  1. Hi Bri, All you can really say about the Winchesters is that they are cheap and transfer their energy well into the target. They're not the most consitent load as you mention though. You still get the occasional pop as one goes supersonic and 100 yard groups are hardly tight. I still use Winnies though as they're 30% cheaper than the more consitent Eleys and I've still had reasonable practical accuracy from them in the field. Out to about 75 yards they're good enough for consistent head shots on rabbits. Hope this helps you in some way, Cheers Steve
  2. Thanks for all the replies chaps, I guess the only sure way to find out is to buy a couple of boxes of Eleys and do some testing. I'll keep you posted. Cheers again Steve
  3. I spent most of yesterday convincing myself that Winchester subs are far to erratic to consistently headshot rabbits. The general consensus from most was that, although significantly more expensive, Eleys are the way forwards. I still had 750 Winnies left in the safe, wanted shot of them so to speak, so headed out on the golf course I look after for the second night in a row. Usually I give it at least two days before walking the same spot, not sure why really, just thought they might be jumpy on a consecutive night. How wrong I was. With a 5-10 mph breeze the noise of me trudging arou
  4. Hi guys, Just to clarify. Bought the rifle from new about 4 months ago. Have only tried Winnies and I clean the bolt and rifle (excluding the bore) religiously after every session, sometimes twice a day. Bought the Brookes trigger kit and have fitted the red tube and the second lightest spring, really impressed for under £9 delivered although i still have a tiny bit of creep. I always make sure the mod is tight, although I haven't tried shooting it without the mod, might give that a go at some point. From what you guys have said, it sounds to me like the ammo isn't the best.
  5. Hi there, I carefully drag a boresnake through it every 500 rounds or so. To be honest i think i read somewhere that you shouldn't clean a 22lr barrel too often, something to do with lubricant. I'm not sure what the score is really, my gun shop said to only bother when it starts missing, which would imply every five rounds!! I clean the SAK about the same amount.
  6. Blimey, that's quite a difference. Makes me wonder how ethical it is to use Winchesters when I now know there's a very good chance 20% may not hit the intended mark. Have you noticed any bad points to the Eleys? Cleanliness or noise for example? What to do with 750 Winnies? Kill some more paper methinks. Cheers
  7. Hello Wise Ones, I own a CZ 452 22lr. Last night I missed a 60 yard bunny while on a bi-pod with virtually zero wind. It was annoying but also a bit surprising as I didn't feel myself snatch the shot. All the others I aimed at fell clean. Having stewed on it all night, I got up early doors this morning and rattled a few rounds into some paper for the first time in ages. Again there was virtually no wind. As you can see, four out of the five shots on two of the groups seem to relate to where I was aiming, but there always seems to be the odd stray one. It felt like all 15 shots wer
  8. Nice contrast to the really red face
  9. Here's my little CZ American in 22LR. It has a cheap but effective Hawke Nite-Eye 3.5-10x50 scope, Harris 9-13" swivel, SAK mod and Allen sling. It also benifits from a Brooke's trigger kit.
  10. Hi Deker, I went for the second lightest spring and the thickest tube, red I think, can't remember, but it was defo the thickest. It stills has a little creep, but it's far better than stock. The spring seems safe too. Went through the whole smacking the gun with a rubber mallet shenanigans and it held true. Over 2000 rounds later and not one nasty incident. I was thinking about wrapping a little tin foil around the tube to eradicate all creep. It's more than good enough for 1/2" groups at 50yds though, and as I only use it for rabbits not paper, I have left it in it's apparently
  11. Hey Richie, Like jamie g said, whack it in some Cola for 20 mins, I'm too scared to put mine in Cillit Bang, it's ally. Then go at it with an old 12G copper brush, I find it works a treat. I only clean mine about every 2000 rounds and it always comes up like new. Cheers, Steve
  12. Found this report. A hunter who shot a leading wildlife expert after mistaking his night-vision binoculars for a fox's eyes was cleared of assault on 27/8/04. Anthony Burns (52) from Prestwood, Buckinghamshire, was out "lamping" for foxes late one night last year when he shot and seriously injured journalist Trevor Lawson. Aylesbury crown court heard Lawson had been looking for barn owls along a footpath through farmland when he was shot in the chest with a hunting bullet designed to disintegrate inside the body of an animal to kill it more effectively. The court heard Mr Lawson spent two
  13. Banshee, BBs measure 4.1mm and AAAs measure 5.2mm, the mighty SG measure a whopping 8.4mm and you only get 9 in a cartridge as opposed to 38 for the AAA. Cheers Steve
  14. Very occasionally I blow the dust of my trusty air rifle and pluck a few pigeons out of the trees in my paddock. I try not to break cover too often, as such some lay around on the floor for half an hour or so. A few weeks ago one of the pair of breeding Sparrow Hawks we have nesting at the bottom of the paddock swooped down and started tucking into one of the woodies. I watched it at 25-30 yards through the scope for ages. Then either I or something spooked it and it took off with the pigeon. I couldn't beleive it could carry it such a relatively large bird, amazing! I have also seen a fe
  15. Hi there. I ordered one off Eric's website two weeks ago using paypal and it arrived within 5 days. At £8 delivered I was willing to take the chance of it not turning up. Fitted, it has improved my already very useful little American. Pretty good value for money I think. Cheers Steve
