  1. That should be ok. Just keep it mixed up as best you can! I feed mine whatever I can get hold of. That generally means a lot of rabbit in the winter, and mostly pigeons in the summer, but I've always got my eyes open. When I go beating for local shoots, I'll take anything off their hands that isn't given away, or doesnt go to the game dealer- there's always the odd pheasant that's been shot from about 6 inches away, and is no good to eat! I take squirrels with the airgun whenever I can, pick up fresh road kill- songbirds, game birds, deer, rabbits whatever. Liver is ok for them, just
  2. Hey all, haven't been to this site for a while- been so busy with work and stuff. Sadly, I haven't really had a chance to get out ferretting for a while either. Not since December I don't think! Anyway, had a few hours spare this afternoon, so thought I'd go for a quick mooch- if for no other reason than to give the new truck a quick spin off road! Took my dad with me too, as he had nothing better to do. Went down to the farm in the village where I have permission- dad swears that when he's been out walking the dogs that a particular track is heaving with rabbits. So we had a lo
  3. Well done mate, just make sure you don't take the piss, and do a nice professional job, then the land will come flooding in!
  4. Ditchie, you talk a lot of sense all the time mate.
  5. Anyone else still seeing signs of young ones about? I haven't seen any actual young rabbits for a while, but this morning I caught a pregnant doe! In DECEMBER!
  6. I'm not really sure what record you are setting straight?
  7. Glad to hear it mate, but I have to echo the others on here- slightly irresponsible in the first instance. And also, I get the impression- and find it very concerning- that if someone had replied to your original post with "I have a couple for a fiver each if you want them", you probably wouldn't have gone looking for the lost ones. Still, glad you got them back.
  8. well done- I'm sure there will be people queueing up to let you take ferrets off their hands. Idiot.
  9. Can't beat it. I only managed one yesterday, but it was better than not being out at all!
  10. I always feed mine as usual the day before- but it depends on your routine I suppose. If you usually feed in the morning, then I wouldn't suggest it, but not feeding them if you feed in the evening is more likely to cause a lay up.
  11. If it's just for rats, its not really necessary to spend the earth. I'd recommend something like a BSA Lightning, or an HW95K. Both absolutely superb rifles, for not a great deal of money. I've lost count of the number of rats I've dropped with my HW95 over the 10 years I've had it. It needs some attention now, as some dim wit that I leant it too removed the trigger adjustment screw (i have no idea why!!) and now it's unsafe- it fires if you just look at it!! I also need a new mainspring for it, any suggestions?
  12. I'm a bit more lucky with my local ferret welfare society, as the main man is big on his working, and like most of us on here, it was working that attracted him to ferrets in the first place. Thats not to say he doesn't show his ferrets now, or race them, but his roots lie in our sport!
  13. I can see your point Joe, but the theory behind the it is that many people only buy ferrets because they are so cheap, and so readily availiable. Too many people are willing to let anyone who crosses their palms with a few coins walk away with their kits, and in too many cases, these people have decided on the spur of the moment that they want ferrets.
  14. That's f*****g sickening. I agree with what you say about breeding Compo, it seems that everyone, on these boards as well as elsewhere want to breed every time they have a jill come into season. It's totally unneccessary. Every year, hundreds of unwanted kits are taken in by organisations like the Ferret Welfare Society, and thousands more are probably abandoned, or sold to clueless idiots for £1. Not really that fair is it? It's like breeding from your dogs for profit - just without the profit.
  15. Yorkshire lad, you definitely have to give him a go before you write him off. I've always found that bigger ferrets are more likely to kill underground, but as has already been said, they won't tire as easily, and will shift the hard bunnies that the jills can't manage. As for having him vactionated? Do you mean vascectomised? Ginge, your reply did make sense, not too bad at all mate, just got confused that you talk about your JILLS and then refer to them as HIM and HE!
  16. I keep a record of everything, whether it's ferreting or lamping. So far this year, I've ferreted twice, and lamped twice. 4 - ferreted 5 - lamped 2 - lamped 14 - ferreted Not massive numbers, but it's nice to know what you've done!
  17. Yes COMPO, a longnet would have been completely ideal for that situation. Sadly, I haven't got one! There's one on the shopping list though, as it were! Cheers everyone.
  18. Thanks mate. It's definitely exciting stuff shooting the bolters! Obviously safety has to always come first, but it is good fun if you're careful- even if it's not quite as effective as netting! Let us know how you get on!
  19. That's neither red or rare mate. Looks a nice ferret though!
  20. Got out on that lake I mentioned today, working my ferrets for my mate and his mate to shoot the bolters. I clearly set the rules, and the chaps were safe as houses with their guns Got to work around the lake- netting would've been impossible, as all the holes were under dense gorse and bramble bushes. We got off to a promising start when my hob bolted a rabbit withing a minute. However it just hopped to the next burrow and disappeared. We ended up working a burrow at a time, just shunting the rabbits from one to the next. Ended up with 2 from there. Absolutely no doubt that we
