  1. I've only just bought my first rifle, however everyone recommended the Webley Exocet and BSA Lightning to me, so you may want to look into those. I found them to go for around £170.
  2. I understand where you're coming frmo Sean, I tried to make it clear with the paragraph at the top that this wasn't original research. The contributors list was going to be for people that suggested questions and answers on here to add; in hindsight I'll add the names of those who helped me find this all out in the first place. I started from the top of the list in compiling it and had to post it before it was finished as I went out to purchase the rifle earlier. I was intending the FAQ to mostly cover things that I haven't seen mentioned in the main stickies however I felt that it was nec
  3. Stallion and Gav: Thanks for the welcome! Tracy36: Thanks for the welcome, I'm from a small village just off the A39 between Glastonbury and Bridgwater.
  4. Air Rifle Hunting FAQ Work in Progress Recently I've been doing a lot of research and asking a lot of questions, in an effort to order everything in my mind and to make it easier for other people new to air rifle hunting I've decided to compile an FAQ. This is by no means and exhaustive list, I'm new to the art myself and so I'm simply regurgitating knowledge in an easy to access way. I welcome all questions, comments and criticism. If you have anything you think should be included, please don't hesitate to post it up. Any important questions that don't yet have answers will be p
  5. Thanks for all the information guys; I've taken down the names of the various products and I'll see if the dealer has them in stock.
  6. Thanks for the replies guys. When I was looking at it originally I was thinking of how it would actually behave. I can see them performing quite well in artificial conditions at fairly short range; but as soon as you take them outside they're going to start going ridiculously wide. Less weight, more surface area, they're going to get buffeted a lot. Sure enough, all the reviews say they're fantastic close up, but going incredibly wide at long ranges.
  7. Getting my first rifle tomorrow; wondering kind of cleaning you all suggest. There's a wide range of products available and it would be good to know what I should aim to get. I intend to use NAPIER Power Pellet lubricant on the pellets, not sure if that makes a different, but I thought I'd throw it out there. Would you guys suggest cleaning pellets? Cleaning rods? What kind of oil? How is it best applied? Etc.
  8. I've seen quite a bit on various websites about Prometheus lead-free pellets. But not so much on this site; I'm wondering what everyone's thoughts on them were. Their website claims they fly further and flatter than most other pellets and provide some photographic evidence of their aerodynamic qualities. I couldn't however find a proper independent review. Anyone know much about these? Official Website Expert Opinions - Opinions from several writers from Airgun World and Airgunner magazines. Prometheus Pellets - Their standard ones, for spring air rifles with < 14ft/lbs Dynamic P
  9. We've got Rhode Island Reds out there currently, although we have a mixed lot in the incubator currently. They shouldn't have any problems mixing.
  10. Howdy all. I'm new to both these forums and hunting although I have shot quite a bit before and always had a passion for it. I've lived in the countryside all my life in small villages in Somerset, England. In the last couple of months we moved into a new house with an operational cattery and an acre of land. I'm a traditional geek, a programmer and a Linux advocate; I'm hopefully off to university this September to study Computer Science. I currently work in freelance web design, on the cattery and on our land for my parents. Nice to meet you all.
  11. Ah, I learned the broody information from here. You'd eat them at eight months?
  12. We've just started breeding aylsbury's, khaki campbell's and various chickens (we also have a single Indian runner, she acts as the mother to all the khaki's. The current stock are all for breeding, although we're using incubators for hatching as khaki's and aylsbury's don't get very broody. I'm just wondering what the rule of thumb is for when khaki's are at their best for eating? Is it around the same time as aylsbury's at eight weeks?
  13. Many thanks for the help Sean. I'm thinking of getting Air Arms Diabolo Domed Pellets with the rifle, that a good choice?
  14. Just called the dealer. It's the full power model with a Nikko Sterling 4/32 scope. And the whole bundle is £157.99 and yes, new.
  15. I've had a couple of offers for Lightning's and Exocets and I went and had a look in the local gunshop. What do you guys think of the SMK MOD 19 (£157 with scope)? The scope is good quality and shouldn't suffer any from the shock of firing.
  16. Wanted topic up in the forums: http://www.thehuntinglife.com/forums/index...showtopic=54248
  17. Good place to look for second hand air rifles? It would also still be good to know if it will do the job, I only intend to get this now, get the job done and then learn whatever I can about the rifles, I'll probably take it to bits a couple of times, to whatever extent I can. For that reason I'd prefer my first one to be sub-£100.
  18. I'll start by saying that I'm not completely new to the sport, having shot before with a friends rifles; I've also done a lot of research recently and so feel free to elaborate on any points you make, I can always look up anything I don't understand. I recently moved house and gained quite a bit of land; my parents are using the land for rearing ducks and chickens as well as growing vegetables. Since moving in we've had two ducks killed by crows (tragic, but quite impressive how efficient they are). We also have a huge number of rats living around the vegetable area, mainly under a tarpaul
