Thanks for that. Yeah I realize its a heavy rifle, but I think that's the way to go. I bought the 57 several years ago but now I find it a bit light and I can't hold it as steadily as I used to. I wouldn't bother with a silencer myself so I am still unsure. If I see one second hand for the right price I will probably get it whatever length it is. Anyone else willing to advise?
-
That's good to know stealthy, so as long as I hold the lever while loading I will be ok. Anybody going to comment on the barrel length question? I only want to know which balances better, full length or carbine?
-
At least a tin, you should get good groups after a tin though.

Hi all, I am thinking of buying a HW77 to replace my HW57. I bought the 57 a few years ago but it feels a bit light now. Anyway I might buy a 77 but I have heard they can crush your thumb in the breech! Is this true? or is this just with faulty guns or handling. Also what barrel length would you advise. I want the one that balances better and cocks easily.

Because if you were going to go to the trouble of getting a custom stock made you would likely get it tuned too. Its probably a one off stock suggesting the owner sent it to a tuner for the full works.

bsa r10 or rapid 7 mk1 , what gun would you choose ?
Edgar replied to timc20xe's topic in General Airgun Discussion
Neither to be honest. I would get a good quality springer if I had that kind of money and a good scope and mounts and have money left over for a tin of pellets or 2. But I am a penny pinching Scot. From what I have heard go for the rapid. -
Looks like a super star that has been tuned and re-stocked.

I shoot a fair few rats. I trap more though. With 3 mk4 fens I can usually get 2 and sometimes 3 rats every setting. If you do use traps remember they must be covered and checked every day. Any rifle will do as you don't need a lot of power as long as it groups under an inch at 25 yards it will do but short rifles are easiest in sheds.

I see your point, but the legislation doesn't always make sense. I think if lead is banned for deer stalkers and restricted for shotgun users then air rifle pellets could be the next thing to go. Where would this leave us?
-
Don't know if anybody read shooting times this week but there was an article about the possibility of deer stalkers being forced to use lead free ammunition in the future. Something to do with tiny lead particles ending up in the carcass. If this happens then I can see lead ammunition being totally banned. This may not sound logical but this doesn't mean it couldn't happen! How would A lead ammo ban affect air gunners? I have no use for steel/plastic pellets myself, does anybody think they are any good? What about copper ammunition? Is there any currently available, or other metals? Or would l

Im not convinced that silencers are neccesary for effective hunting, reason being if you shoot one animal then the one beside it is more likely to be scared of by the noise of the pellet hitting the first one. That noise is closer so as air rifles are fairly quiet anyway I can't see it matters too much. Rabbits for example have such good hearing that I suspect the noise of a silenced air rifle is still very audible to them. As for your new rifle it may well improve for bedding in, give it a couple of tins.

Interesting pics. I find that on an average adult rabbit the pellet goes in one side and out the other out to 15-20 yards, after that it can usually be found just under the skin on the other side of the head from where it entered out to my maximum range, 30-35yards, this is with a medium weight .22 pellet.

You don't have to get the kit straight away, you can always buy one later.

Good rifle. One thing to watch with 80s, they can easily creep over the limit so get it cronographed every so often, especially if you or anyone does any work on its internals. By the way I would get a V-mach kit for it. HW's often benefit from a simple tune.
-
Try all the decent pellets you can get and find out what works best. RWS, Accupell, AA field, H and N, JSB Exact, Bisley are all a good starting point.
-
Most air rifles are set to about 11 ftlb. This is so they do not go over the limit with different pellets. Accuracy is far more important. You are better with a smooth, accurate rifle with little recoil running at say 10ftlb than a jumpy, inaccurate rifle doing 11.8 ftlb.

Seeing as this thread has already got somewhat side tracked I wonder if anybody knows, does the HW57 come in two barrel lengths? There was only one on offer where I bought mine. Various people have said HW57K, mine only says HW57 near the loading gate. So is there 2 barrel lengths i.e standard and carbine or do people just assume the HW57 must have a K after it because the barrel is short anyway?

If its a springer you want the mounts for get one piece mounts preferably with a stop pin or arrestor block. Sport smatch have always worked well for me.

I would say you would be better off with a Weihrauch, but then I would, I use one all the time. I think it's better than my mates BSA super sport and the Webley I used to have. But different guns suit different people. See if you can try one in a gun shop and compare it to other models there and decide what suits you best. that said Weihrauch's are very good!

What's everyone think about a Cometa 300
Edgar replied to apperknowle's topic in Rifle Reviews, Technical Help and Tips
If you like it get it. -
Look people must be getting fed up hearing this from me but if you want a good reliable accurate springer for 200 quid or less get a Weihrauch, new or second hand. IN my opinion nothing else comes close to them for the money.
-
That's actually fine mate. You are just getting used to the gun, your groupings will improve a bit with practice and the rifle bedding in. I have the same gun. On a good day I can get inch groups out to 35 yards. If its not a good day I keep to 30 yards. Inch groups at whatever range you can get them to are accurate enough for hunting as long as you stick to that range.

100 yard rabbit shot with 12ft/lbs.
Edgar replied to LordGamebore's topic in General Airgun Discussion
I'm not either. If it's with a 12ft/lb air gun it's a daft thing to do anyway. -
Not always. The HW 57 AND 99 are fairly light weight. As is the HW50.
-
If you do strip it be carefull its not over the limit when you put it back together. HW80s were meant to run at 18-20 ft/lb and can creep up easily.
