ss has summarised it pretty well. if your budget will allow, do just that. atb jack
-
from what youve said the .22lr is more than adequate. if most of your shots are within the 70 range then a .22lr is more than capable. your choice but no need for .17hmr if you wont be stretching past 100 yards
-
SS i agree. i only mention .17 hmr because it suits my needs. my permission is very open, easier for those longer shots and im in no need of a full on cull on the rabbit population.
-
i think it all depends on your budget really. what you might as well do is apply for as many rifles as you need in your first application and if your budget is tight you can get one rifle and then wait until you can afford the next one. i currently hav a .17 hmr which i love and ive been suprised at 2nd and 3rd shots in quick succession resulting in two or three bunnies (sometimes none ) so noise isnt an issue with me. what ive done however is send in a variation for a .243 slot which was of wast of 6o quid (conterminous certificate) when i could have put it all down to begin with. if you hav

im afraid everyone here but you is correct mate. what you'll find is that everyone is happy to help and answer your questions until you insult them or their intelligence. like i previously stated with an example they kill because they can, not because they need to. ive seen it happen and its affected me directly yet your reaction clearly implies it didnt. saying they only kill for food is innacurate and is insulting my intelligence. your also calling me a liar which i dont appreciate either. ill be the first to admit im hugely inexperienced on this site which is why you ask the more experience

very true except they wont just get into a pen for food. we used to keep chickens years ago and had roughly 30 at any one point. then overnight they were all killed. whether or not it was one fox or more we dont know but it/they had killed every chicken and left them without their heads rather than eating them. if they get into a pen it isnt even hunting for them its massacre. they take one or two and kill the rest. with regards to your first post, aaronpigeonplucker i would ring around for someone to take care of your fox problem before it takes care of your chickens because eventually it

from your first post you were clearly out to cause an argument. by saying an absolute statement such as 'theres no need to shoot foxes' you're clearly searching for a fight. if you had simply said, 'could anyone tell me why foxs need to be controlled in the uk you wouldn't have got the responses you got and quite frankly, you deserved. also, hypocrite is exactly the right word for you, you dont shoot anything native but you clearly shoot pigeons. you also call someone anti-ban a redneck and more than likely from your first post you're anti-killing foxes yet you still shoot rabbits, squirrels a

i went for a half hour walkabout in the snow this afternoon to see if i could see any rabbits and enjoy the scenery. anyway 3 shots later i had no rabbits which in my mind when i had pulled the trigger meant three dead rabbits. so i went for a quick zero to see if i was off target and i was so a few adjustments later i started heading home. on the way back saw another rabbit about 70 yards away and tested my zero. looks alright to me however im slightly annoyed at my loss of zero on the scope. lets hope it doesnt happen again. atb jack

i remember it said something along the lines of 'if these were being sold to a licensed restaurant they would have to be prepared by a licensed game dealer' no selling to your local then

mr logic, so they'll be pre Fall of the Berlin wall so pre 1990 (I THINK). does anybody else have any more insight on them. cheers
-
its great fun. ive fired at 600m with a .308 target rifle, no bipod, no scope, just iron sights. great fun and even better when it starts coming together. i was having a look around my permission today to find some spots with some relatively long range shooting. there are some great hills where i can do some target shooting up to about 700m once i get my variation back. best of luck to you mate

considering the entirety of england is at a complete standstill from a change in weather :icon_eek: i thought i would post this. basically they were my grandfathers but he gave them to be. i dont know anything about them only that they are zeiss and very old considering they weigh about 70,000 tonnes. any insight would be great. cheers jack

could have been anything from .243 upwards. any more details on the stag shooting might help get the right calibre. recoil? was it a syndicate? shooting with a friend? pay for a day or weekend. where abouts did you do it? jack

depends if your confident. if you're certain there is no reason why they cant grant your SGC then you may as well buy one and get it bolted now. if however there may be something which could change the licensing departments mind then it might be worth getting one after the inspection just in cases. in that circumstance if you're successful you can just arrange another meeting for him to approve your cabinet. best of luck and ATB

i've got one now. had it since december. its great for me, really accurate. the only problem i've had with it is once or twice when you try to re-range something the screen freezes for a second or two. might just be mine but its not a big deal

best of luck mate

cheers snap. i have to say i love the look of the howa with thumbhole nutmeg stock. looks great and some good reviews as well. ill go to a few dealers and ask them for a few quotes for one.
-
my gun dealer has a tikka t3 lite in stock chambered in .243 winchester for £650. ive also noticed flicking through that the Howa 1500 laminated varmint with thumbhole stock tends to be around £550. given the choice, i am prepared to spend that extra £100 if it is worth it and still have the same for the rest of the set up. i really like the look of the Howa and ive read a few good reviews but if there is a noticeable difference in the Tikka i will be prepared to break the bank a bit more. whats the verdict? cheers, jack
-
Mr Logic thanks for the help. my shooting will depend on circumstance and what i feel, after some experience is the most efficient way. lamping rabbits will almost definitely be done from a car, however foxing will probably be done walkabout so about half and half. i do like the look of the Howa and for that price it looks like a winner. originally i was going to go for a tikka t3 lite but that is going to put me a fair bit over budget with the combination you've suggested. how easy is it to find a Howa 1500? i might go to my dealers this afternoon to ask whether he has any or can stock any.

deker i apologize if my last post was confusing. ill try and put everything into perspective. with regards to thumbhole stocks i have always preferred using them and was enquiring as to whether any factory rifles are chambered in .243 with a thumbhole stock. yes budget is an issue so i wouldn't be having a custom stock made i was hoping somebody may know a factory made rifle with a thumbhole stock. anyway, i have .17 hmr on my FAC and am applying for a variation because my permission has a large fox problem due to a lack of shooters on it. most fox control was carried out by our keepe

on the remington website it says that the sps tactical doesnt come chambered in .243. the sps varmint however does? whats the verdict on that. personally i'd rather spend an extra 200 quid on a scope than on a rifle unless i can tell the difference significantly. do any fatcory rifles come chambered in .243 with a thumbhole stock or would i need a custom stock because i much prefer thumbhole stocks? cheers
-
ive sent off for my variation for a slot for 243. assuming all goes well what sort of optons do i have rifle wise? obviously Tikka, sako, remington, howa perhaps. i was looking more at the Tikka range because they are tend to be comparatively cheap to sako. soemthing with a synthetic stock will probably be best for me. should i go heavy or light barrel? i shall be doing a fair bit of range shooting but it will predominantly be a foxing rifle. as far as moderator goes. t8? jet-z? predator 8? help much appreciated, jack

i think someone is yet to make a sensible post.
-
i actually used to have one of these. great round but it got so great that i began using humans as targets. the licensing department confiscated it unfortunately :clapper: as for a serious answer there is a poll in the FAQ section for the best fox calibre

i went out for a quick 'lamp' this evening for half an hour or so. hundreds and hundreds of rabbits but i could only get the oppurtunity at two which werent lamp shy. shot both at roughly 90 yards. didnt have the rangefinder with me. must remember to bring my camera next time. anyway i was using the cars headlights rather than a lamp which i figured was the reason they were all so spooked. i therefore need a lamp but need a bit of help. scope mounted or hand help? preferably i'd prefer scope mounted as i tend to shoot on my own unless im with the keeper. can anyone recommend a particular
