  1. exactly as MR L says. they may question why your cousin needs a .243 and a .308 or a .223 and a .243. as long as he can explain why he needs each calibre the police aren't allowed to refuse him certain calibres. unless of course he has a lack of experience
  2. fine if you want to eat them as well. just need to headshot them and accept the fact there wont be a head left when you get there. nothing wrong with that shooting
  3. if you can get the cheap stuff to work in your rifle then you're lucky. its rifle dependant so your most accurate round may be more expensive than the cheaper stuff. but best of luck with it. while you're on a role with this post you may as well ask inform everyone of your budget so we can help you out on the set-ups you might want. if you already have your mind set then no worries
  4. i'm not denouncing the .17hmr because i have one and its a quality calibre. it certainly has its place in my cabinet as its an awesome medium range rabbit tool and great for magpies, rooks, crows and the odd pigeon. however, in your situation i might suggest you go for the .223 unless you're happy to buy all three calibres. the .22lr certainly has a place because from my experience its an awesome close range rabbit round, cheap and deadly quiet. a typical reloading setup with the basics will cost you roughly 200 quid though ive spent considerably more on mine. thats cheaper than a .17hmr is go
  5. just a thought. is reloading completely out of the question for you. because if it isnt you could scrap the 17hmr and keep the .223. if you reload a .223 i reckon with some tinkering you'd be able to get loads that are cheaper than typical hmr ammo. especially as the last box's i got cost me £12.50 a box. that way you have a .22lr for close range rabbiting and a .223 for foxing a long range rabbiting. just a thought to consider before you send off the certificate ATB Jack
  6. ive been a member of this fantastic site for a good year now and have recently noticed that the quality of posts no matter which section has degraded somewhat. people are so quick these days to slate each other at the slightest difference in opinions. whats happened to the good ole constructive comments on here. nice post FH, i promise ill get u that muntjac some time soon ATB Jack
  7. i just ordered one with all the rest of the normal case preparation equipment, primer pocket cleaner, lyman flash hole uniformer tool, case length case and cutters. does anyone own one and whats it like? cheers, jack
  8. ive started using federal v-shock as well and their fantastic for my rifle. what ive noticed what you'll probably find is similar to what i find when i go and fetch a rabbit ive shot. most are still moving but i can assure you that they are stone dead. im no biologist but its simply the nervous system creating spasms which causes them to flail about. anything past 100 yards and the wound is relatively clean. under that, you tend to find a large part of the head missing. THEYRE ALWAYS VERY DEAD
  9. i agree and disagree with foxdroppers statement. i know how frustating it gets when you spend hours preparing then hours out on a trip and see nothing so for a first time shooter i can understand why you would feel like quitting after several failures. its that good experience that should cement shooting in your heart and im sure everyone on here can remember the first time they knew shooting was something they wanted to pursue. however, if you had the oppurtunity to go to Africa and stalk and shoot impala, something most of us can only dream of, and then feel like giving up after a few b
  10. ditto what everyone else has said, try as many brands as you can get your hands on. ive tried cci 20g which were crap, remington accutip which were OK and then decided that moa wasnt quite good enough especially for those longer shots on rabbits where missing was more frequent so i bought federal v-shock which group 0.3 inches at 100 yards. BUT THATS JUST MY RIFLE
  11. lads this argument is about as useful as telling a rugby man to like football instead or vice versa. its ridiculous, if you enjoy shooting then you'll probably prefer shooting rather than working with dogs. the same works the other way its about personal opinion and i doubt anyones going to change another persons mind on what they prefer. its personal preference clearly so everyone needs to stop bitching!
  12. out of curiosity how does that happen?
  13. rightyho, im going to call the FEO tomorrow and organize the whole thing. from the message i was left i only need mentoring for the stalking. being stupid i interpreted it so that if i had a mentor i would only be allowed out with him accompanying me. because i only need him when im stalking it means im free to shoot whenever i can and only need him to accompany me stalking so i think i shall take the offer as it stands. to be honest as i have little or no experience deer stalking it will be good to have him with me when going on stalks. that leaves me free for target work and lamping
  14. sgc. id be very suprised if you have any problems acquiring an sgc if you already have an FAC, however if youve never used a shotgun you may need to do some convincing. if i were you id get a telescopic sight on your .17hmr and get a 20 bore for shorter range rabbit shooting. good combo
  15. i'd agree with sterry, for rabbits on the run get a shotgun, maybe a 20 bore if you want a bit more range. ive got a 20 bore which i used to use for rabbit shooting before i got my FAC which proved very effective.
  16. unfortunately there is nobody else who lives locally that shoots centrefire. my old man is also loathe to have the keeper mentoring me as it ties him to me. he said he wouldnt mind doing it at all but my dad would rather not have him mentoring me simply because he doesnt think its fair on him to have to accompany me. i think what ive decided ill do is leave the deer condition off my certificate for now and after 6 months i'll ask to have it put back on due to more experience with a centrefire. the FEO said that wouldnt be a problem but if his boss is still not convinced i could alway
  17. ok so ive sent off a variation to add a .243 for fox and deer to my certificate. my FEO had an interview with me and said the only issue his boss might have is that as ive not held my rimfire for very long she may insist on me having another centrefire holder accompany me (just for the deer stalking) although he said he would argue my case to say i wouldnt need mentoring. so i just got back from Italy and i have a phone call saying the boss has insisted on me having a mentor until they say that i am fully qualified to be stalking deer. whats odd is that they did not impress on me doin
  18. nikko sterling nighteater 4-16x50. longest shot to date is a 186 yard hare headshot. cant complain
  19. well if your mostly shooting reds then i'd be inclined to say that if you are a beginner stalker then go for a higher calibre for your stalking. maybe a 6.5x55 would be more suitable or go for the .308. .243 is obviously more than capable if you're confident that you're an excellent shot 100% of the time but if you're just starting out it may not be so suitable. i think you need to spend a bit more time thinking about your calibre choice. i'd say that you dont need both a .22lr and a .17hmr to begin with so choose one. i use a .17hmr which is great for rabbits but very pricey. if your budget i
  20. well if Barry J is telling the truth about his 14 year old son then you shouldnt have any problems. just out of interest, what deer are you looking to stalk. you could save on cash and get a .243 for fox and deer if you wanted.
  21. jamie g could you pm me his/her contact details when you get a minute. cheers
  22. does anyone know the cheapest place where i can order a zeiss conquest 6.5-20x50. its to go on a tikka t3 in .243 and with the current exchange rate im looking at about 650 squid which i dont want to have to pay. does anybody know a cheaper place to find one cheers jack
  23. i'd say that if youve come this far with a set-up then try and stick with it for as long as possible because it would all be worth it once you could get it shooting
