I know what you mean about high altitude and thin air,I have suffered mild altitude sickness several times due to not acclimatizing.Your trip sounds fantastic,it will certainly be an eye opener . I will be at the wifes office Xmas party this coming saturday(plenty to eat and a five star hotel thrown in by her company)one of her colleagues has a husband who works as a petrochemical engineer,I am sure he has worked in the region,will see if he has any info on Almaty

I stayed on the Chinese side of the Tien Shan mate en route to the Mongolian side of the Altai.The people on the Xinjiang side are Uigurs,excellent people,and yes,I did stay in native tents when upcountry,they are nomadic people living in round felt,canvas tents called yurts,reminded me of camping in Weardale as a kid Never saw Taigans when I was there,saw big herd guarding mongrels though.Taigans are used for Marmots,hares and fox right?

  5. Been right on the border mate,Urumqi and Xinjiang,get yourself up into the Tien Shan awesome mountains although Almaty is in the foothills of the Alatua range.Try drinking Kumiss . Theres an economic boom there at the moment,oil and gas,maybe thats pushed accommodation prices up as migrant workers flood in?

  7. Those "Badger-type things" are those big orange Marmots I saw in Xinjiang and Mongolia,met a few marmot hunters among the uigurs,and yes,they do eat their dogs.

  9. Got mates around Shiney,penshaw,houghton,hetton etc,made a few phone calls out earlier,keep spreading the word on the grapevine,hope he gets the dogs back

  12. Excellent for sprat,though nowadays I normally use mine for small freshwater fish when live baiting pike or perch,thats the versatility of these nets mate
  13. mackem are they ring necked parakeets? Theres reckoned to be over 7000 ring necked in the area,but we also have a small colony of orange-winged parakeets up the road in weybridge,local twitchers were delighted last year when a peregrine which frequented the area began targetting the birds

  15. Just spoke to the wife,they were £300,well worth it Not your usual blurry green image,but a crisp pin-sharp B&W picture,with an excellent inbuilt IR illuminator Midnight Runner,browns tonight mate,got enough George,zippy,and bungle fillets in the freezer to last a lifetime

  23. Midnight,Maidenhead is closeby,I saw several hundred parrots today,very vocal and very visible elma,theres lots of slow worms locally,havent seen an otter here though I have seen them in sutherland and caithness
