is a permanent fixture the enterprising person took the reflector/lens cover of the lamp so now I have a base of a lamp that's of little use and lambing is in progress this is when I use the thing the most so if anyone has an old 170 for spares or repair then I would buy it from you, as long as its a genuine sale and it's not knocked off cos in my mind anyone knowingly buying stolen goods is no better in fact they are worse than the thief that took i

No that's not what my post says = not soft so can be easily trained and turn out to be good hard hunting dogs I have a small video of her working on this site if you look for it polly flushing pheasants .

bit late in the day to ask as you are getting a pup anyway the little bitch I have with a strong line to these dogs is a hard and fast hunter but at first I could not bond with her as she was so head strong but as she was not a soft natured type I could put pressure on her when training She did not bulk up to a good weight until she was about four years old now she is a little bulldozer.Sure you will get on fine with the dog you have to it's with you for a long time to come

sorry philluk just noticed that slipper does say he has the dog at heel. I still think temperament comes into it when to start the stop whistle training and to start to early with it can make a dog very sticky when out hunting and to me having to urge a dog on to hunt is as bad as it running in you can enforce the stop whistle but its not so easy to up its hunting skill Anyway of track all I can add to comments is slipper slow down with the training take your time 6 months is no age most folk don't start the real training until the pup is a bit older.
-
What I was trying to put across was you have to add commands into the training as the dog progresses while maturing and its ability to understand your commands grow and not decide to concentrate on one at a time. As we are posting about springers at 6 months you assume the lad has his dog at heel at this age and you advise from this starting point not taking into consideration the dogs temperament many folk I know will not teach a spaniel to walk at heel until later on in its training they get the flow of hunting first and decide what the dogs natural abilities are they polish these but put

can I just point out that you should work on the weak aspects of the dog not its strengths so if he doesn't hunt hard but retrieves well then use the dummy to get the pup to hunt and if he parks his bum when on the lead when you stop walking then that's the time to bring on the stop whistle my take on this is you are just taking what the dog has easily learnt and moving on to what you want him to do without to much fuss.o m o mind .

you can try and build a bond by letting the dog off in a area like a garden or even in the house take no notice of the dog at all even when he comes to or wants your attention as soon as he gives up and walks away call him to you in other words you don't allow him take charge of the situation you make the moves not the dog I think this type of training is a good first building block without you being to harsh with your dog as firm does'nt mean over the top or you loose any bond you have with the dog and he won't forget or forgive you.as always only my opinion

I kennel dogs in boxes if any start to bark I close the door on the box and they settle could be a bright moon or shadows from trees that sets them off but all I know is it stops my lot from barking.
